[Twilight] Vampire's Royal Engagement
Chapter 9 The Uninvited Guest
"Hi, Uncle Evan." Bernice dialed the phone and pretended to be relaxed, "Where are you?"
"Of course it was at your dad's funeral, honey." Evan knew that Bernice hadn't shown up: "To be honest, I didn't even know about your dad's terminal illness. He kept it too good to be true, that old bastard .”
"Lero wants me to go..." Bernice knew she was supposed to be there, no matter how much she and Martin had animosity. But she also knew that it was impossible for her to pass. After 2 hours, the sun would not retreat from the earth at all, and she could not appear in the sun.Imagine what a good episode it would have been if the dead man's daughter had spontaneously combusted at a funeral.
"Bernice, you will make the right choice. No one can force you." Of course Evan knew that Bernice should appear, but he was never willing to make decisions for the children, and he respected the children's own choices.Evan's tenderness once again provoked Bernice's tears.
"I'm sorry, Evan." Bernice actually cried. She was doomed to let Evan down, which was worse than missing Martin's funeral.
Bernice dropped the phone and buried herself among her dolls, trembling.

"We're leaving after sundown," Bernice said quietly to Bob.How dare Bob ask for an excuse from Bernice like this, he had no choice but to suppress his uneasiness as much as possible, and waited for the farewell after the sun set.
Bernice was hungry again.
She had to do something to ignore the pull of Bob's blood.Of course she knew what she wanted, but she couldn't continue to lengthen her death list, at least she thought so when she was still awake. Her old favorites, honey lobster and green salad, came to her mind and made her feel sick. But she couldn't just give up trying.
The kitchen was still empty, the bags of fried chicken legs and soda crackers that Bob had eaten were thrown in the trash can.Bernice picked up an opened bar of bonbons and stuffed it into her mouth——
"Ouch—" Bernice spat out the whole chocolate, she could even feel the roughness of the chocolate sliding in her stomach, as if she had just swallowed many grains of sand.
Bernice turned on the faucet in the kitchen and washed her face and hands. For a moment she wanted to reach for her cleanser and body lotion, but she watched the water rush over her white arms as if it had just flowed. It was like a glass plate, not penetrated at all, and she thought she understood something.
Bernice poured out half a glass of red wine and drank it down, surprised that she didn't spit it all out.So she had another drink.
Bernice suddenly saw the shriveled onion lying quietly under the dim light by the window. She suddenly knew where this unexpected "thing" came from. When she and Joy became king and queen of the homecoming dance in the fall, the two of them celebrated here, before it was Bernice's place.Joey promises to make her pasta, only to end up with the two of them just throwing the ingredients all over the place.
This is a survivor.Bernice looked at the motionless onion, looking so innocent in the dim light, as if it didn't remind Bernice what is called "things are different".
"Bob." Bernice said calmly, "Can you throw it away for me?" Bernice pointed to the innocent onion.
Bob took it from the light to the dark trash can, and Bernice put the lid on the trash can.

"Ms. Lai Ruo Smith, Bernice Smith's mother?" The thin Lai Ruo looked at the two men in neat uniforms and guns outside the door in amazement: "We are the Houston police." The two took Show her your ID: "Can we go in?"
"Of course—please come in." Lai Ruo suddenly had a bad feeling, she stayed behind, closed the door slowly, and walked into the reception room after 3 seconds.
"Ms. Smith, we want to ask you some questions about your daughter Bernice." The gray-haired policeman kept looking at Leroy with his small black eyes, which made her feel uncomfortable.
"What's wrong with Bernice? Could it be that she..." Lai Ruo was taken aback by herself.
"No, no, no, Ms. Smith." The other man looked more business-like, and Lei Ruo heard him introduce himself as Williams, and his decent appearance made Lei Ruo feel more at ease: "We are not talking about Miss Smith. What misfortune happened."
"What's that?" Lai Ruo looked at the two men in turn.
"Well, Ms. Smith," said Williams. "As you may know, two students from your daughter's school recently went missing on campus."
"I don't understand what this has to do with my daughter." Lei Ruo said in a bad tone.
"One of the missing boys is Joey Parker, who, as you may know, has always been very close to your daughter. The other missing girl, Dorothy White, we have information that she Had a close relationship with Joey Parker for a few days..."
"Joy Parker? Of course I know him, his parents are very close to us, Bernice has been friends with him since she was a child... God, Anna must be so sad... She didn't tell me, probably Because our family is also a mess..." Lai Ruo absolutely empathized with the pain of losing a loved one.
"Your daughter stopped showing up at the school at the same time, Ms. Smith." The gray-haired old John was unmoved: "Ms. Wells from the Student Affairs Department told us that you asked her to leave."
"Her father passed away, of course she has to ask for leave." Lei Ruo said angrily.
"May we see Miss Smith?" said old John slyly. "You know, ask a few questions, and we're sure Miss Smith would like to do a little favor in finding her friend, Mr. Parker, sooner." He looked A glance at the stairs outside the living room.Of course, there was no one there.
"She's not here." Lai Ruo said bluntly.
"We thought Miss Smith had asked for leave for her father's funeral..." Old John's words were self-evident.
"We have been to Miss Smith's residence, and she is not there." Williams took the conversation: "We want to know where Miss Smith is?"
"She is very sad." Lai Ruo is not a fool: "This is not a good time for her to meet guests."
"Why can't you just tell us where Miss Smith is?" Old John's tone became more and more like he was interrogating a prisoner: "Or, Ms. Smith, you don't know where Miss Smith is at all?"
"...she saw Martin put his arms around a woman younger than her, calling her 'baby'... that's all he used to call Bernice, and he didn't even call me 'darling', not 'Baby'...I know she hates me for being weak, I don't have the courage to leave Martin...she doesn't want to come back, I don't blame her...can't you just leave her alone..." Lai Ruobian said crying.
Williams felt embarrassed, and old John was impatient: "We are sorry, ma'am." He said insincerely: "But we really need to see Miss Smith."
"Then go find her." Of course she would not believe that her daughter would be involved in something bad, but their suspicion made her feel offended by both herself and her daughter.
"If you can't find my daughter, I believe Director Strong will definitely agree to send more elites to find Bernice. After all, he likes little Bernice so much." Lai Ruo's pride is beyond doubt : "I will see Director Strong at tomorrow's memorial service, and I will ask him personally."
"Thank you for visiting, two gentlemen." Lai Ruo started to chase people away: "Do you want to stay for a cup of tea?"
