Chapter 349: Homeless people on the streets of Kathmandu
Over the course of a day, the two set up barriers and spells throughout Kathmandu, while using Mordo's "shortcuts" to get around faster and reach key areas in the best spots to trigger protective barriers.
This goes on for a while, with Celeste being shown how to perform the spell and soon doing it herself, while Mordo never gets very far.
She walked through the crowd, her hands clasped, muttering a spell -
"Kama Taj."
Hearing the name of her new home, Celeste perked up and looked towards the source. And she wasn't the only one to hear this, because Mordo heard it too.
Not far away, they saw a ragged man walking past several pedestrians. From the looks of it, the man was asking for directions, but was unsuccessful. He handed a piece of paper to an old man, who simply shook his head and led him in another direction, hoping to help him find what he was looking for.
Curious about this stranger, both Celeste and Mordo followed him to observe him.
They watched from a distance as he moved from person to person, some of them seeming to know where to point him, while others waved him off apologetically.
What the man doesn't realize is that he's being followed by two masked men, and soon a few less unsavory ones, following him into a seemingly deserted alley.
In a split second, the stranger realized what was happening as he saw several people surrounding him in a way that trapped him on the spot.
"Look, guys, I don't have any money," he almost pleaded.
"Your watch," one of the men said, pointing to it.
The stranger's expression fell. "No, please. This is all I have left.
"Your watch," repeated another, and he stepped forward, and the others followed.
The ragged man sighed in frustration. "Okay."
In an instant, he punched the man in the face. After a moment, he held his hand and stepped back in pain.
Celeste frowned at this, wondering if the man was truly weak and "fragile" through and through, or if he had sustained an injury previously that left him in his current state.
Both the wizard and the Jedi Shadow then witnessed the ragged man being beaten by thugs, one of whom took the watch in the process.
Having had enough, Celeste moves on, with Mordo following behind her.
In a matter of seconds, the two quickly disarmed the thugs and knocked them out.
They were all easily dispatched, one or two running away when the two arrived.
The stranger saw all this and looked with wide eyes and surprised relief at Celeste, who snatched his watch from the hand of one of the muggers and held it out for him to take.
“Your watch,” Celeste said, handing the man back his prized possession.
The man looked at his clock and saw that the glass cover had a serious crack. He wondered if it would still work.
He slumped to the ground, his shaking hands clutching his watch tightly, his face wrinkled with inner pain.
"You're looking for Kamar-Taj," Mordo said. When the ragged man nodded, the wizard silently motioned for him to follow them back to headquarters.
Celeste sensed confusion and fear in the man, but there was something else too.
A weird feeling of having hope but also accepting defeat. A weird combination to be sure, and her lover is an assassin who's been brainwashed for decades, so who is she to judge.
Eventually, they returned to Kamar-Taj, and the man was still looking around.
"Really? Are you sure we're in the right place?
"Appearances can be deceiving," was Celeste's simple response.
Karl looked at the broken man and just smiled softly.
"What's your name?"
"Stephen," the ragged man said after a moment. "Stephen Strange."
The green-robed master placed a hand on his chest. "Karl Mordo. This is Celeste Morn, who recently joined our order.
Stephen Strange simply nodded politely to the Jedi.
"Many have been in your shoes, I am one of them." Mordo said. "So, can I give you some advice?" The man in front of them just nodded. "Forget everything you think you know."
Strange could only blink in confusion as Celeste opened the door and led him to Kamar-Taj.
"Okay," he said, obviously unsure of what Mordo meant, but following him inside anyway.
They walked the halls of the sanctuary, mostly in relative silence.
"Our teacher's sanctuary. The Ancient One. Modo said in a respectful tone.
"The Ancient One?" their ragged guest asked. "What's his real name?" Silence was the only response he got from them. "Yes. Forget everything I thought I knew. I'm sorry.
Celeste looked up quickly to see Master Hamill reading a book at a table. Glancing at their guest, the Jedi Shadow saw the quick expression that crossed his face.
He was surprised.
A pair of acolytes quickly took away Steven's coat, leaving him in a button-down shirt. He was momentarily startled, but quickly recovered as he was presented with a clay cup.
"Uh, thanks," Strange said.
Celeste quickly suppressed the smile on her face and poured tea into the ceramic cup as the Ancient One appeared in the room.
"Ah, thank you, Ancient One...for seeing me..." said the newcomer, who soon saw Master Hamil exit the room.
"You're welcome," the Celtic woman said before addressing the others in the room. "Thank you, Master Hamir. Thank you, Master Mordo. Thank you, Celeste. That's all.
Stephen could only watch in confusion, but also slightly embarrassed as he realized his misfortune.
After a while, the Ancient One was left alone, though Mordo and Celeste stood by, waiting on the wing.
"Mr. Stephen Strange." Ancient One greeted him.
“Uh…actually, it’s a doctor.
"Well, no, not now, of course." The Ancient One pointed out. "Isn't that why you're here?"
Doctor Strange removed his lips from the clay cup and stared at the bald Celtic woman before him.
“You went through a lot of procedures. Right?
"...Yes," he said awkwardly, then tried to divert attention. "It's good tea."
Furuichi walked away so she could pour herself some tea.
Strange looked between Celeste and Mordo, silently asking what was going on, but the latter gave him a small smirk.
"Did you cure a man called Pangborn? A paralyzed man. Strange asked after a moment.
Mordo's face lit up with recognition when he heard the name after all this time. Celeste noticed.
"To some extent." Ancient One said casually.
"You helped him to be able to walk."
"Yes."
