Pride and Prejudice the Poor Princess
Chapter 57
Mrs. Reynolds looked at him lovingly as Darcy stood in front of the large pier-glass arranging his cuff-links.
"Is this okay?" He turned sideways, looking at himself and asking uncertainly.
"Very handsome, Mr. Darcy. This silver-gray suit perfectly sets off your tall figure and noble temperament." Mrs. Reynolds said in an aria.
Darcy smoothed out the wrinkles on the hem of his clothes, turned around in front of the mirror a few times before striding away.Mrs. Reynolds shook her head amusedly. Just as she was about to clean up the leftover clothes scattered on the sofa, he walked in quickly again.
"Forgot something?" Mrs. Reynolds straightened up.
"Yes." Darcy took out a black scarf with gold silk moire pattern from the interlayer of the drawer, folded it into a unique shape and put it in the pocket of the jacket, deliberately revealing a small sharp corner.
"Oh, I finally saw it. It turns out that you are hiding here." Mrs. Reynolds stared at the scarf and asked incredulously, "Is this really the one from last time? Didn't you just buy it?"
"It's true. I'm leaving, wish me luck." He nodded slightly and hurried away again.
"May God bless you. If you can marry Miss Mary back, I dare say you must be the happiest man in England." Mrs. Reynolds chased out of the room and shouted.
When Darcy arrived at the hotel in Langton, Elizabeth was standing in the lobby, asking the waiter to bring them a pot of black tea in the back garden.
"Where is Mary, Miss Elizabeth?" Darcy asked gently and politely, taking off his hat.
"She's in the back garden of the hotel." Elizabeth pointed to the floor-to-ceiling windows. Mary was sitting around the small round table with Mr. and Mrs. Gardner chatting, with a charming smile on her face.
Darcy stared at her intently until the waiter came over and asked if he wanted to hang his hat.He handed the hat to the other party, looked at Elizabeth and asked, "Miss Elizabeth, can I be alone with Mary for a moment? I have something very important to say to her." His hands behind his back clenched into fists.
Elizabeth looked at his particularly grand attire and raised her eyebrows.
"Can I ask what it is?" She had already guessed it, but she still wanted to tease him deliberately.
Darcy pursed his lips uncomfortably, and said in a low voice, "I think you will know after I leave."
"Wow!" Elizabeth sighed meaninglessly, and nodded with a smile, "Then please wait a moment, I will call my uncle and aunt." After saying something, the three said goodbye to Mary and walked towards the lobby.
Darcy bowed to them through the French windows.
"Good luck, Mr. Darcy." Mr. and Mrs. Gardner stepped forward to hug him. After getting along with each other these days, they have recognized this easy-going, generous and knowledgeable gentleman.
"Good luck!" Elizabeth said sincerely.
"Thank you." Darcy bowed again, watched the three leave before walking towards Mary who was looking up.She was sitting under the green grape arbor, the sunlight cut by the vines fell on her like raindrops, and the white grape flowers and fine dust were flying around her. The picture was so beautiful, like an illusory dream.
Darcy's footsteps stopped, he blocked the sun with his hands, stared at her, and walked towards her slowly until his frantic heartbeat calmed down a little.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Darcy. They want to go for a walk, so I can only entertain you." Mary stood up, lifted her skirt to salute him, and a few grape blossoms rolled down from her golden hair.
"Good afternoon, Miss Mary." Darcy bowed deeply, and then sat down at Mary's invitation.
The waiter brought a pot of black tea and added some cream cakes.
"Although the black tea and three meals here are very ordinary, the cream cake is delicious. Do you want to try it?" Mary pinched a small cake and put it into her mouth, gently licking off the cream stained on the corners of her lips with the tip of her pink tongue , squinting and making an expression of enjoyment.
Darcy turned his head quickly and said in a hoarse voice, "Thank you, I don't like sweets very much."
He picked up the teacup, hiding the desire in his eyes.
"That's such a pity. It's a pity the kitchen here can't be used by guests, otherwise I could make you some savory pastries. I think you will like it."
"As long as you do it, I like it." Darcy said in a sincere tone.
Mary's ears were a little hot, she smiled at Darcy, and then drank tea in silence.
The two hadn't spoken for a long time, and Darcy would turn his head to look at her every few minutes, as if he wanted to say something.
Mary gradually felt that something was wrong, and her heart beat faster.
Darcy is still brewing, he has already drank his fourth cup of black tea.
"Waiter, please bring us another pot of black tea!" Mary beckoned to the servant.
The servant quickly brought the black tea, Mary gave him a penny as a tip, and then filled the teacup in front of Darcy.
"Miss Mary, I've been thinking about it for a long time..." Darcy's eyes fixed on her pale fingertips, and he spoke slowly.
At this moment, the servant of the hotel came over with a letter and interrupted his remaining words.
