[Pride and Prejudice] Rich Lady
Chapter 19 Changes
"Honey, you must write to me!" Laura urged repeatedly, and finally sent Elizabeth to the carriage reluctantly.
The coachman Algernon put Elizabeth's salute in the box on the front axle of the carriage, and stood aside waiting for the two ladies to bid farewell.
"Okay, Laura. We are not separated for a long time. We can eat and live together again after three weeks." Elizabeth reassured her dear friend helplessly, "In the whole of Tauris, no one is closer than us." So really There is no need to act as if we are about to part ways and lose friends.
Laura had already decided to return to the baron's mansion two days before Easter, so it made sense for her to be so reluctant to leave Elizabeth. After all, without a close friend with deep affection, Tao Lisi inevitably felt lonely in her dormitory.
Laura held Elizabeth's hand, and showed wet eyes like a deer to the arrogant and indifferent young lady outside.Elizabeth had to be defeated: "I promise to write to you! And I promise you will draw a new picture book during the holidays."
Obviously the second sentence is the key to impress the baroness, Laura immediately straightened her back and waved to Elizabeth as she wished: "Best trip, Lizzie."
Only then did their old friend, Mr. Algernon, come forward and close the carriage door—yes, Doris was willing to provide the carriage and driver to take the girls home from the college, for a few shillings. This is just what Elizabeth wanted, but most of the girls sent letters to their families in advance, waiting for their carriages and servants.Fortunately, it was very convenient for Elizabeth. She specifically asked Mr. Algernon and asked the familiar coachman to give her a ride.
"Lizzie, why didn't you choose Baroch, this kind of green is too simple!" Laura complained to her by the glass window about the simplicity of the carriage.
Apparently, our baroness has a bit of "returning riches and honor" thinking. In terms of kites, the net worth of the two ladies is not the same, and the purses are full of gold guineas.Tao Lisi has all kinds of carriages, the Cuishi carriage that Elizabeth chose is just the most common two-wheeled carriage, while the Baroch mentioned by Laura is a luxurious open four-wheeled carriage. For ten shillings more, Elizabeth could have returned home in Baroch: no gentleman in Longbourne, or even Meryton, owned such a carriage.
"Believe me, if you go back like this, people will definitely gossip!" Laura looked at her friend's plain long dress, except for the string of pearl necklaces around her neck, her bald hair and wrists.
She has too much experience: riding home in a carriage like a good friend, and dressing so plainly and frugally, will definitely attract a lot of gossip, and those gossips will definitely say, "Look, Elizabeth of the Bennet family lived outside It's so unsatisfactory, I have to pity this girl" and so on.
Elizabeth is aware of her friend's kindness, but before the pound in her hand can be given out in a fair manner, she must endure this: making a fortune silently requires a comeback price.Besides, Elizabeth is not a flamboyant character. She has a lot of things to do this Easter holiday, and she doesn't want to waste time dealing with those ladies who are too busy to panic.
"Honey, I have to leave!" Elizabeth said, "If you can, please visit Mrs. Zhang more often."
This Mrs. Zhang is the old lady from the Ming Dynasty. Elizabeth is very friendly with her and often visits and keeps her company. She doesn't like being called "Madame" very much, but the pronunciation of "Madam Zhang" is not very friendly to most British people.
"I will!" Laura readily agreed.Although Mrs. Zhang likes Lizzie the most, she is more polite to other ladies, but Laura knows that the dessert shop they are going to open is thanks to this respectable lady. dessert.I also have to thank her for the sale of kites.
Cui Shi is very light, and it only takes about four hours to return to Longborn.
Ever since the black horse pulling the cart started to walk away, Elizabeth's heart soared high. She was looking at the scenery along the way: passing by the bustling London city, the bustling shops in the west end and the fashionable ladies and gentlemen, the narrow streets in the east end and the child laborers running around... Gradually, the green became more and more crowded. The houses were gone, and the hedges, the grass, and the earth began to fill the eyes, and even the air was fresh.
Until noon, the familiar scenery warmed Elizabeth's eyes.
"Go that way, Monsieur Algernon," said Elizabeth, pointing to a winding road less traveled by.
Although she doesn't care about other people's comments, she also wants to avoid some troubles as much as possible: Mrs. Ron's home is on the side of the road that people in the village often walk. This lady is best at caring about other people's homes and spreading them go out.
The carriage turned to a small road, Elizabeth stretched her neck, and saw the small lake near the back of Bennet's house through the gap in the hedge:
At this time, the sun is warm, and the green trees shade the quiet lakeside. On the green grass, birds and red squirrels are jumping around, and storks are striding forward with two red legs.
As beautiful as a fairy tale.
