After a comfortable silence, Yu Zhen finally spoke again. "I want to ask your parents for their blessing."

Li Xueyue blinked in shock and stepped back with a confused look on her face. "Blessings? Like getting married?"

"Yes." He nodded.

"Do not."

“What? Why not?” Yu Zhen frowned and asked in disbelief. He looked down at her and was suddenly troubled by the irritation that welled up in her eyes.

“I think we’re moving too fast.”

"You think?" he scoffed. "I know we are."

"If you know we're going too fast, why are you in such a hurry?"

"Because I can't bear to be separated from you."

"Yu Zhen——"

"Fuck the time test." Yu Zhen gritted his teeth, lowered his hands, grabbed her face, and pulled her closer. "I want you, Li Xueyue, all of you."

"Yu Zhen——"

"I will give you everything I have, will you do the same in return?"

"I..." She trailed off as she licked her lower lip nervously.

Yu Zhen's eyes instantly fell on her irresistible lips. After a second he forced himself to look away.

"I just think we rushed it."

"If only we were."

"This isn't nice," she deadpanned. "You haven't even established what we are, and now you're throwing your plans at me. It's not fair, and… maybe I'm to blame too, because I gave in so quickly."

Yu Zhen's mind flashed back to their first kiss in the hallway this morning. He clenched his teeth, his jaw tensed. No, she wasn't to blame. He was. He had taken advantage of her. He was out of control, and it was all because he was too afraid of losing her.

"But what about marriage? I don't think we're ready yet."

"Aren't you ready yet?" Yu Zhen sighed, his tone harsher than expected.

Li Xueyue trembled as if she was hit by him. She didn't expect his voice to become so rough and his eyes to become so cold. He looked down at her and glared at her as if she was a stranger.

Without warning, he dropped his hands and took a step back. She shivered, suddenly missing his warmth. Just then, a strong gust of wind blew past them, reminding her that this was her fault. She was the one who drew the line between them.

Li Xueyue covered her stomach, hunched her shoulders, and looked away. "I don't think I can go to Hanjian with you. Not now. I still have things to accomplish and achievements to make in Wuyi, and I...I don't want to be separated from my family."

She swallowed hard. "Yu Zhen, I'm very selfish, I know. From wanting you to wait to not wanting you to have a harem, my requirements are very strict."

"they are."

She flinched at his words. Although she was telling the truth, she wasn't ready to hear it yet. She bit her trembling lower lip, hoping to regain the confidence to move on. His rude tone and cruel eyes didn't make her situation any easier.

She had a lot to say, but she didn't dare to say it because she was afraid of hurting him. He also wanted to express his thoughts, but he didn't dare to say it because he was afraid of affecting her.

They suddenly feel as if all the progress they had made has been wasted. It’s as if they took five steps forward, only to take ten steps back.

"Li Xueyue, tell me clearly what you are up to." Yu Zhen said angrily. He clenched and unclenched his fists, and suddenly had an urge to grab her. He was about to lose his patience. The thought of being toyed with by her made his blood boil.

"What do you want from me? First you let your guard down against me, and then you make my heart and mind go haywire."

"Sorry, I--"

"Take some responsibility," he said passionately, taking a step forward. His patience wore thin when she took two steps back. It was as if she was really trying to show him that all his attempts were pointless, that this was just a game of push and pull for her.

"for what?"

"You came into my life like a fucking tornado and now you want to walk away and make my life a mess!" he roared.

Li Xueyue was shocked and her eyes widened. "I just need some time, Yu Zhen——"

"Look at me when you talk to me," he snapped, his voice cold and sharp.

Li Xueyue couldn’t. She felt like a coward for reacting like this. It was hard to control her emotions. Her heart ached, and the pain spread from her chest. She knew that if she looked into his agate eyes, which were filled with infinite depth and as complicated as the layers of hell, she would collapse on the spot.

She would give in to him and forget herself at the same time.

She gasped in surprise as he grabbed her chin and forced her to look up at him. Her eyes widened and flickered with unspeakable emotion.

Yu Zhen was stunned. She was about to cry.