"Your letter, Miss Mary. It is indicated as urgent, so I take the liberty to interrupt you." The servant bowed politely.
A look of chagrin appeared on Darcy's face. You know, for today's marriage proposal, he read all the romance novels in the library, and even dreamed it was the scene of his marriage proposal. But it doesn't matter, taking advantage of Mary's reading the letter for a few minutes, he can reconsider the dissatisfaction.
Thinking of this, he relaxed and took a sip from his teacup.
Mary quickly opened the envelope and read ten lines at a glance. Her expression changed from relaxed to dignified, then to angry, and finally turned expressionless again, but the slightly trembling fingertips revealed her inner unrest. She didn't expect such a scandal to happen to the Bennett family. No matter in Great Xia or England, this incident is enough to shame the whole family!
"What's the matter with you, Miss Mary?" Darcy put down his teacup and asked in a deep voice.
Mary's eyes were still fixed on the letter paper, and she didn't respond, until Darcy's warm palm grasped her cold fingertips, she came back to her senses, and smiled at him as if nothing had happened.
Darcy knew her all too well.He is studying her every move every day.He saw pain and fragility in her blue eyes.He leaned forward, stared straight into her eyes, and said cautiously, "Look at me, Miss Mary. I am Darcy, a person you can trust and rely on when you are helpless. Please tell me what happened What is it? I have told you my most painful and secret past, and you can do the same. I swear I will never publicize it."
His earnest and forceful voice gave Mary strength. She handed over the letter and said in a calm tone, "Unfortunately, Lydia and Wickham eloped."
In the UK, young people under the age of 21 must obtain parental consent if they want to get married. If the parents object, their marriage is void.Lydia chose to elope without saying a word, without even asking the Bennetts for their opinions. Even Catherine, who was inseparable from her all day long, didn't know when she and Wickham fell in love. This incident was like a bomb that exploded without warning, which caught people off guard.Mrs. Bennet would absolutely agree to her union with the handsome and charming Wickham, if she could have communicated with Mrs. Bennet beforehand. No matter how you look at it, she has no reason to elope.
Mary sensed a deep malice in it.Lydia left a letter saying they were going to be married in Gretna Green, but Mary was sure they would never be in any of the churches there.Wickham had no intention of marrying her at all, he was taking revenge on himself! He once said that he would make her regret it, and this sentence now appeared in her mind very clearly.
Mary lowered her head to hide her sullen expression.
At the same time, Darcy put down the letter and said in a hoarse voice, "It's my fault. If I had told you the truth earlier, Lydia would not have been bewitched by him."
"No, it was my negligence, and it has nothing to do with you." Mary lowered her head, unable to see her expression clearly. Her voice had completely lost its usual melodiousness, and was as hoarse as cardboard scraping across a table.
Darcy's face became gloomy, and he pulled out his chair and walked in front of her. After standing for a few minutes, he suddenly knelt down on one knee, firmly grasped Mary's hands on his knees, and said emphatically, "I will definitely find them and let this matter end as quickly as possible. Please don't worry too much , quietly waiting for my news. It is my honor to serve you, may God bless you."
After he finished speaking, he placed a reverent kiss on the back of Mary's white and smooth hand, and then left in a hurry. He even forgot his hat, and the servants of the hotel chased it out and brought it to him.
Mary's sullen expression disappeared, and she stared blankly at the back of her hand, as if a flower had bloomed on it.After a few minutes, she jumped up as if she was on fire, wiped it with a handkerchief, and her cheeks were unconsciously stained with two blushes.
Elizabeth and Gardner were found by the servants sent by Darcy. When they arrived at the hotel, Mary had packed up and saluted.
"Look at this letter, we will leave immediately after reading it." Mary slapped the letter on the table.
"Oh, my God! Why is this happening?" Aunt Gardner almost fainted.
"They are going to London instead of Gretna Green. It seems that they don't plan to get married. The problem is serious, and we have to find them as soon as possible!" Uncle Gardner immediately grasped the point.
"Damn Wickham! We should have exposed his true colors long ago!" Elizabeth kneaded the letter paper to vent her anger, and after a while, she unfolded it in a panic, and read it again, for fear of missing any clues.
"The luggage is packed, let's go. I have asked the waiter to rent a carriage for us. Although the cost is expensive, now is not the time to worry about it." Mary said vigorously.
Only then did the other three come to their senses, grabbed their luggage and hurried downstairs. The carriage of the hotel was returned by the servant sent by Darcy, and the carriage of the Darcy family was already waiting at the door. The coachman saw Mary and saluted her respectfully.
There was a rush of heat in Mary's heart, and she boarded the carriage without hesitation.Elizabeth kept thanking Darcy for his generosity. If anyone said that Darcy was ruthless, she would use the sharpest words to fight back until he begged for mercy.
"Is this okay?" He turned sideways, looking at himself and asking uncertainly.
