Chapter 373: A Little Science - Ming Dynasty Confinement Room

Old rule - haven't watched it.

Ps:

I have a few words from the bottom of my heart - those who read the article right after it is written and posted on Gua at 6 o'clock every morning, please take care of your health. Staying up late is really harmful!!!

It may not be obvious when you are young, but once you get older, it will really backfire!!!

I have been feeling unwell due to my reversed day and night routine for half a year, so today I saw my third Chinese doctor.

The old Chinese doctor said that there is a high possibility of cerebral infarction, which is almost enough to scare a melon to death.

But the symptoms are all there: stiff neck, dizziness, and migraines.

My dears, if you can avoid staying up late, don’t do it!!!

Finally I understand why writers die suddenly! ! ! !

About the confinement rooms used by concubines in the Ming Dynasty.

The Ming Dynasty's harem system was specifically regulated by Emperor Taizu Zhu Yuanzhang in the early Ming Dynasty.

The six bureaus and one department are in charge of the entire harem, including the Shanggong Bureau, Shangyi Bureau, Shangfu Bureau, Shangshi Bureau, Shangqin Bureau, Shanggong Bureau, and Gongzheng Bureau.

Above the six bureaus and one department is the Silijian, which was originally a semi-parallel organization and they could be deployed to each other when something happened.

Later, due to the rise of eunuchs and the decline of female officials, the six bureaus and one department became departments managed by the Silijian.

The very important confinement room, strictly speaking, does not belong to any of the six bureaus and one department.

It is just a temporary institution in case a concubine in the harem becomes pregnant.

The main personnel of the agency were temporarily transferred from various departments according to the production needs of the concubines.

However, when there were many concubines in the harem, confinement rooms became permanent institutions.

So the confinement room is actually organized and coordinated by several departments.

They are roughly the Imperial Medical Service, the Imperial Pharmacy, the Imperial Food Bureau, and the Ceremonial Office. The superiors of these four departments are the Ministry of Rites and the Imperial Household Department.

The Ming Dynasty system stipulated:

If a concubine is pregnant, the situation must be verified first, and then the year, month and day must be registered by the relevant department.

After checking the records that the emperor had indeed visited her and ensuring that she was of royal blood.

The officials then told the emperor, and the emperor arranged for someone to be responsible for the concubine's delivery. The specific matters were planned by the Imperial Household Department and the Ministry of Rites.

The staff of the confinement room is recruited by the Imperial Household Department.

For example, "Three Mothers" and "All Mothers".

The so-called "three women" refer to: doctors, midwives, and wet nurses.

Female doctors, also known as medical women, were women who were proficient in medicine and were selected from all over the country and summoned to the palace to treat concubines. The women were honored to be selected.

The midwife is what we often call a "midwife". She must be a midwife with many years of delivery experience to ensure the smooth delivery of the baby.

As for the nanny, there is no need to say much. She is what we often call "wet nurse".

The Ming Dynasty also set up a special department to supply wet nurses to the palace - the "Naizi Mansion", located north of Dong'anmen.

The requirements for a nanny are very specific and comprehensive.

Seasonal Wet-Haired ...

In addition, eighty substitute nurses will be selected. They only need to leave their home addresses and can live in their own homes. They are called "Dianmao nurses."

The women must be aged between 15 and 20, have both sons and daughters, and be of decent appearance. Only those who have given birth to their third child within three months can be selected. They must also be examined by a midwife to be free of hidden diseases before they can serve in the palace.

Use the nipple of a girl to give birth to a prince, and use the nipple of a boy to give birth to a princess, so that the baby can grow up healthily and avoid premature death

When a season has passed and there are no newborns in the palace, the wet nurses can go home, and the wet nurses' office will select a new group of "wet nurses" to be on standby to ensure that the palace is supplied with women in the best lactation period.

Most of the wet nurses came from Daxing and Wanping counties in the capital, and a small number were selected by local government offices.

Then, the most important point is that in the early days, the wet nursery was under the management of the Jinyiwei, which was directly under the emperor. They could conduct preliminary screenings of wet nurses, and the Silijian in the palace would make the final decision on the staffing of the confinement room.

In the later period, the Jinyiwei was replaced by the Dongchang, and the eunuchs rose to power.

The confinement room is usually set up in the most remote and quiet place in the palace, a bit like the "cold palace" that we often see in TV dramas. The original intention is to allow mothers to stay away from the hustle and bustle and give birth quietly.

However, this is often the time when the mother and the baby are most vulnerable and most susceptible to harm.

Because of its remote location, if a difficult birth is caused, a slight delay could result in two deaths.

Anyway, there were only a lot of founding emperors in the entire Ming Dynasty, but the rest died out very quickly.
