Mystery: I Married the Queen of Mystery

#113 - The gaze from the gods

The sound of Max's knock on the door jolted Audis awake.

The captain of the "Mechanical Hearts" team rarely came to Audis outside of work hours. Usually, a visit at this time meant something important.

After Audis opened the door, he warily surveyed the surrounding street, finding no suspicious individuals. Then, he said to Max, "Come inside."

Once inside, Max didn't rush to state his purpose but carefully scrutinized Audis.

Audis noticed something was off with his good friend: "What's wrong?"

"Nothing," Max replied, averting his gaze. "I just saw in the newspaper last night that there's another gathering of the Mysticism Research Society today, so I came to tell you that we're no longer purchasing Rosell the Great's relics."

Audis nodded, watching Max, waiting for the "important matter" he alluded to.

Max said, "I just came to tell you that."

"Huh?" Audis thought he'd misheard. "You knocked on my door early in the morning just for that?"

"What else?" Max chuckled. "If you acquire any more of the Emperor's relics, but the 'Mechanical Hearts' can't reimburse you, wouldn't you say that's a big deal?"

Hearing Max say that, Audis immediately realized, "That is indeed a big deal!"

"Alright, I worked the night shift and need to get back to sleep," Max yawned. "At times like this, I always envy the 'Night Watchers,' who only need to sleep two or three hours a day."

As he left, Max gave Audis another deep look. The higher-ups of the Church had once speculated that three years ago, an ancient and mysterious entity had awakened within Audis!

For three years, Max had already regarded the person before him as Audis, dismissing the higher-ups' speculations.

However, the urgent telegram from headquarters yesterday had made him recall those things.

Is the person before me truly just an ordinary man? Would an ordinary man advance twice in one month?

But quickly, Max averted his gaze and hurried away.

Watching Max's departing figure, Audis felt that something was amiss.

He started brewing himself coffee, pondering Max's unusual behavior.

Soon, a startling thought appeared in Audis's mind: The Church of the God of Steam and Machinery knows about my advancement!

But then, Audis felt that this wasn't so surprising. After all, I might have been involved in a high-level "Secret Suppliant" case three years ago. Only three years have passed; the Church of Steam couldn't have forgotten about it.

Audis took a deep breath, suddenly noticing that the coffee had overflowed from the cup, spilling all over the counter.

He quickly leaned over and took a sip, then wiped the coffee clean with a rag.

Sipping his coffee, Audis felt somewhat despairing. The Church of Steam's attention to him hadn't diminished in the slightest, or rather, the God of Steam and Machinery was still paying close attention to him.

That was, after all, a deity, a lofty god.

Even if the God of Steam and Machinery didn't personally pay attention to Audis, but simply had the Church's angels, or even just a demigod, watching him, it wasn't something Audis could shake off at the moment.

Audis put his hand on his forehead, then supported his head with one arm, suddenly wondering if he should change his plans, not leave Backlund, but join the Church of the God of Steam and Machinery?

Although that would make it difficult to escape the control of the God of Steam and Machinery, he could still play dumb with the God of Steam and Machinery.

Anyway, before he clearly showed any connection with the "Knowledge Moor," the God of Steam and Machinery wouldn't expose this pretense, much less descend to talk to him.

Then he might as well play dumb and continue advancing using the Church of Steam…

But living like that would be too painful!

Suddenly, Audis thought of the powerful magic formations used by the Second Epoch giants and dragons that he had seen in the "Knowledge Moor"!

He suddenly sat up straight: He could use those new knowledge to try to find a way to temporarily hide himself! The things from that time were a bit like the "Russians'" things, simple, crude, but with a bit of a "miracle through brute force" feel!

Audis cheered himself up: So what if it's a god? I come from a place that doesn't believe in gods! Usually, we burn incense for the gods and Buddhas, asking them to bless us with peace, but if they can't protect us, we still ignore them.

Of course, the gods and Buddhas of that time were different from the gods of this world. The gods of this world truly exist.

However, this gave Audis the idea of taking a gamble, rather than immediately compromising with the gods.

But he knew that this wasn't a problem that could be solved overnight. He had to eat one bite at a time, and do things one at a time. When it was time for breakfast, he still had to eat breakfast first.

West Borough, 25 Lily Street.

No mistakes, first release, first content, look at it one by one!

Miss Lisa's maid went out early in the morning with a basket to find places to buy breakfast, as well as fresh vegetables and meat.

Miss Lisa is the mistress favored by Viscount Wade.

Last night, a fire suddenly broke out at Miss Lisa's residence, and she moved to Lily Street overnight, not even having time to notify the chef.

So today's breakfast couldn't be made herself, and she could only go out to buy a little, asking the Viscount to make do with a meal.

The Viscount had left in a hurry at the time, and the servants of the Viscount's residence probably didn't know where Viscount Wade had gone, and there was no time to notify them to send breakfast here.

Moreover, it wouldn't be good to send someone to notify them, as the Viscountess might think this was a provocation by Miss Lisa.

When passing by a bakery, the maid smelled the aroma of bread, so she entered the store and bought two loaves of white bread.

At the same time, she saw that they were selling crispy croissant bread here, and it looked very delicate and delicious.

Of course, the maid knew that this was the Viscount's favorite, so she bought some without hesitation.

After buying vegetables and meat elsewhere, the maid returned to the new residence and placed the purchased breakfast on the dining table.

Around eight o'clock, Viscount Wade got up and came to the dining room with Miss Lisa, chatting and laughing.

The fifty-year-old Viscount was pleasantly surprised to find that there was his favorite crispy croissant bread on the table.

After asking the maid where it was bought, and having the personal male servant taste it, Viscount Wade bit into it without hesitation. The taste was not bad. Soon, a croissant bread had been eaten.

So, more than half an hour later, the Viscount didn't dare to leave the toilet at all.

After learning that he had eaten food laced with laxatives, he roared in the toilet, telling the bodyguards to find the culprit.

Two bodyguards brought the somewhat frightened maid downstairs to find Mr. Bivess and told him in detail about Viscount Wade's encounter.

This Bivess is a Sequence 6, an extraordinary bodyguard hired by Viscount Wade at great expense.

Extraordinary people at this level are somewhat different from other bodyguards.

He can protect the employer to find a mistress in the middle of the night, and he can also protect the employer to be intimate with the mistress, but don't expect him to guard outside all night.

Moreover, even aristocratic employers like Viscount Wade, who have a "bloodline theory," dare not treat him too much like a servant.

This was also within Audis and Mandy's calculations. Having just moved to a new place, even the most refined aristocrats will either go hungry or make do with a hasty breakfast on the first day.

Nobles like Viscount Wade would probably rather go hungry than eat outside food.

But if there was his favorite crispy croissant bread, it would be different. He would probably taste a bite or two.

And the laxative that Audis had prepared only needed a taste to be effective.

To prevent the laxatives in the personal servant's tasting session from being exposed, these laxatives would only take effect after half an hour. A hasty breakfast wouldn't wait half an hour, so the probability of success was high.

When Mandy learned that Viscount Wade's bodyguard had returned to the bakery with the maid, she knew that Mr. Gahr's plan had succeeded.

As for the owner and shop assistant of the bakery, they had already been sent out of Backlund. This Mr. Beevis would only know that they had moved away in a hurry, and he wouldn't be able to find any clues.
