Chapter 10 Red Flags

"What about the other child?" I asked anxiously, "Where is she now?" The old housekeeper shook his head, a trace of sadness flashed in his turbid eyes, "I don't know. That year, the lady left the Li family with the sick child and never came back."

The old housekeeper's story confirmed my guess and revealed part of the truth about my life. But I was even more confused. If I was really not the daughter of the Li family, who were my biological parents? Why did they abandon me? Zhong Yuxuan and I walked out of the hospital without saying a word, but I knew that we were both digesting the shock of this sudden truth.

On the way home, I felt an inexplicable uneasiness, as if a pair of eyes were watching us from the dark. I subconsciously held onto Zhong Yuxuan's arm, and he sensed my uneasiness, turned his head, and gave me a reassuring look.

However, at that moment, the shrill sound of brakes broke the originally peaceful street. A black car suddenly rushed out from the fork in the road and crashed straight into our car. Everything happened too fast, and before I could react, I was thrown out by a huge impact.

When I regained consciousness, I found myself lying on a hospital bed. Zhong Yuxuan was sitting beside the bed, his face full of worry and self-blame. "How are you? Are you feeling unwell?" He held my hand, his voice low and hoarse. I shook my head. Apart from feeling a little dizzy, there was nothing wrong with me.

"We are fine, just minor scratches." Zhong Yuxuan seemed relieved, but his face was still solemn. "I have called the police, and the police will investigate the cause of the accident."

Although the doctor said that we were only slightly injured, this sudden car accident made Zhong Yuxuan and I realize that someone wanted to stop us from investigating the truth, and they were willing to use such dangerous means.

When Zhong Shuhao learned that we had been in a car accident, he rushed to the hospital immediately. He looked at us with a frown, his eyes full of worry and anxiety. "I'm glad you're all right, I'm glad you're all right..." He muttered to himself, with a hint of fear in his tone.

"Yuxuan, Luoxue, this matter may not be that simple." Zhong Shuhao said in a serious tone, "I will send someone to protect your safety, but you also have to promise me not to act rashly in the near future."

Zhong Yuxuan wanted to say something, but was stopped by Zhong Shuhao's eyes. "I know you want to find out the truth, but now is not the time. The other party's power cannot be underestimated. We must act cautiously."

Zhong Shuhao's words undoubtedly sounded the alarm for us. I know that the road ahead will be more difficult and dangerous, but I will not give up. I must find out the mystery of my life experience and protect the safety of myself and Zhong Yuxuan. Dad's words made Zhong Yuxuan and I silent. We understand his concerns and know how complicated the current situation is. However, I really don't want to just leave it alone.

What made me even more uneasy was that after the car accident, the Li family's attitude towards me had subtly changed. The servants looked at me more evasively and talked more about me. And all this started when Li Luoyao came to visit me in the hospital.

"Sister, this is so terrible. Fortunately, you and your brother-in-law are fine." Li Luoyao sat by the bed, looking worried, but her eyes made me feel uncomfortable, as if she was watching a good show. "The doctor said that you were just a little frightened, and you should be able to recover soon, right? The company's affairs cannot be delayed for too long."

I knew that she was testing me, testing my position in the Zhong family, testing whether I would lose Zhong Yuxuan's favor because of this car accident. I ignored her hint and just responded lightly.

However, Li Luoyao did not intend to give up. She began to spread all kinds of rumors in the Li family, saying that I had a hard life, and that I brought bad luck to my father and mother, and now I almost killed Zhong Yuxuan, saying that I was an absolute disaster star and brought bad luck to the family.

At first, I just thought it was her nonsense, but gradually, I found that the atmosphere at home had really changed. The servants became more and more indifferent to me, and even deliberately alienated me. Even my grandmother, who always loved me, began to persuade me, intentionally or unintentionally, to go to the temple more often to burn incense and pray for peace.

I knew in my heart that Li Luoyao was behind all this. She wanted to use this opportunity to drive me out of the Li family and make me lose all my support.

Just when I felt isolated and helpless, my good friend Qin Xue gave me a glimmer of hope. She accidentally saw Li Luoyao's mobile phone and found a suspicious call record.

"The other party is an unfamiliar number, but Luo Yao addressed him as 'Sir'." Qin Xue lowered her voice, her expression solemn, "Also, I found that they also talked on the phone a few days before you had the car accident."

My heart sank. Could it be that Li Luoyao was involved in this car accident? Could it be that the mastermind behind this was the "Mr." she mentioned?

