Li Xueyue knew that this was a battle that was doomed to fail. She was accompanied by only 20 well-trained soldiers at most.

No one expected they would be attacked on this route as they avoided the main roads where robberies were common.

She looked around uncertainly. Everywhere she looked, she saw robbers.

"Mount your horses, ma'am," one soldier said, and the soldiers began to slowly retreat. They took a defensive stance, surrounding the middle carriage.

The soldiers were careful to conceal her title. If the robbers discovered that she was a princess, everything would break out in the form of kidnapping.

"What beautiful women you have there," one of the burly men commented. "Oh, look at that cold look. Women like that scream the loudest in bed."

The robbers burst into vulgar laughter. The mocking voices echoed throughout the forest.

Li Xueyue's stomach churned with an unpleasant feeling. Her lips curved into a snarl of disgust. She touched her waist, thankful for the dagger hanging from her hip. She wished it was a sword, like the ones the soldiers carried. She had forgotten it in the carriage.

"If you follow us obediently, we will spare you and make them run back with their tails between their legs." A robber sneered.

Li Xueyue narrowed her eyes. She reached for the knife on her hip, which caused another burst of morbid laughter.

"We already have the answer," said another robber.

"Catch them," the first thief demanded.

And just like that, a bloody battle broke out.

Li Xueyue seriously underestimated the number of people in the forest. She was confident that these well-trained palace soldiers could kill at least two or three people on their own. Who would have thought that this place was already crowded with people?

I don't know who did it, but someone grabbed her waist and forcibly lifted her onto the horse. "What do you do-"

"I'm sorry, ma'am," the soldier whispered. He looked up, his eyes pleading. "Please stay safe."

Li Xueyue blinked in confusion. "What nonsense are you talking about? I want to fight!" She gasped as the soldier slapped Heiyue's hind legs roughly. The horse raised its front legs excitedly.

“Black Moon, no!” Black Moon cried out as she leaned forward. There were men blocking her way. The soldiers clashed with the bandits, and a fierce fight ensued.

Li Xueyue had to take action, otherwise Heiyue would go straight into battle. He would get himself hurt in the process. In desperation, she loosened the reins, raised her lower body, and signaled Heiyue to jump down.

The nearby bandits were startled as a shadow fell over them. They looked up and to their shock saw a huge horse leaping above their heads.

"Catch her!" a voice demanded. "She'll fetch a high price!"

Black Moon didn't give them a chance. The moment his hooves touched the ground, he rushed forward madly. He seemed to have understood the seriousness of the matter.

The terrain slowed him down, but when his keen ears picked up approaching footsteps, he quickened his pace.

“I’m sorry…” Li Xueyue closed her eyes and whispered, unable to bear the sight of her own soldiers being brutally slaughtered. For the first time in the whole journey, she shed tears.

Li Xueyue cried for the lives lost in order to ensure her own safety. This was the only thing she could do for them.

"This must be the town the servants mentioned." Li Xueyue said softly after Heiyue ran out of the forest. Not far away, she noticed a small town. She passed a small sign with the name of the town written on it: Prosperous Village.

Li Xueyue was very optimistic about this place. With such a cute little name, what could go wrong? As it turned out, everything could go wrong.

As she rode through the village, her heart was filled with fear.

There was no one in sight. The dark, empty eye followed her wherever she went. It haunted her and the horse.

Li Xueyue had a bad feeling about the town. It looked unsafe, but night was coming soon and she needed a place to sleep. She looked around and saw poverty everywhere.

"Oh, honey," she whispered.

Even the children didn't have the energy to run around. They sat outside the creaking door, their eyes hungry. Her heart skipped a beat when she made eye contact with one of them. In his hands was a small stick with a sharpened tip that could serve as a makeshift weapon.

As she looked around, more and more women came out of their houses, looking at her with hungry eyes, as if she were a piece of meat.

Li Xueyue then understood why there were no men here. The men were all deep in the forest. They worked hard like bandits.

Li Xueyue quickly leaned forward.

"Let's go," she said.

Black Moon started to jog, and in just a few seconds, he had reached a sufficient speed. The hungry townspeople shouted in protest, their cheeks sunken and their bodies emaciated.

"Quickly!" Li Xueyue ordered, and Black Moon's hooves thundered on the ground. Its force was enough to shake the thin roof.

She gasped as she saw the little kids rushing over to her, trying to stop her from escaping.

"Jump!" Li Xueyue exclaimed to Heiyue, and sure enough, the horse jumped over the children.

Despite their glares, she glanced back to make sure none of them had been hurt in the process. To her relief, none of them seemed perturbed.

Although Black Moon was as fast as lightning, people still chased her.

"How horrible..." she whispered.

Li Xueyue had never felt such an emotion before. It was fear, mixed with pity and anger.

Their men had killed her soldiers and were probably attacking her wagons. Wasn't that enough? Was it so bad that they needed to hunt her down to steal the rest of the profits?

Li Xueyue gritted her teeth and urged Black Moon forward. She never looked back, not even once. She didn't want others to remember the children's thinning hair, sunken cheeks, and mothers with screaming babies but no milk to feed them.

Finally, when she entered another forest, Black Moon slowed down.

"Is that town really Han Jian's territory?" she asked herself as she rode forward.

Li Xueyue swallowed. She had heard snippets of the soldiers' conversion before the whole thing happened. She had gathered enough to know that they were close to the beginning of Hanjian's territory, bordering the end of the Wuyi Barrier.

"There must be many towns like this." Li Xueyue whispered. "Is this deserted village caused by frequent wars...?"

Thinking of this, Li Xueyue shuddered. Her assumption must be correct. Otherwise, how could the wealthy Hanjiang Village be so poor?

Li Xueyue had always heard about the consequences of war. Lives lost, mothers never seeing their sons again, husbands separated from their wives, children without parents, towns looted, homes abandoned.

On paper, the consequences seemed serious, but after experiencing it in person... she couldn't describe it in words.

Li Xueyue vowed that she would do her best to prevent any possible war from breaking out. Looking back in the direction of the village, she had already decided on the first impact she would have on Han Jian.
