#200 - Midnight Kitchen
Today, Yarrow found himself awake exceptionally early.
When he opened his eyes, it was still pitch black outside.
He yawned and glanced at the alarm clock on the bedside table.
"Hmm, it's only one o'clock... That means I only slept for three hours."
Peach Fox was still lying beside him, half her face buried in her fluffy tail, sleeping soundly.
Waking up in the early hours of the morning, he felt unusually clear-headed, without any drowsiness.
"This is probably what they call deep sleep," he thought, deciding to get up and go to the kitchen to make himself a cup of tea.
Walking into the living room, the lights were somewhat dim tonight, and the crystal lamp on the ceiling flickered intermittently.
"It's time to replace it," he thought.
In the kitchen, a kettle of water boiled. Just as he was about to steep the tea leaves, there was a sudden noise outside.
He was startled by the noise. His hand trembled, and the scalding hot water spilled onto the table.
"Sizz..."
He quickly retreated, put the kettle aside, and used a cloth to clean the table.
"What was that?"
After cleaning up, he walked out of the kitchen, wanting to see what had scared him.
A broken vase lay on the floor at the entrance.
Frowning slightly, he looked around.
In the dim light, there was no one else but him.
"Did a cat from outside get in?" he wondered.
If it were someone from the family, they wouldn't have broken a vase and run away, would they?
Little Gray Rabbit wouldn't run that fast either.
Sweeping up the fragments with a broom, he was about to go back when suddenly there was another noise. This time, as he looked over, the corner of his eye caught a glimpse of a figure flashing past at the end of the corridor. The ornaments and vases there had also been knocked over and shattered all over the floor.
"Who!" he shouted.
But there was no response.
"Venia? No, she doesn't have collision volume."
It couldn't be the girls in the family either; their behavior wouldn't be so abnormal.
"Could it be a thief?"
Yarrow suddenly perked up and immediately followed.
Turning the corner of the corridor, a door ahead was just closing.
It was the door to the storage room.
Locking onto the storage room, was it really a thief?
He strode forward, yanked open the door, and shouted inside:
"Get down! You're under arrest!"
What he saw was Evemina's shocked expression. She was facing away from the door, holding half a carrot that she hadn't finished eating.
Seeing Yarrow, her mouth, full of carrot, moved, and then she quickly swallowed.
"How did you get out?" Yarrow asked, his eyes twitching.
Evemina was still locked in the basement, planning to leave on her own after the time was up.
But now she was in the storage room, stealing carrots.
Discovering such an embarrassing behavior, her cheeks were a little red. She turned her face away and said softly:
"Using a little magic can still make my body ethereal, so I came out like this."
"Oh."
Both sides were silent. Yarrow, seeing the half carrot in her hand, realized that he had been forgetting a problem all along.
Now that Evemina was a physical being, she also needed to eat.
For a whole day, Evemina hadn't eaten anything other than the chili sauce he had forcibly fed her.
It was somewhat miserable...
In the kitchen, a glass of warm milk, a basket of bread, and a small dish of mayonnaise were placed in front of Evemina.
"Eat," Yarrow said.
Yarrow sat across the table, pouring himself a cup of freshly brewed tea.
Evemina looked at him warily, not moving.
"What, are you afraid I'm going to poison you?" Yarrow said.
"It's possible. After all, you wanted to kill me yesterday afternoon," Evemina said to him with a frown.
"I wouldn't use this method," Yarrow said.
"Eat with peace of mind. We've all let you go," he waved his hand and said.
Evemina was still a little wary. Her current body had made her lose the ability to penetrate other people's thoughts, so she couldn't confirm whether Yarrow had really let her go.
After hesitating again and again, she carefully picked up a piece of bread and took a small bite.
Filling her stomach was still the most important thing.
At the dining table, the gray-haired girl ate carefully, while Yarrow sat opposite her, sipping his rich black tea.
"This should be eaten with this," Yarrow said suddenly.
"What?" Evemina asked, chewing on the bread with a frown.
"This," Yarrow pointed to the small dish of mayonnaise on the table, "Bread dipped in this will taste better."
Evemina looked suspiciously at the pale yellow, viscous liquid in front of her.
"Heh, you wouldn't have a phobia of this kind of sauce now, would you?" Yarrow chuckled.
"Tch, isn't that all because of you?" Evemina glared at him angrily.
"Don't worry, this one is sweet," Yarrow said.
Evemina hesitated for a moment, but still dipped the half-eaten bread in her hand into the small dish.
Taking a bite of the bread with the pale yellow sauce, the gray eyes of the girl lit up.
Sure enough, even Evemina, this kind of unconventional creature, as long as she was a girl, liked sweets.
The speed at which the bread disappeared clearly accelerated.
"Speaking of which, have you never had any concept of these things before? Sweetness, spiciness?" Yarrow asked curiously.
"Of course not. I've always been a spiritual body. How could I feel these things?"
Evemina swallowed the bread in her mouth.
"All I can feel is emotions, feeling their emotions when they eat. I also thought that sweetness and the like were just a kind of emotion."
"Oh? That's quite interesting, isn't it? After living for so long, suddenly discovering that there is this kind of feeling, it's a surprise, isn't it?" Yarrow said.
"Heh, it's more like a fright. I was hung up and tortured for so long, and things were stolen..." Evemina chuckled twice.
"What? Are you still dissatisfied? Figure out your current position. You are the loser. It's already a great kindness that I'm treating you to food," Yarrow glared at her.
Evemina snorted, ignoring him and continuing to eat the bread.
Yarrow looked at her for a moment, hesitated a few times, and still asked:
"What did Zexia say to you before?"
"Why don't you go ask her yourself?" Evemina said, chewing on the bread, her words slurred.
"You know she won't tell me," Yarrow said.
"She also told me that this matter cannot be revealed."
"So what exactly is it?"
"I said I can't reveal it," Evemina glared at him resentfully.
"I have her mark on me now. If I make her unhappy, she will kill me directly."
"Okay, I won't ask," Yarrow spread his hands.
Evemina was silent for a while, but still said to him:
"Anyway, what she said has not much to do with you... Rather, it has not much to do with her herself."
"Hmm?"
About the Dragon Race, but something that has little to do with Zexia...
It was even more curious to talk about it.
The bread was finished, and the milk glass was empty.
Evemina was very satisfied, sprawled on the chair, gently stroking her little belly.
Yarrow put down the empty teacup with only tea leaves left:
"I will have Venia send you a portion of food later. Around this time tomorrow, you will be able to return to the dreamscape."
He looked at Evemina: "Although I let you go this time, if you affect our dreams again, I won't spare you."
"Tch, with a guy like you, who would want to come?" Evemina muttered.
"That couldn't be better."
Later, Evemina realized that the validity of her words only lasted for less than three months.
