Chapter 1 The Winter is Coming
The wind is howling.
The snowflakes in the sky are like goose feathers, fluttering wantonly under the strong wind. The entire Jiuji Continent is covered with a vast silver quilt tonight.
Gus opened the window wide and let the cold wind blow into the simple room. Even though Gus was wrapped in layers of quilts, he still couldn't help but shiver.
The wind was so strong that although there were many quilts, there was very little cotton material inside. Most of them were just a thin blanket.
Gus loves winter but is afraid of it.
The arrival of winter means that you don’t have to worry about your livelihood in this season. Winter is here, and the Winter Yang Festival is coming.
As the grandest festival on the Jiuji Continent, poor people can receive food relief from the empire.
Moreover, in order to celebrate this festival, large families have to recruit some servants temporarily. As long as Gus is selected, the entire winter expenses will be covered.
The town where Gus is located is not big, just in the northernmost part of the Massa Empire. It is a recognized desolate place, and even the barbarians from the north are too few to come here to raid.
The small town was able to develop for a long time because of poverty.
The skyline is slowly rising, and the pure white snowflakes, randomly decorated by the strong wind, have piled up mountains of steamed buns one after another on the ground.
Gus is only fifteen years old, and after the Winter Sun Festival, he will be sixteen.
At the age of sixteen, under the light of the Holy Mage Alliance, the teenagers of the Massa Empire can simply know their own potential.
Regardless of high or low, regardless of status.
Because the discovery of a future mage would play a huge role for the empire.
But Gus didn't remember, because he never cared about these things, so he forgot about them.
Gus whispered, mumbling some unknown language.
The sky finally turned dark, and he was not late because of the strong wind. Gus tremblingly stretched out his hands to close the window, and some air leakage gaps were tightly blocked with cloth strips.
Gus was not satisfied until there was no cold wind coming in. He curled up tiredly and fell into a drowsy sleep.
Keep your spirits up tonight, and you might be able to find a job cleaning the streets tomorrow.

"squeak---"
Gus opened the window, which was the first thing Gus did every day.
"Hey, it's snowing!!!"
Gus was lying by the window, looking at the whole silvery world with fresh eyes, the joy in his eyes did not seem to be disguised.
East, until the first ray of sunlight shone on Gus's face, touching his warm face, Gus reacted suddenly, neatly took out the clothes from the pillow, and simply put them on.
It was very thin, but Gus was used to it. Being exposed to the cold all year round had made Gus extremely cold-resistant.
Yes, hardy.
The snow was so heavy that half of Gus's calf was covered in it overnight.
Accompanied by bursts of "clucking" sounds, Gus ran happily on the street, and a row of symmetrical footprints followed Gus neatly into the distance.
Perhaps because of the snow, it was already bright and there was no one on the street.
No one wanted to get out of the warm, fluffy bed in this weather, except poor little guy Gus.
Gus has a job, cleaning ossuaries.
After a person dies, the unburied corpse will be temporarily stored here to allow the soul to rest temporarily.
Gus's home is in the easternmost part of the town, and the ossuary tombs are all in the westernmost part of the city. Jiuji Continent is no exception. It is said that this is to bring the soul closer to the embrace of the gods.
Therefore, it would take Gus a long time to get there, especially on days when the road was blocked by heavy snow, and the speed was even slower.
Just halfway through the journey, Gus's steps were no longer brisk. He was breathing heavily from his mouth and nose. The cold air was inhaled into his lungs, and then turned into steam and came out of his nose. The tip of his nose was red and dripping with sweat.
Half the journey was enough to make Gus' whole body active, even though he only had a thin coat.
Among the low houses, several buildings will appear from time to time.
It is very simple and warm. The fire burning in the room warms the winter.
Gus's ideal is to one day build a house of his own on this street. As for a castle as big as Baron Peso, Gus also carefully calculated it one night and came to the conclusion that he wanted to build a house of his own. They have to work for hundreds of years without eating or drinking.
Gus was sad, but by the time he woke up again, he had forgotten about it.
"Hey, isn't this Gus? He's going to clean his bones again!! Haha."
After turning a corner, a group of teenagers looked at Gus playfully, and a few smaller teenagers casually grabbed snowballs from the ground and threw them unceremoniously, in the direction of Gus.
Gus flashed past lightly and looked at the group of teenagers who were wrapped like giant bears.
He smiled kindly, but without stopping, he simply formed a ball of snow with his hands and threw it at the leading boy.
Gus, who has been following Uncle Ross into the woods to catch birds and steal eggs since he was a child, had very good control over the snowballs and hit the leader of the boy on the head. The bearskin hat fell to the snow. The remaining white snow fell on the boy's neck, and the cold snowflakes melted, causing the boy to scream.
This boy's name is Tabor Stewart. He has disliked Gus since he was a child. When Uncle Ross was alive, he was relatively restrained.
However, this summer, Uncle Ross passed away, and Tabor showed his teenage "minions". Every time he met Gus, he always bullied him, without exception.
"Damn it, the God of Winter won't let you go."
Tabor was very strong, at least compared to Gus. He deliberately pretended to be fierce, and with his golden hair, he looked more like a bull in heat.
Gus was not afraid, but looked at the few people curiously, with doubts in his eyes. In his memory, he had some impressions of the people in Tabor, and he always felt that he had seen them somewhere.
But Gus was certain that this was his first time seeing them.
"Brother Tubot, Gus, he seems to be sick again."
Terrence tugged at the corner of Tabor's clothes and muttered softly.
The whole town knew that Gus was sick.
Erase some memories from time to time, this is Gus' serious illness. Although there is no pattern, there are two things that Gus has never forgotten.
That was everything with Uncle Ross, and the other thing was cleaning the ossuary.
Gus fought back just now because Uncle Ross's words were printed in his mind.
"Every upright person should maintain his dignity!"
Tabor looked at Gus, his eyes flashing with unknown emotions.
"This Winter Sun Festival, there will be a Holy Wizard who will give us a test in the Baron's castle. Remember to come."
Gus scratched his head as Tabor left, taking the group of followers with him.
After thinking hard, I think I am already 16 years old. According to Uncle Ross, as long as I pass the Dharma Awakening Conference, I won't have to worry about food and drink.
"In order to live, I have to go."
From a distance, Gus saw the low ossuary.
It is said to be a tomb, but in fact it is just a short, isolated hall.
He ran over happily. Gus liked this job very much. No one disturbed him here. It was very quiet and he could do all the things he liked.
As for the magical world of wizards, Gus never thought that the distance was far beyond the vision of a poor child for the future.
Even so big, Gus has never seen what they look like.