"Oh, my God, Miss Elizabeth? You're home!" Mrs. Hill, the housekeeper of the Bennet family, was directing the servants to carry things in the courtyard.
Mrs. Hill's screams set off the entire Bennet family.
The ladies ran out of the house with their long skirts in their hands, and even Mr. Bennet couldn't help but greet him.
Algernon moved the salute for her, greeted the Bennets, and said goodbye to Elizabeth: "Happy holidays, miss."
"Thank you, sir." Elizabeth thanked: "Goodbye, Algernon."
"Oh, Lizzie, you're finally home, I miss you so much!" Jane stepped forward to hug her.
Elizabeth embraced her dear elder sister and walked towards Mr. and Mrs. Bennet: "I miss you too, very much!"
Mrs. Bennet's eyes were already filled with tears. She wiped the corners of her eyes with her hands, hugged the disobedient second daughter, and said repeatedly: "You bad girl, you always worry my mother, why didn't you tell us in advance? Talk to your uncle, he will pick you up!"
Elizabeth patted her on the back lightly, and comforted her: "Good mother, Taurice College has a carriage to take students home. The business of Uncle Gardner's store is booming. I really don't want him to delay things for me."
Mr. Bennet said softly, pretending to be majestic: "Okay, don't crowd in front of the door, you will make people laugh!"
"How are you, Daddy? Why don't you write to me?"
Mr. Bennet couldn't keep the serious expression on his face. He opened his arms to welcome his most beloved daughter: "Little villain, you don't only write letters with your sister!"
Reunions are always difficult, and it was not until dinner that everyone managed to calm down the excitement.
Half a year's life in Taurus made Elizabeth a little unaccustomed to having dinner at three o'clock in the afternoon. The meal time in the college was similar to that of the nobles in London. They had three meals a day, and dinner would be around six o'clock.
But the dinner was just right for Elizabeth who hadn't eaten since breakfast.
Mrs. Georgia still cooked her signature dishes, Oatmeal with Mushroom Fish Fillet and Oatmeal with Shrimp and Egg Flowers, two dishes taught by Elizabeth, to welcome Miss Second home.
Drinking this porridge again made Elizabeth very pleasantly surprised and nostalgic. The food at Taurice Academy is delicious, but the girls are never allowed to come near the kitchen. Mrs. Judith will only ask the girls to memorize some recipes, and what they should learn is to appreciate the freshness of fine wine, food and ingredients.Except for a few dim sums at Mrs. Zhang's, Elizabeth hasn't been able to taste the delicacies of Dazhonghua for a long time.
The few hours at home had not shocked Elizabeth as much as the hour of dinner!
During the whole meal, Lydia and Kitty were not heard laughing loudly, and even Mrs. Bennet did not shout.
Elizabeth observed carefully: Leaving aside Mrs. Bennet, the sisters, from Jane to Lydia, all had straight backs and did not lean on the back of the chair at all.Among them, Jane's performance surprised her even more: she only slightly nodded when drinking soup, and brought the food to her mouth at other times, and did not make a single mistake of "bending down to reach the food" which is the most error-prone when learning etiquette .Except for the slightly rigid movements, it is almost like the dining model of an English lady who was strictly taught by Mrs. Judith. And the little sisters also impressed Elizabeth.
"Dear Jane, how did you do it?" Elizabeth praised her with admiration, and practiced these boring etiquette so well with only those few pages of dry letter paper.
Jane's face was slightly flushed, and she smiled and said to her closest sister: "It's all thanks to you, Lizzie!"
Lydia added cheerfully: "In addition, we also visited Mrs. Carmela in Meryton. She is so serious that no one cares about her except Jane."
Kitty said: "And Mary, she found in the public library in Meryton a "Women's Manners and Culture", which is said to have been written by a fallen nobleman, full of harsh words, can write it Someone must know good manners—God knows what horn Mary came out of?"
Elizabeth looked at Mary. The third lady of the Bennet family was still a little reticent, but she smiled so much that she even showed her teeth.
"Even the librarian in Clark didn't know there was such a book!" Jane said with a smile, "Our Mary is amazing!"
Mr. Bennet sat at the head, looking at his daughters, his brown and black eyes were full of joy and contentment.
What Elizabeth didn't know was that although the changes in the Bennet family had brought her great surprise, the surprise was less than one-tenth of what she had brought. In the eyes of the Miss Bennets, their newly-returned sisters behaved and talked like the girls of the noble families in the city who go to the high balls and salons, and almost become strange.Fortunately, she was still so kind, which dispelled everyone's feeling of strangeness.
After a hot dinner, it’s time for the family to sit around in the lounge and drink tea.The hostess of the Bennet family or Miss Jane should have made the tea, but today, everyone unanimously gave this honor to dear Elizabeth.Who asked her to bring back a can of oriental tea that looked very expensive at first sight?
