Magic Underachiever

Chapter 7 Brown Jennings

The Dosan Railway crosses the Dosan Desert, connecting the western mainland of the Fleming Empire and the Marcellus Province in the east. It is an important lifeline of the Fleming Empire.

The Fleming Empire was once an inland country. The harsh living environment has cultivated the empire's culture of advocating military force. The Imperial Musketeer Cavalry Regiment is rampant on the continent. No country dares to fight against this cavalry corps with air-ground coordination, light and heavy cavalry, and direct magician corps in the field. At the same time, because of the powerful military force of the Fleming Empire, the surrounding countries have to unite to contain the expansion of this empire on horseback.

The long and narrow Dosan Desert from north to south is a natural barrier to block the Fleming Empire's eastward advance. The eastern countries also think that this death desert full of undead is enough to cut off the Fleming Empire's prying of the fertile land in the east.

But no one can understand the desire of an inland empire for the ocean. The eastern sea and the vaster world overseas always attract the generals, nobles and emperors of the Fleming Empire to look east.

Finally, two hundred years ago, the Vlomink Empire launched an eastward expedition with all its strength. The imperial army crossed the Dosan Death Desert, and after more than ten years of war, it captured the Marcellus Province, and got the outlet that the empire longed for.

But it is not easy to capture land, and it is even harder to keep the land!

All the eastern countries know what it means to let the Vlomink Empire gain access to the sea in the east and gain a foothold... The entire eastern part of the continent is exposed to the iron hoof of the Vlomink Empire.

So the Hundred Years' War broke out again around the fight for the Marcellus Province...

The existence of the Dosan Desert made it difficult for the empire to support the Marcellus War. Most of the war materials will be consumed in the transportation of the desert. They not only have to face the extremely harsh environment of the desert, but also the attacks of the undead. Moreover, the empire, which is located in the inland, is not well-off in terms of materials and war expenses. In difficult times, the empire did not send a grain of food or a soldier to the Marcellus Province in a year.

During the Hundred Years' War, the Fleming Empire lost control of the Marcellus Province several times. However, the thirst for the ocean made the entire empire tighten its belt, save everything that could be saved, and use all its national strength to support the counterattack army.

The Dosan Railway was built during the war. It took the Fleming Empire a hundred years to build an 800-kilometer railway.

Every sleeper on the railway was soaked with blood. There were road builders, imperial soldiers, and troops from the Eastern countries who came to destroy the railway.

A hundred years ago, the Dosan Railway was opened to traffic. When a steady stream of imperial troops and war supplies were sent to the Marcellus Province, the war that had been fought for a hundred years also ended.

The Eastern countries and the Fleming Empire exhausted the last bit of strength for this war, and no one could continue the war.

So the Treaty of Marcellus was signed.

The Eastern countries recognized the Fleming Empire's legitimate rule over the Marcellus Province; the Fleming Empire allowed the Marcellus Province to be autonomous and form a parliament. The empire can send a governor to the province of Marcellus. The governor is the commander of the empire's garrison in the province of Marcellus, but he is administratively controlled by the parliament. Provincial officials must be elected and then appointed by the parliament.

The two sides compromised, the treaty came into effect, and the province of Marcellus finally ushered in peace.

Although the Fleming Empire lost some of its rights in the province of Marcellus, it finally didn't have to continue to bleed for this land. The Hundred Years' War really exhausted Fleming's national strength. Even if the Dosan Railway was opened to traffic, they didn't know who would win or lose in the war...

The Eastern countries were unwilling to fight. They lived on the fertile land on the eastern coast. The comfortable life made their soldiers far less willing to fight than the Fleming Iron Cavalry. With the opening of the Dosan Railway, the Fleming Empire's support for the province of Marcellus will be more convenient, and the anti-war sentiment within the countries was serious.

After the signing of the treaty, the control and influence of the Fleming Empire on the Marcellus Province was greatly reduced. They believed that the residents of the Marcellus Province had the blood of the Eastern civilization, and they would use their own way to stop the expansion of the Western barbarians.

Peace lasted for a hundred years.

With a huge inland market, the Marcellus Province quickly became the Oriental Pearl of the Fleming Empire. The land here is fertile, the climate is suitable, and the maritime trade has made this province quickly get rid of the trauma of war and become the richest province in the empire.

The Dosan Railway connecting Fleming and the Marcellus Province has become the most important artery of the empire. Every day, countless people and materials travel on this death desert.

Brown Jennings is a 9th-level senior magician. He is a Fleming, and the eldest son of Baron Jennings. The baron has a manor near the imperial capital of the empire, with nearly a hundred serfs and dozens of free people. Baron Jennings also serves as a small official in an important department of the imperial capital. He has a little power and status... life is also worry-free.

But as the first heir to the baron, Brown Jennings had no interest in inheriting the manor and the baronial title.

This trip home was a torment for Brown Jennings.

The dirt roads in the countryside were full of potholes, and the ride was bumpy and uncomfortable. When walking, you had to pay attention to the animal feces under your feet. Normally, you could tolerate it if you were careful, but after a heavy rain, you could never imagine what kind of smell the whole manor exuded.

The people in the manor were even more vulgar. They hadn't taken a bath for months... their clothes were full of grease and stains, their hair was dirty and tangled, and lice were crawling on them arrogantly. What was even more terrifying was that they were all very enthusiastic about Brown Jennings, who was on vacation and home, and liked to gather around this worldly eldest son of the family.

And Baron Jennings. On the first day Brown just returned home, he was pulled out by his father, riding a horse and carrying a musket to hunt in the forest. He and his family knights rode on horses and shouted loudly to drive the deer, shooting everywhere unscrupulously. They also shamelessly opened their chests, revealing their thick chest hair, rubbing the mud on their bodies while telling dirty jokes. What made Brown want to vomit was... they filled the wine jug with deer blood, and then drank it in big gulps mixed with strong liquor... and let him drink it.

No wonder the people of Marseilles called the Flemings country barbarians.

I really don't know how my ancestors crossed the desert of death and conquered the beautiful province of Marseilles. This was probably what Brown Jennings liked most about this family. Without the Hundred Years' War, he would not have seen what civilization was like and would have been like his father... a foul-mouthed drunkard.

Fortunately... the vacation was finally over.
