Chapter 2 First Encounter with Da Gama

A few years passed, and after grandma passed away, only Jie and Ryan were left living in this log cabin.Jie went to work in the shipbuilding factory by the sea very early. Although he was young, he was considered a veteran in the shipbuilding industry. The matter of going to sea back then, both of them agreed and never mentioned it again. Ryan actually wanted to ask Jie, but he didn't want Jie to leave, so he had to pretend that he had forgotten about it.

"Ryan, I'm back."

"Jie, I want to discuss something with you. I will graduate in a month. I want to go to shipbuilding like you. Can you take me to visit your place tomorrow, and discuss with your boss to let me go? work there."

Jie frowned and said, "Ryan, we work very hard there, besides, didn't you say you wanted to be a teacher?"

"Yes, but I want to do the same job as you."

"I can take you to see it tomorrow, but I still hope you can think about it carefully."

"Okay!" Ryan said happily.

Early the next morning, Ryan and Jay went to Jay's work place together.

"Yo, Jay, is this your brother?"

"Yes, I'm graduating in one month. If I want to work here, I'll take him here first."

"Well, Jay's younger brother must be capable too."

While walking, Jie introduced the boat building process, precautions and some interesting stories of fishermen to Ryan.Suddenly, a voice came from behind: "You know a lot about shipbuilding."

Jie and Ryan turned their heads and saw a luxuriously dressed young man looking at them with a smile. Although he was smiling, there was also a bit of seriousness in it. In short, he was not from the same world as them.

The young man took a few steps forward, stretched out his hand first, and introduced himself, "Hello, I'm Da Gama."

Jay held the outstretched hand suspiciously and said, "Hi, I'm Jay Brown, and this is my brother, Ryan Brown. Nice to meet you."

"I have always been committed to the cause of sailing. I hope that one day I can open up a new path and make contributions to our great motherland. Our team needs someone who knows about shipbuilding and use of ships like you to complete the great cause of sailing. Are you interested? Join?"

Before Jie could respond, Da Gama continued, "Of course, if you are willing to join us, I can send you to Evora to study mathematics, astronomy and navigation. I sincerely hope you can join."

Ryan looked at Jie and felt his hesitation, which was a kind of hesitation with apprehension in expectations. He heard Jie say, "No, thank you for your kindness, but I'm just a carpenter."

Da Gama seemed to see Jie's hesitation, he didn't insist on it, just said: "I will be here for a few days, if you change your mind, you can come to me at any time."

"Okay, goodbye then."

"Goodbye."

After speaking, Jie pulled Ryan away, and they didn't speak any more along the way. Jie was expressionless, wondering what he was thinking, and Ryan didn't dare to say anything, for fear of disturbing him. After a while, Ryan asked cautiously: "Jie, do you want to go?"

Jie said in a low voice: "No, I just remembered that when I was young, you asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I said I would go sailing, but now, I'm used to such a peaceful life, if he didn't mention it today , maybe I will never have such an idea in my life.”

"So you still want to go, right?" Ryan said with a hint of tension in his voice.

"I don't want to lie to you, I really want to go, this is my dream all the time, but I also don't want to leave you, so I rejected him."

Ryan thought for a while and said: "Jie, you go, I don't want you to have any regrets in your life, I will wait for you here."

Jie walked forward and hugged Ryan, and said softly: "No, you don't know, you are more important than everything to me."

Ryan wrapped his arms around Jay's shoulders with an unspoken attachment.
