Marvel crosses Star Wars, and everyone attacks the galaxy
Chapter 229 Shameless Palpatine
The trip back to the Senate building was much easier than expected. With the Avengers keeping the Duchess in their protective hands, she was not manhandled when she was brought in for "questioning."
That's not the case with Bo-Katan.
As soon as the Duchess's sister came into view, the Republican Guards led her in. Unlike her comrades, she offered no resistance.
The Death Watch members did not want to give up information about their organization, forcing them to quickly resist in their own ways. For most of them, they used poison pills hidden in their mouths and died not long after. The last one almost committed suicide, but Cap quickly knocked the man out.
Nonetheless, the group hurried to Palpatine's office to display a legal holographic message instead of the one displayed earlier in the day. There was no time to call an emergency meeting, as they hoped Palpatine would overturn the Senate's decision to occupy Mandalore.
Captain Rogers, Natasha, Murdock, Kenobi, Sadine, and Padme all stood in silence, watching the actual message from Vice Minister Jerek before Palpatine and Mas Amedda.
"Our government's actions have brought us into a period of civil war. To admit this is to invite panic in the streets. The Death Watch is far more powerful than we ever imagined. But we have been training for this. We can stop them. However, if we are to fight them effectively, we must have the courage to stand firm in the name of peace. If we are to do so, we must refuse any Republic assistance. This government will act instead. It will act not out of pride, but for safety. Republic intervention will infuriate the opposition. That is why our government refuses the help of the Jedi. We must listen to the Duchess of Sardin. If we do not, it will ultimately lead to our downfall.
When the message ended, silence filled Palpatine's room and he looked at the man before him.
Padme said with a hint of victory in her tone. "This is enough to prove that the information has been tampered with and forged in an attempt to challenge and undermine Sardin's rule."
Standing behind them, the Avengers along with Obi-Wan and Sadine watched as Palpatine maintained a stoic expression for a moment. He did not respond at first.
"It does change a lot of what we've been shown before. Palpatine admitted out loud that when...
"But the decision has been made and it stands. Palpatine said with finality. "The Republic will occupy Mandalore."
Both Sadine and Padmé were startled by this statement, and Obi-Wan looked at the former with concern. The three Avengers stood in silence, simply watching as the exchange became more heated.
“But you can’t! What do you see?” the Mandalorian said.
"Duchess Sardin, you have forgotten a crucial detail, and honestly, it does not alleviate my concern for you," Palpatine said, staring at Sardin firmly. "While I appreciate and truly appreciate that we have such staunch supporters of peace and democracy like you, you fail to realize the seriousness of the matter. There are three Mandalorian factions within your organization; one of which has the support of the Separatists. Another has openly stated their position, and if they are truly anything like the ancient Mandalorians that once plagued the galaxy, they may prove to be a greater danger.
“But they don’t represent all of us,” Sartin retorted fiercely. “You saw the full message that Jerek recorded, and you know we were prepared for this.
"Is it?" Palpatine shot back sharply. "It's one thing to prepare for a rogue, splintering faction, but what about the other? One of them has sent messages directly to everyone here, while another has tried to kill you multiple times. Don't forget, we know that only your planet of Mandalore is allied with the Republic. Concordia was shown to be harboring Death Watch right under your nose, and your capital was attacked during a visit from Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. While you can refute these things, this is not something that can be easily reversed.
"Yes, because you make decisions behind my back every chance you get, instead of standing up for the principles you falsely represent, it seems." Satine said with a sarcastic look on her face, leaning against the table.
Palpatine sighed in exasperation and gave her a sympathetic look. "I'm sorry, Duchess, but this is truly out of my control right now."
"What do you mean?" Satine asked, clenching her fists.
Mas Almeda spoke on Palpatine's behalf. "Because of your previous dramatic behavior, you have been labeled a 'fugitive'; an odd choice for someone who fought for peace.
“But I’m not,” Satine defended the Mandalorian. “My friend was shot, and then—”
“The majority of the Senate doesn’t see it that way, and that’s okay, because the fleet is already on its way to Mandalore to deal with you…all to stop you from sabotaging the mission at hand.
A hint of anger appeared on Sadine's face. She stared at Mars, then at Palpatine.
“You have no idea what you’re doing. This will only drag Mandalore into a war. We’ve been recovering from war for decades,” Satine said, lightly pounding her fist on the table for emphasis.
“That’s what the occupation is about, and our purpose is the same,” Mas Almeida said cheekily, as if it were the most obvious thing.
"Then I hope you realize that once occupation comes, the death of innocents will be in your hands and at your choice." Satine snorted. "Though I'm sure that won't bother you too much considering the war you failed to prevent."
Satine turned around, a look of barely suppressed anger on her face. Padmé remained where she was, standing with the Supreme Chancellor, only giving her Naboo Senator an apologetic look.
Kenobi followed the Duchess, with the three Avengers following behind them.
"What do you think of him?" Steve asked quietly.
"He looks too much like Pierce," Natasha said, frowning.
"You think so, too?"
"Pierce..." Matt said loudly. "If I remember correctly, isn't that the head of SHIELD?"
"Yeah, until it was revealed that he was actually the head of Hydra."
“I remember hearing about this on the news last year,” Matt said. “A plotter, parading as a righteous man.”
"Sound familiar?" Natasha said. "While HYDRA hasn't made a public appearance in decades, they are manipulating events on Earth so that one day they can take over. Even planting their agents within SHIELD to make it happen as smoothly as possible.
“Luckily for us, they weren’t able to work with some of us,” the American said.
"So, Captain, what do you think about all this?" Daredevil asked. Steve was silent for a moment. "What should we do?"
Steve's eyes went to the Duchess and the Jedi who were deep in conversation.
"We need to take our time here," Steve said in a non-argumentative tone. "Our main goal is to find our missing friends and get home first. We're still new to the whole Republic situation.
"Better be careful then," Matt said at the nods of Natasha and Steve.
