Rise of the Argentine Empire
#36 - Brotherhood of Martial Virtue
While Saint Herse was diligently training, the "Bird Brotherhood" branch in Science City was experiencing its moment of glory.
The Bird Brotherhood's expansion was accelerating, its underground influence growing, engaging in bullying tactics, and even attempting to interfere with labor unions, manipulate strikes, and even smuggle weapons, which was quite outrageous.
The undercover team led by Guerrero Gattuso had successfully infiltrated the Brotherhood's outer organizations. It was unclear whether Guerrero was naturally a hustler, but he quickly penetrated the Bird Brotherhood's ranks within days, achieving rapid promotion.
Guerrero was originally an ordinary soldier under Saint Herse's squad, who trained very hard and didn't like to waste money. During the military exercises, he seemed like a truly honest person. Saint Herse swore that this Guerrero was definitely like Aragon, but Saint Herse realized he was completely wrong.
Guerrero retired not long after the military exercises ended. Somehow, he suddenly unleashed himself, releasing his true nature. He was recruited back for this military operation.
Saint Herse almost didn't recognize him, looking at Guerrero's drastically changed appearance, occasionally spouting slang and jargon. Even Saint Herse felt uncomfortable with his driving speed.
However, after a drinking session, Guerrero revealed his true feelings in front of his old leader, Saint Herse.
It turned out that Guerrero was really an honest person at first, but since retiring, the whole world had changed. First, his girlfriend of several years dumped him, complaining that he was broke and unromantic, among other things. Indeed, Guerrero's savings had been squandered by that girlfriend.
Then, he couldn't find a job. At that time, Saint Herse was busy with exams and didn't know that these old subordinates had retired.
It wasn't until Guerrero saw his ex-girlfriend reveling with her new boyfriend at a hotel that he dared to believe it.
So Guerrero went to confront her and was beaten up by his ex-girlfriend's current boyfriend, only then realizing that he had been cheated on long ago.
As a result, Guerrero spent his days crying, hanging out in bars, and drinking heavily, falling into depravity for a while.
By the way, that bar was called "The Brave Man's Bar." In order to adapt to the environment, Guerrero constantly learned the latest slang, changed his honest image, spent a lot of money on new outfits, and began to frequent bars, underground casinos, and worked as a glorious security guard and a side job – a broker.
Unexpectedly, Guerrero really had a talent for brokering. Well, a broker is an intermediary. To put it bluntly, it's a pimp, but Guerrero's brokerage business was diverse, getting involved in everything. Of course, he would never get involved in actual pimping. Gradually, he had a stable income, then quit his security guard job, and quit heavy drinking, only occasionally having a small drink in business situations.
Of course, Guerrero was also the type to take revenge. He hired someone to beat up his ex-girlfriend's current boyfriend, but that was it. He didn't bother with any retaliation from his ex-girlfriend, and from then on, they were strangers. He realized that he had been really stupid before.
Saint Herse thought, how come he hadn't discovered Guerrero's talent before? Isn't this kind of person naturally suited for intelligence work? Moreover, Guerrero was doing very well as a broker, but he would occasionally be bullied by the Bird Brotherhood. The Bird Brotherhood had also invited Guerrero to join many times, but he had never agreed. This time, when Saint Herse was in trouble, Guerrero returned immediately, which made Saint Herse quite touched.
It seemed that Guerrero was at most a bit of a repressed show-off, but he was still a very upright person. Such talent was too rare.
So Guerrero was arranged by Saint Herse to go into the Bird Brotherhood. Well, after all, fighting with real guns was a bit dangerous. Doing undercover work to collect intelligence, cooperating from the inside and outside, was quite suitable. Anyway, Guerrero had been invited several times. Saint Herse also arranged two or three tight-lipped people to protect him.
Of course, Saint Herse also taught some undercover skills based on his understanding of undercover infiltration, such as keeping your eyes wide open, not touching your nose often, drinking the boss's favorite drink, speaking seven parts truth and three parts lies, and not putting your hands in your pockets often, and so on.
"Saint Boss, are you kidding me?" Guerrero thought, this has nothing to do with undercover work.
"Well, just kidding. Relax, relax. It's just a simple job. I'll find you a girlfriend then,"
"No way, Saint Boss, you don't even have a girlfriend yourself. Are you still not awake from last night?" This sentence seemed to stab Saint Herse in the chest, and then rub salt in the wound.
"......Don't expose the boss," Aragon said from the side. Well, Aragon is still more honest.
"The boss must have drunk too much. How could he have a girlfriend? He's talking nonsense," Aragon immediately added. Aragon has also learned to be bad, complaining about Saint Herse.
"Okay, Saint Boss, is there anything else you need to tell me?" Guerrero scratched his head, seeming to have said something wrong, seeing Saint Boss looking a little unhappy.
"Well, it's nothing. Be sure to pay attention to safety. Have some peanuts first." Saint Herse lit a cigarette, intending to calm down first.
No need to deliberately look for intelligence, safety first. Saint Herse told Guerrero to be sure to pay attention to safety. Yes, Saint Herse was also a pitfall, arranging for Guerrero to go out just because he was a talent.
After calming down, Saint Herse fiercely gnawed on half a roasted lamb leg, drank a few mouthfuls of beer, and started his bragging mode again.
"As an undercover agent, the first thing is not to disguise yourself, but to destroy yourself," Saint Herse said exaggeratedly, also coordinating with gestures.