Qin Xue's words gave me chills, and a terrible guess slowly formed in my mind. Could it be that Li Luoyao was really related to the car accident? Who was the "Mr." she was talking about? All of this was like a fog that made me lose my direction.

Zhong Yuxuan held my hand, his eyes firm: "Don't be afraid, I will find out everything."

I nodded. Now I had no choice but to believe him.

We decided to start with Li Luoyao and investigate her background and recent activities, hoping to find more clues. Zhong Yuxuan used his connections and quickly found the registration information of the strange number, but found that it was just a shell company.

The clue ends here? I felt powerless. Are we really going to be kept in the dark?

"Don't lose heart, there must be other clues." Zhong Yuxuan comforted me. He thought for a moment and then said, "Do you know Li Luoyao's recent whereabouts?"

I tried hard to recall that Li Luoyao had rarely gone out and had been staying at home since the last time she came to visit me in the hospital.

"She seldom goes out. She stays in her room most of the time, and occasionally goes to the study." I said, and suddenly an idea flashed in my mind, "Study! Could it be..."

The study room in the Li family's old house has always been a forbidden area. Only the head of the family and permitted persons can enter. However, Li Luoyao has been going in and out of the study room frequently recently, which in itself is not unusual.

We decided to take a chance. In the dead of night, I sneaked into the study, while Zhong Yuxuan stood outside to watch. The light in the study was dim, and the bookshelves were filled with various ancient books and documents. I carefully searched through them, hoping to find some clues.

Suddenly, my hand touched a safe hidden behind the bookshelf. I was delighted. Could this be what we want?

I tried to open the safe, but found that I needed a password. I was extremely anxious, and then Zhong Yuxuan came in and handed me a note: "This is what I found in Li Luoyao's room, maybe it's the password."

I took the note with a string of numbers written on it. I entered the password with trembling hands and the safe opened.

I couldn't wait to open the safe, which contained several documents and a USB drive. I picked up the documents and started flipping through them, my face becoming increasingly grim.

These documents record a business scandal that happened to the Li family many years ago, and this scandal seems to be related to my life experience...

Just as we were about to hand these documents to Zhong Shuhao, hoping that he could find out the truth, the study door was suddenly pushed open.

"What are you doing!" Li Luoyao stood at the door, his face ashen and his eyes full of ferocity.

My heart sank instantly. It seemed that what we found had really touched her bottom line. Li Luoyao's appearance was completely beyond my expectations. I didn't even have time to think. My body's instinctive reaction had already made a choice. I hurriedly stuffed the file into Zhong Yuxuan's arms and lowered my voice: "Go!"

Zhong Yuxuan obviously also realized the danger. He grabbed my hand and turned to leave from another exit of the study. However, it was too late.

"Want to leave? Not that easy!" Li Luoyao roared, and pounced on me, trying to snatch the documents from Zhong Yuxuan's hand. I was startled by her sudden move, staggered, and almost fell.

"Luo Xue!" Zhong Yuxuan exclaimed, and hurriedly supported me, but the documents were scattered all over the floor. Li Luoyao saw this, and a hint of ruthlessness flashed in her eyes. She rushed towards the documents desperately, as if she wanted to tear them all into pieces.

"We can't let her succeed!" I was so anxious that I didn't care about being afraid. I struggled to break free from Zhong Yuxuan's support and rushed towards Li Luoyao. We wrestled with each other and neither of us was willing to let go.

The study was in chaos, with documents scattered everywhere. Zhong Yuxuan was anxious to separate us, but he obviously couldn't control me and Li Luoyao at the same time.

"That's enough! What are you doing?!"

Suddenly, a majestic voice sounded at the door. I was stunned for a moment, looked up, and saw Zhong Shuhao standing at the door of the study, looking at us with a sullen face.

His appearance made Li Luoyao stop what she was doing. I took the opportunity to snatch a few documents from her and held them tightly in my hands.

"Dad, listen to my explanation. It was Li Luoxue, it was her..." Li Luoyao wanted to explain in panic, but was stopped by Zhong Shuhao's sharp eyes.

"I saw it with my own eyes, what else do I need you to explain?" Zhong Shuhao said coldly, his eyes swept across the scattered documents on the ground, and finally landed on the ones in my hands, "Give me the things."

I hesitated for a moment, but finally handed the document to Zhong Shuhao. He took the document and read it carefully, his expression becoming increasingly grim.

"Is this all true?" Zhong Shuhao's voice was low and terrifying, and I could feel his suppressed anger.

I bit my lip and said nothing, but my silence gave him the answer.

