[Pride and Prejudice] Liz's Little Vest
Chapter 81 Elizabeth & Darcy
three days later.
Elizabeth received an invitation from Miss Bingley, saying that she would be invited to Netherfield Manor in the evening to discuss the preparations for the wedding of Jane and her brother.
Such a request was understandable, and Elizabeth went forward without any doubts.
She felt very boring these three days, because Mr. Darcy said that he needed to go to London to deal with the follow-up matters of the national debt, and it might take a week to come back.
So this kind of invitation was right in her arms. She was going to ask Mr. Bingley in passing about Mr. Darcy's movements.
The orange sun hangs at the end of the road, slowly dipping into the pure sky.The paint spilled from the gaps in the white clouds, staining the leaves of the maple trees red.
Elizabeth set out early on the three-mile journey from Ben's House to Netherfield. She walked along the direction of the setting sun, couldn't help being fascinated by the scenery, and slowed down her pace.
Even so, she arrived at the manor half an hour earlier than planned.
Elizabeth hesitated for a while, but still knocked on the door of Netherfield Manor. She was surprised to find that Miss Bingley, whom she had not seen for three days, was greeting her.
The servants were in a hurry, as if they were preparing something important, and they all disappeared in a short while.
Miss Bingley's complexion didn't look very good, and the smile on her face was a bit forced, but she was obviously hiding it very deliberately, and didn't want Elizabeth to find out.
"Miss Elizabeth, the weather is really nice today." She greeted with a smile.
"Indeed." Elizabeth replied. She was amazed at Miss Bingley's politeness.
"I seem to hear some voices from the garden in the backyard. Is Mr. Bingley over there? Shall we go and have a look together?" This was the first time Elizabeth and Miss Bingley lived together peacefully, and she still felt a little Weird, trying to keep finding topics.
"Backyard? Miss Elizabeth, you must have heard wrong. Absolutely nothing."
A note came from the servant. Miss Bingley looked at it cautiously, and then she looked a little unhappy.
"What happened?" Elizabeth asked.
"No, no. All very well."
"Then Jane's wedding—"
"Ah yes, Miss Jane and my brother's wedding—" Miss Bingley prolonged her voice, as if she was thinking about something.
Elizabeth finally noticed something was wrong.
Obviously, it was Miss Bingley who wrote solemnly, wanting to discuss with her about Jane's wedding. But now it seems that she doesn't care about this topic at all.Miss Bingley looked around absently.
"Is Mr. Bingley here? To be honest, I think such a matter should be discussed with Mr. Bingley and my sister. If you are free, Miss Bingley, I can ask the servant to call Jane over now." .”
"Oh no—no, he's not here—he's busy."
Miss Bingley evidently realized her poor excuse, and fell silent.
They sat by the window and watched the sunset slowly sink.
"The sunset is so beautiful." Elizabeth sighed.
"Indeed," said Miss Bingley absently and perfunctorily.
But soon the second note sent by the servant solved her predicament.
Miss Bingley breathed a sigh of relief: "Miss Elizabeth, I suddenly feel like going for a walk in the garden, do you want to accompany me?"
Elizabeth politely agreed. Then she saw Miss Bingley hold up a candle and make a gesture of invitation.
They followed the candle through the gradually darkening Netherfield Manor.
"Will it be too dark in the manor, Miss Bingley?" Elizabeth asked, "Will the servant be accidentally injured when doing things?"
"Oh, nothing, nothing," said Miss Bingley falteringly. "The housekeeper's wife will light the candles in a moment. Light every room."
Miss Bingley is very strange today.Elizabeth secretly thought.
But after all, she was not familiar with her, so she didn't say much.
By the time they reached the garden gate in the backyard, the last ray of sunlight disappeared into the sky.In the vast fields, there is a feeling of complete silence.
Just as Elizabeth was about to sigh, she suddenly realized that Miss Bingley had blown out the candle at some point and disappeared.
"Miss Bingley?" she whispered.
No one answered.
Elizabeth sighed, she didn't know what she was doing.
Before she had time to think about it, she saw a glimmer of light not far ahead, while the Netherfield Manor behind her was still plunged into darkness.
Elizabeth did not hesitate, and quickly walked towards the light source.
The light source gradually flickered, and it turned out to be a row of candles.
A candle was placed every three feet from end to end in a row of very pretty rosettes.Like a shining star in the dark, Elizabeth's heartbeat slowed down for a moment.
She stopped involuntarily.
Looking forward along the candle, the end is almost surrounded by candles.
Elizabeth felt her heart beating rapidly, and she instantly understood the situation.
Looking around slightly from the corner of her eye, she wanted to find Mr. Darcy, but found no trace of him.
"Mr. Darcy—"
She called softly, and walked forward unconsciously.
At the end is a love candlestick surrounded by candles.
In the center of the candlestick is a letter wrapped in colorful letter paper with Mr. Darcy's handwriting on it.
Elizabeth opened the top one, October NO.15, Tuesday.
"Family business well taken care of, time to visit my old friend Mr Bingley. The local Sir Lucas had a ball, what a bummer. But one of the ladies seemed to be having some fun. I was very surprised. "
……
"October NO.15, Tuesday. A versatile lady should know how to read and music, but this lady turned down my invitation to dance because of the piano."
……
"Wednesday, October [-]th. The lady has not been seen in Meryton society for a fortnight."
……
"Friday, November [-]st. Mr. Elton is in close contact with this lady?"
……
"Thursday, November fourteenth. A remark I made inadvertently made the lady angry. She seemed to be calm and unaffected—and I—and I couldn't concentrate for a day."
……
"Wednesday, November [-]th. We're reconciled. I actually had a strange dream—I proposed to this lady, but I didn't have any objection at all."
……
"Saturday, November 23. What a lovely date, I like London very much."
……
There are not many words, and the semantics are concise. But the emotion is getting stronger and stronger.
Elizabeth turned the page slowly, sometimes laughing, sometimes subconsciously smirking.
Sometimes the reproachful tone of "Mr. Darcy" would blurt out, and her energy was completely concentrated on the letter paper, and she didn't notice the movement around her at all.
"Saturday, January fourteenth. I haven't seen Miss Elizabeth for the twentieth. I miss her very much."
……
"Sunday, January [-]th. I propose to Miss Elizabeth."
……
"Monday, January [-]. There seems to be a barrier between us. I wonder what it is and how we need to get over it."
……
Unconsciously, Elizabeth felt that tears had slowly blurred her eyes.
"Monday, March [-]th. I want to give Miss Elizabeth a safe haven. But I can't do it yet."
……
"Tuesday, March [-]. The exchange of letters with Miss Elizabeth is the happiest thing in my day."
……
"Wednesday, May [-]th. Dear Elizabeth, I have missed you so much."
……
"June eighteenth."
There was no writing on the letter paper, but a piece protruded from the envelope.
Elizabeth carefully took out the thing—it turned out to be a ring.
A very gorgeous diamond, full in size and pure in color.
Elizabeth was stunned.
Then she felt that there was an extra person next to her.
It was her Mr. Darcy.
She looked at him, and he looked at her.
There are no words, but there are thousands of words in the eyes.
Mr. Darcy was the first to break the silence: "Dear Miss Elizabeth—"
"Ok?"
He paused.
"It's Mrs. Darcy." Corrected Elizabeth tearfully.
Mr. Darcy refrained from addressing him this time by his favorite title.
"My dearest Miss Elizabeth Bennet." He looked at her affectionately, "will you let me wear it on your ring finger?"