"Pity for the enemy is cruelty to yourself in the future,"
"Never sympathize with these criminals!"
"Yes, Boss," a group of people echoed. These were all people chosen by Saint Herse, except for Aragon next to him. The boss seemed to be really drunk.
Some of the last words made Guerrero a little hot-blooded, wanting to pick up an MP44 and spray him with a burst. Looking at his subordinates with flushed faces, Saint Herse realized that he seemed to have gone a little too far, telling him to be sure to stay calm.
Well, Saint Herse felt that he wasn't drunk, and then was carried back to the marching bed by his subordinates, only waking up the next day.
......
As a crucial undercover agent within the Brotherhood, Guerrero was thriving, a level of success Saint-Hesse hadn't yet achieved. He later learned that this information was disseminated by Mad Dog Rooney to unite his subordinates, and it was mostly accurate. Guerrero was still investigating deeper information, such as the gang's exact numbers, peripheral industry statistics, firearms and ammunition, and the number of sentries and lookouts.
Collecting this information would take time, and the intelligence couldn't be gathered too quickly to prevent accidents and minimize contact.
The first batch of intelligence arrived, a detailed version that hadn't existed before.
Saint-Hesse studied the information, his worldview shattering into pieces.
At the same time, he was grateful that this "Byrd Brotherhood" wasn't the real deal. Otherwise, Saint-Hesse truly suspected that the undercover agents he sent might be turned. The current "Byrd Brotherhood" branch in Ke City was just a weakened version.
Unlike the European gangs Saint-Hesse had imagined, this "Byrd Brotherhood" wasn't from Soviet Russia, the Italian Mafia, or some high-end, ancient Assassin Brotherhood. The organization's predecessor was actually founded by members of a fraternity at a well-known university in Los Santos, America. However, the leader, Byrd Lucas, was quite interesting.
He graduated from university during the Great Depression and couldn't find a job after months of searching. Humiliated, he saw how well the city's gangs were doing and, in a fit of pique, started his own gang, naming it the "Byrd Brotherhood" after himself. In the beginning, he recruited classmates, and they quickly agreed. However, the weak college students lacked combat power, so they also lured unemployed white-collar and blue-collar workers in the city to join, quickly expanding to a scale of twenty or thirty people, becoming a small gang.
Byrd Lucas started gang activities under the name of the "Byrd Brotherhood," proclaiming that joining the Byrd Brotherhood meant becoming brothers. With Prohibition rampant in America and no gun control, these highly intelligent criminals embarked on the American-style gangster path, doing it with great fervor. Most of the original American gangs were from the lower and middle classes, but now a formidable one had arrived, so it grew bigger and bigger. At its peak, it had hundreds or even thousands of members, developing rapidly in Los Santos and opening branches in New York, Chicago, Houston, and Boston.
Life became increasingly prosperous, and their gang rules were also quite interesting, something about equality for all but with a hierarchy, somewhat like traditional sales. As expected of American college students, this was the predecessor of "Amway." They operated the gang in a formalized manner, which explains why it developed so quickly.
The "Byrd Brotherhood" was more formal than traditional American family-style gangs. They were meritocratic, very united, and had their own underground "business," opening distilleries and selling alcohol, earning substantial profits that allowed them to purchase more and better weapons. Other gangs retreated steadily, and they quickly became one of the most powerful gang groups in Los Santos.
Then World War II came, and the gang disbanded, and the "Byrd Brotherhood" disintegrated.
During World War II, they joined the American army, and Byrd Lucas was killed in action, apparently by a mortar from the Little Harmony Clan. A generation of heroes had fallen.
Logically, after the war, this "Byrd Brotherhood" should have completely disintegrated, after all, it was just one of thousands of gang groups in the United States. However, it didn't. A legendary figure emerged, a former underling of the original "Byrd Brotherhood," a veteran who couldn't find a job after the war. So, he restarted the "Byrd Brotherhood" brand, turning it into a notorious and powerful gang, a "veteran association-style" gang full of martial virtues.
After reading this history, Saint-Hesse was somewhat impressed by the "Byrd Brotherhood." However, the fewer enemies, the better.
The current intelligence on the Brotherhood wasn't very detailed; most of it was already public knowledge.
Just as Saint-Hesse was planning a military encirclement and suppression, he heard bad news. It seemed that the operation had been leaked, though he didn't know by whom. Saint-Hesse's first reaction was that it couldn't be true. Then he discovered that the leak came from an officer in the Eighth Brigade. He also wanted to suppress the bandits, so he went to the commander, who revealed that someone was already doing it. Then, somehow, the news leaked out. "I really want to thank your ancestors. The security work is like a sieve!" Or did the big boss just blurt it out?
So, Mad Dog Rooney, with his keen sense of information, learned about the news through Abraham of the Police Department. Fortunately, the undercover agents Saint-Hesse had arranged were not on active duty. This wasn't within the initial plan, so they weren't in immediate danger. Guerrero was still safe, and Saint-Hesse breathed a sigh of relief.
Fortunately, this wouldn't shock Saint-Hesse too much. He had become largely immune to the oddities of the military. The boss leaking secrets, a slip of the tongue after drinking? He could only forgive him.
As for whether to proceed with the Eureka Plan, the answer was definitely yes.
Saint-Hesse continued to arrange the plan, while also reducing contact with Guerrero, preparing to take them down as quickly as possible.