"Li Luoyao, do you have anything else to say?" Zhong Shuhao turned to look at Li Luoyao with a cold tone.

Li Luoyao's face was pale, her lips were trembling, but she couldn't speak.

"Someone, lock her up!" Zhong Shuhao roared, and then several servants rushed in and took Li Luoyao away by force.

Li Luoyao's cries gradually faded away, and the study returned to calm, but there was a suffocating and oppressive atmosphere. I stood there, my hands and feet were cold, not knowing what would happen next.

"Luo Xue, you go back and rest first. I will handle this matter." Zhong Yuxuan walked to my side, held my hand gently, and spoke in a gentle tone.

I nodded and followed him out of the study. However, just as we were about to leave the study, I suddenly felt a sharp pain from the back of my head, my eyes went dark, and I lost consciousness.

When I woke up again, I was already lying on a hospital bed. I struggled to sit up, but I felt dizzy.

"Luo Xue, you're awake!" Zhong Yuxuan's anxious voice sounded in my ears. He helped me lie down, "How do you feel? Are you feeling uncomfortable anywhere?"

I shook my head and tried hard to recall what happened before I fell into a coma, but found that my mind was blank.

"What's wrong with me? Why am I here?"

"Don't worry, the doctor said you just have a mild concussion and you'll be fine after a few days of rest." Zhong Yuxuan comforted me, "I...I bumped into you by accident."

I looked at him in confusion, feeling that something was wrong, but I couldn't remember what it was for a moment.

Just then, the door of the ward was suddenly pushed open, and a nurse walked in with a package in her hand.

"Excuse me, who is Mr. Zhong Yuxuan?"

Zhong Yuxuan took the package and frowned slightly: "I am, what is this?"

"I'm not sure. A gentleman brought it to you and said he must hand it to you personally." After the nurse said that, she turned and left.

Zhong Yuxuan opened the package and his expression instantly turned ugly. I curiously leaned over and saw a photo and a letter in the package.

The photo showed a little girl with pigtails and a bright smile. I vaguely saw what I looked like when I was a child. The letter was a threatening letter with only one sentence:

"Stop investigating, otherwise, she will never wake up."

The pungent smell of disinfectant filled my nose. I tried to open my heavy eyelids. The white ceiling came into view. The unfamiliar environment made me feel uneasy. Where was I? What happened?

"Luo Xue, you're awake!" Zhong Yuxuan's voice was a little hoarse, and one could hear the fatigue and worry that he could not hide.

"What's wrong with me?" I struggled to sit up, but felt a splitting headache.

"You've been in a coma for a whole day and night. The doctor said you just had a mild concussion and you'll be fine after a few days of rest." Zhong Yuxuan helped me lie down, his eyes full of heartache.

Coma? I tried to recall everything that happened before I fell into a coma: the study, the files, Li Luoyao, Zhong Shuhao, and... I suddenly remembered the severe pain before I fell into a coma. Did someone attack me?

"Why did I faint? Did...did someone attack me?" My voice trembled a little and my heart was filled with fear.

Zhong Yuxuan's expression changed slightly. He avoided my gaze and said vaguely, "The doctor said that you fainted because you were too excited and exhausted. Don't let your mind wander and have a good rest."

His explanation was too weak to dispel my doubts, but I didn't ask any further questions because I knew he wouldn't tell me the truth even if I did.

Just then, a nurse came in with a package in her hand: "Excuse me, who is Mr. Zhong Yuxuan?"

"It's me." Zhong Yuxuan took the package with a frown.

"It was brought by a gentleman, who said he must hand it to you personally." The nurse said and turned and left.

Zhong Yuxuan opened the package, and a photo and a letter suddenly appeared in front of him. My eyes were also attracted to them. The photo showed a little girl with pigtails and a bright smile. That was me!

Before I could open my mouth to ask, Zhong Yuxuan's face suddenly changed. He stood up abruptly and crumpled the letter into a ball. His knuckles turned bluish-white from excessive force.

My heart tightened, and I reached out to take the letter. There was only one sentence on the letter:

My breath was choked, and a chill instantly ran up from the soles of my feet to my heart. This letter and this photo are both naked warnings to us!

"Who is it? Who sent it?" My voice trembled and countless terrible thoughts flashed through my mind.

Zhong Yuxuan didn't answer, he just held my hand tightly, his eyes full of self-blame and anger. I could feel the warmth of his palm and the tremendous rage he was suppressing at the moment.

I knew that this time, we were really in big trouble.
