Chapter 1 Wedges

Will Collins, 48, is a wealthy New York businessman who lives in a luxury villa on Long Island with his wife and children.

The weather was just right for this day. The continuous rain in the past few days finally turned on the water valve, and it was replaced by a clear blue sky.The breeze from the window caressed Mr. Collins's face gently, as if Lisa, the youngest child in the family, was stroking her father's stubbled cheek with her tender little hand.

"Today is really a good day! Helena, I think we can go outside for a walk." Will put down the boring newspaper in his hand. The news of Americans is the same every day, nothing more than government work and folk anecdotes. For this British gentleman who has lived in the United States for only a dozen years, excessive seriousness and curiosity are like the north and south poles of a magnet-each one is unbearable.

Helena was about to answer her husband's words, but was interrupted by the servant first.I saw the maid say something to Mrs. Collins. She looked at Will after listening, and said, "Unfortunately, our plan may have to be postponed. Now there is a young lady sitting in the living room and saying that she must See you, Will."

"A lady?" Mr. Collins frowned suspiciously. He couldn't remember having seen any young girl he'd ever seen, except Lisa. However, the most important thing right now is to explain to his wife.So he hurriedly continued, "Helena, you have to trust me. I don't know any young girls, maybe this lady has found the wrong person..."

"Anyway, let's talk about it after we meet." Helena didn't agree with him.The expressionless hostess turned around and walked out of the study first, her calm appearance buried the anger that was about to burst out.

Looking at his wife's back, Will hurriedly followed her in two steps, and finally saw the true face of the mysterious girl in the living room. This is a beautiful woman with black hair, in her early thirties, wearing an elegant dark blue dress, with a blue hat and a suitcase beside her, obviously coming from a long way.As soon as she saw Will, she immediately grinned happily: "You are Mr. Collins!"

"You are..." Will was sure he had never met the lady.He sneaked a glance at his wife next to him, and saw that she had a tense expression, her hands were folded in front of her body, and she looked down at the guests, as if announcing her high status in this family.

"I'm Maria Lawrence." The lady reached out and shook Will's hand, "My husband is Alexander Lawrence."

Hearing this name, the couple were both taken aback. Will's heart beat so violently it nearly jumped out of his chest. He grabbed Mrs. Lawrence's shoulders and asked eagerly: "How is Alex recently? I haven't seen him for many years. I only heard that he went to Abyssinia..."

Mrs. Lawrence withdrew her smile just now, lowered her head to look at the floor, and answered in a soft voice after a few seconds: "...he died last year."

Hearing the news, Will's eyes turned from full of expectation to dull.He let go of Mrs. Lawrence, and walked a few steps with stiff legs like a mummy, muttering: "It's a pity..."

"I'm here this time to give these to you." Mrs. Lawrence took out a stack of thick letters from the suitcase, each of which was carefully bound and written in beautiful cursive letters Author: Received by Will Collins.

"My husband used to write in his study, and I found this when sorting out his belongings..." Mrs. Lawrence explained, "Philip gave me your address, so I came to you. I thought, maybe you will need These."

Will accepted the pile of letters with trembling hands, like receiving a hardcover Bible. He stroked the long-dried ink writing on it with his fingers for a long time, and fell into a long, distant memory...

The author has something to say: a short story written recently, [-] words.Think of it as a practice pen.A lot of inspiration comes from "Wilde's Lover", "From the Depths" and "Total Eclipse of the Heart".
