Tanmei Fairy Tales

Chapter 52. The Ugly Duckling

With his white and bony fingers, he pushed the red cherry and stuffed it into the same cherry red lips.I watched the rosy sap flow out from between his white teeth, and the field of cherries planted in my heart, which had been barren for a long time, seemed to be watered and ripe.

Such beautiful hands, of course, cannot be entrusted with rough farm work.

"Come with me," I tried to squeeze out a harmless smile, "I thought of the job that suits you best."

This is my private library. It is located on the basement floor. It is warm in winter and cool in summer. Even if there is no fireplace, it will not feel cold in this season.Oh, I certainly can't take the risk of starting a coal fire here, and letting the tongues of fire, careless and inadvertent, devour these precious collections of mine.

In fact, the books here are all collected by me at great expense from booksellers all over the world. Most of them are expensive and beautifully printed, and many of them are antiques from the first printing.

In the past, whenever business friends came to my manor as guests, I would bring them here, enjoy their admiration when they looked around the rows of bookshelves, and then ask me: "De Fury, do you read all these books?" Have you ever been? It’s amazing, you are really a learned person!” This may be a kind of vanity at work. But I don't drink, and I don't like to play with women with different bed partners. I don't think this "elegant vanity" really counts as "big villainy"-oh, for God's sake.

To be honest, I have only read a small part of them. I am so busy running the kirsch business and attending various social gatherings that I rarely have time to sit down and enjoy the pleasure of reading in peace. But now I want to give this kind of fun to this lovely boy.

"Look, Shelley, do you like it here?"

The eyes of Shelleys looking around in surprise reminded me of Alice who fell into the rabbit hole in the fairy tale world.I know he likes it, just as I expected.

For the first time, he smiled at me with a little defenseless smile, and nodded vigorously to me.

This is the perfect job for him: "Okay Shelleys, then please be my librarian in the future and help me organize these books." For him, what could be a better workplace for him than a room full of "knowledge" waiting to be absorbed by him?

"Hmm!" Shelles actually squeezed out a syllable from his throat.Although it is just a simple single note, it is undoubtedly a kind of encouragement for me and a reward for my kindness.

He walked to those bookshelves expectantly and looked around, brushing his fingertips over the thick covers that had been wiped spotlessly—yes, even though I seldom visited, these books were regularly cleaned and cared for. Then he turned his head and cast me a puzzled look.

I thought I heard him say: But Mr. Duffery, what can I do for you?

I thought for a while and said, "Just ask you to rearrange them in alphabetical order, no problem?"

But Shelley's eyes were even more bewildered, and there was obviously a question mark that hadn't disappeared.

I laughed: "Oh, that's right. Originally, these books were arranged according to the date of publication, but I don't think it's good. It's not convenient to find them. So, please!"

Shelleys made a suddenly realized expression, and the doubts in his eyes were finally relieved.