After tasting the fragrant oriental Pu'er, two little sisters, Kitty and Lydia, took Elizabeth and asked her to tell about the life in the college and what she had seen in London.
"We heard that this year's London social season is very lively, and there are many surprises! It's a pity that the party in the city won't invite country girls, otherwise I really want to see and see." Lydia said.
"The ladies in the city are the most fashionable. They have a toy called a kite, which is very pretty and amusing," said Kitty. "Have you seen Lizzie? Is it sold in the shops in the city, Merry?" You can't find anything like this in a store in Tonton."
Lydia nodded quickly: "Miss Jin has one, it was given to her by her rich grandfather—but she was reluctant to take it down for us to take a closer look, and she also refused to put it in the sky, for fear of messing up the kite. It's broken. I just want to hang it high on the wall."
Even Mary said: "Such a big kite, oh, it is really beautiful, but how did it fly to the sky? I have read many books, but I still can't figure it out."
The eager looks of the little sisters made Elizabeth a little sad. She stood up, clapped her hands gently, and said with a smile: "It's time for Elizabeth's gift!"
"I have prepared a lot of presents for you, is there anyone willing to help me bring the salutes? Those two boxes are really heavy."
The maid Sarah quickly said, "Let me go. I'll move Miss Elizabeth right away."
"You can't do it by yourself," said Jane, always so considerate. "The suitcase Lizzie brought back was a bit big."
Mary, Kitty, and Lydia all rose, in great surprise.
Lydia said to her two younger sisters: "I am the tallest, I will help Lizzie!"
Kitty surrounded Elizabeth like a happy bird: "Are there so many?"
Mary was happy but worried: "Lizzie, have you saved all your money to buy us presents?"
Mrs. Bennet also stood up, wanting to have fun with her daughters, but was stopped by Mr. Bennet: "Okay, tell their sisters to go. My good wife, you'd better rest."
Mrs. Bennet had to call the housekeeper: "Mrs. Hill, you go and help the ladies too. I'm worried that these stupid girls will drop the boxes and swell their toes."
Surrounded by Elizabeth, the five sisters happily ran upstairs.
The Bennets were the only ones left in the downstairs drawing room.Mrs. Bennet stood up and walked around her husband, stopping from time to time to look towards the stairs, listening to the laughter upstairs, and muttering in her mouth.
Mr. Bennet coughed: "Dear Mrs. Bennet, please sit down! You're making my head hurt!"
"My dear sir!" whispered his wife, covering her mouth, "you hurt me so much. I was worried about my daughters, and you said that."
"Obviously you didn't allow me to help them, but you saw those two boxes just now, they are so big!" Mrs. Bennet couldn't be more dissatisfied, "Why don't you feel sorry for your daughters? You were the most partial to Lizzie before. Already!"
"Oh, my poor little Lizzie, she has suffered so much outside, and yet she still wants to prepare presents for her family! Her father is not touched at all!"
Mrs. Bennet always impressed her dear husband with his ability to strike back.It was a good thing she had seldom heard of his old friend lately: that delicate nerve, Mr. Bennet thought.
But right now—
"You don't care about the children, and you don't understand my fragile nerves at all." His good wife sniffed and said aggrievedly.
"It's my fault! My dear lady, please sit down and rest," said Mr. Bennet at once. "Don't worry the children and think I've pissed you off again."
Fortunately, the wife had a simple mind. When she heard her husband give in, she immediately obeyed her husband's wishes and sat next to him again.
Mr. Bennet thought about it, looked at his wife and said tentatively: "It seems that Lizzie bought a lot of things, I'm really worried that she saved all her pocket money to buy gifts."
Mrs. Bennet had a sore nose, and became emotional again: "My poor little Lizzie, although I blame her for being disobedient and leaving me early, I really love her. Mr. Bennet, have you seen that?" ? Our Lizzie doesn't even have a nice hat!"
"Oh, Lizzie is such a silly girl!" Mr. Bennet shook his head: "She must be out of money."
"No, I bought so many gifts for my family!" Madam said immediately, "Good sir, I know you are strict with your daughters. But I beg you, allow me to give Lizzie some more money."
She begged: "You know, I've saved a lot for the house since you forbade me to give the children pocket-money. I won't give her a penny more than ten pounds! Please, good sir!"
Mr. Bennet had achieved his goal, and he still pretended to think for a while, until he heard the voice upstairs, and finally agreed reluctantly.
Mrs. Bennet was very happy. She said: "I will give it to her secretly, and I will never let other daughters know!"
"Then I'll give her ten pounds too," said the gentleman. "It's not easy to make her feel that her parents are different."
"Oh. I knew it! You are still a good father who loves the children the most!" Mrs. Bennet was very moved.
