Chapter 19 Geraldine Lightning
Klein hesitated for a moment, but still followed Leonard into the room.
As soon as he passed through the iron gate, the warm yellow afternoon sun leaped through the bright window and splashed onto Klein's face with a smile.
Even under such harsh conditions, the Earth Church still tried its best to get the best sunlight for the patients. The light fragrance of carnations, cornflowers, white lilies, accompanied by the light yellow curtains, floated gently in the not-so-spacious ward.
"My doctor says flowers are good for your mood - and the nurses say he's the director of this hospital!"
Geraldine smiled heartily, not being shy with Klein, a stranger. She sat cross-legged on the bed wrapped in a blanket, with only her head sticking out. On her round head was a head of short, fiery red hair with a little natural curl, which was carefully combed and neatly tilted in one direction. Her big eyes with upturned corners rolled around, curiously and enthusiastically looking up and down at this strange and peculiar magician, just like a fire fox curled up in a cave and looking around.
"Geraldine Lightning, a reporter for The Moon." Leonard stretched out his hands to both sides. "Miracle magician, Merlin Hermes."
Facing his colleague, Leonard's words suddenly became brief and cold. He returned to the cold and serious detective mode when they first met. Klein found that the detective Leonard who was in his professional state seemed to be like this all the time, cold, sharp, efficient, even a little unkind, lacking too much worldly touch. It was really different from the impression of Leonard who became carefree when he had free time in the Fifth Epoch Professional Team. Such a Leonard would inevitably make normal people a little discouraged.
Is he intentionally imitating his state before being [reset] and awakened?
Geraldine, who can be called a non-staff assistant by Leonard, is obviously not an ordinary person. This sunny psychiatric bed is the best proof of this.
"Hey, sir! I know what you're thinking!" Geraldine pouted in dissatisfaction, "I'm not locked up here because of schizophrenia or manic delusions. I just have some psychological trauma and need the love and comfort of doctors and nurses!"
...I think you are the person with the least psychological trauma in this room!
"How do you know what I'm thinking?" Klein became interested.
"Everyone thinks so!" Geraldine smiled slyly and gave Klein a charming look.
However, this is a closed psychiatric department, and only medical staff with passes and identity cards can come in. Apart from the two of them, no other visitors will come in.
Klein began to understand why this reporter was able to get so close to the cold Detective Leonard. This overly lively reporter had simply kicked down all social barriers with a shameless stride, and with her shameless spirit, she was able to step into the small world of autistic children all over the world.
Of course, to gain the favor of the cold-blooded detective Leonard, it takes more than just high school-level shamelessness.
Klein kept a calm smile on his face as he secretly observed the woman wrapped in a blanket. She also draped a fiery red shawl over her shoulders, which made her look even more like a red-haired fox.
Geraldine happily and loudly talked to Leonard, and from time to time she blinked and cast a probing look at the silent and smiling strange magician. But after just a few words, the reporter guessed Klein's mental complaint. Strong observation and extraordinary reasoning ability, this is the fundamental reason why Detective Leonard values Geraldine.
This is a very useful assistant.
"No visitors came in, but there were medical staff who came to see me! The first thing they said was that they were curious about why someone like me needed psychiatric treatment." Geraldine had a good grasp of this kind of curiosity and even curiosity. She blinked her big fox eyes and explained to Klein, "Even if I can't guess it, after so many interrogations, I should have a conditioned reflex."
"Work."
Leonard's brief words interrupted the meaningless conversation. His tone was neither sad nor happy, and it was hard to tell whether he was impatient with the nonsense or eager to finish get off work as soon as possible.
Leonard pulled another bulging folder out of his bag and handed it to Geraldine.
"Good news and bad news. The good news is that based on your outstanding performance and great contribution in this kidnapping case, the National Police Agency has decided to award you a third-class merit. Here are the relevant documents."
Geraldine's eyes lit up, and she quickly snatched the bag, happily taking out a shiny badge and a stack of documents. A red check stood out among the pile of papers.
"Your hospitalization expenses this time are considered work-related injuries, and the police department has reimbursed you, as well as the third-class merit bonus. I hope you can take this opportunity to treat your post-war psychological syndrome."
"It's post-traumatic stress syndrome!"
Geraldine did not even raise her head. She looked at the medal cheerfully from left to right, then drew her hand back under the quilt, as if she could not wait to pin it on.
"After the war?" Klein caught a key word. "Have you ever been on the battlefield?"
"Of course! I used to be a war correspondent!"
Speaking of her glorious history, Geraldine's face was full of pride. As she spoke, she threw the quilt, pulled her shawl, crawled to the bed with her hands and feet, and opened her hospital gown to both sides like an exhibitionist.
Klein was totally unprepared, and before he could close his eyes, several golden medals came into view.
Geraldine shook the left side of her dress with pride. Two beautifully crafted star medals shone on the fabric, one of which was particularly dazzling.
"This is the medal I received in the army! There's also a first-class individual merit medal in it!"
Then she shook the clothes on her right side, including the one that had just arrived today, and the three medals swayed on her clothes.
"This is the medal I got from the Police Department!"
Klein felt extremely complicated. Clearly, a glorious veteran was reminiscing about his glorious past, but Klein felt that the scene before him was more like a pervert looking through his carefully collected original women's underwear - or maybe men's.
He turned to look at Leonard. The experienced detective looked calm. Klein believed that the boy must be trying to hold back his laughter, and it was all within his expectations.
But what puzzled Klein even more was how such a high honor could be awarded to an ordinary war correspondent? There was even an individual first-class merit!
In Klein's impression of several lifetimes, those who could receive the first-class medal of honor were mostly those who survived a situation where they were doomed to die. Most of these people were either injured or disabled. It was rare to hear of someone as lively as Geraldine, not to mention that she was not a war correspondent in a frontal combat unit.
The first-class medal of honor is more of a consolation to the victims than a glory to the survivors - martyrs cannot be awarded honors, and their recognition can only be expressed through commendations to the living.
How outrageous was the situation for this female reporter to receive a first-class medal of honor!
"I can see you want to hear a story!"
Seeing Klein staring at the medal without saying anything, Geraldine narrowed her eyes and leaned forward, which made her look more like a fox with shifty eyes. After getting affirmation from Klein's eyes, Geraldine leaned back and shook her hospital gown covered with glory.
"Come on! What a reporter needs most is stories. Hey, what do you want to hear?"
"Want to know what kind of legend is behind Miss Lightning's first-class medal of honor?"
Klein pointed, but Geraldine twisted away from his finger.
"Hey, I can't tell you this, it's top secret! Let's change it!"
"Well, I want to hear about the latest third-class merit award from the Police Department."
"The kidnapping?"
Leonard stepped forward. When he mentioned the kidnapping case, his originally calm tone seemed to become a little strange.
"Geraldine, with her identity as a journalist, provided a lot of clues for solving the case and directly helped us find the location of the hostages."
Klein raised his eyebrows. This didn't sound like it was worthy of a third-class merit.
"Then she blew up the door to the den."