Li Xueyue didn't dare to look at him again and immediately looked away. She bit her lower lip, her shoulders trembling, trying hard to suppress her emotions.

"Do you despise me so much?" he whispered. Even though his voice was cold and sharp, she could still hear the pain in it.

Li Xueyue shook her head quickly, but still kept her attention on the floor. "Don't look at him." Don't look at him. "She shouted in her mind, knowing that once she did so, her world would no longer be centered on herself. Her heart, her mind, her soul, all of it would become his. And the only thing she had to do was to lose herself in his infinite eyes, those eyes were so dark, so terrible, but full of adoration for her.

She couldn't even love herself, so how could she love this man?

"It's okay to leave me," she said suddenly, her voice trembling more than her cold body.

Yu Zhen's originally gentle expression suddenly became serious.

She didn't need to look to know that he was on guard. There was an indestructible wall in front of them, and he would never let her break it. She tried to breathe, but she couldn't. Everything was so suffocating, and suddenly her face felt hot.

"I'll be fine if you leave." Her voice was hoarse and she hated herself for it. This was a lie she told herself, with a smile on her face but hope gone from her eyes.

Finally, she looked at him, tears in her eyes, refusing to flow out. "Then please go." She hoped it wouldn't hurt so much, as if her heart was broken into pieces and her soul was torn apart. She felt a pain all over her body and her fingertips were cold.

"You will meet a great woman, Yu Zhen. One who will understand you well, a girl who will not keep you waiting like this. She will love herself as much as she loves you. And to her, loving you is nothing at all." "About hating herself. Her ambition is you, nothing else."

Yu Zhen snorted coldly. He shook his head in disbelief and let go of his hand. "To love me is to hate yourself. Is that right?"

"No, that's not what I meant—"

"I'm sure you did," he said sternly.

"Yu Zhen, I——"

"Enough of this roundabout discussion." He frowned.

Li Xueyue thought, she was used to his warm tone and gentle whispers, and his sudden anger caught her off guard. He had never spoken to her like this before. He had never been so cold, detached, or even... disgusted with her. He had every right to feel this way.

"Li Xueyue, look me in the eyes and tell me you want me to get out of your life."

"Yu Zhen, please, I can't--"

"Do it," he demanded.

She shook her head.

"Damn it, Xueyue!" he roared, stepping back in disbelief. "You can't do this to me, fuck, you really can't."

"I-"

"How could you be so cruel?" He whispered harshly. "How could you play me like a fool, and I..." He trailed off, shaking his head in disbelief. "...How could I let you do this to me?"

"I didn't take you for a fool!" She said angrily, "Yu Zhen, I like you, really..."

"No, you don't," he said, his eyes snapping to hers.

She took a step back, unable to face the reality before her. His eyes were so dead and dim. He looked at her like she was a stranger. This part broke her down in many ways.

"If you liked me, you wouldn't do this." He gestured at the distance between them. "Fuck, if you liked me, you wouldn't tell me to leave and get out of your life like I meant nothing to you!"

"That's not what I meant!" She shouted, "I want you to leave, because this is the only way to bring peace to both of us! Yu Zhen, we are not suitable. My life is tied to Wuyi, and your life is tied to the throne of Han. We can not be together."

Yu Zhen shook his head in disgust. "You're right, Li Xueyue, you're very selfish." His tone was bitter, as if he had poison on his tongue.

"I know--"

"Forget it, I've had enough." Yu Zhen said sternly, his back to her. He shook his wrist, put his coat on his shoulders, and walked away angrily.

"I'm sorry," she whispered, her quiet voice carried by the wind as his coat fluttered majestically in the distance. It reminded her of the greatest loss of her life: a man who would love her unconditionally.

But this chapter of her life didn't need love. It needed improvement. She needed achievements and accomplishments to build the steps of success for her. The steps would spiral high into the sky until they were just out of her reach. Until she was finally on the same level as him. Until she was proud enough to gaze at him bravely and declare that they were equals.

Li Xueyue wanted to get up. She wanted to be a phoenix that soared into the sky. But how could she become that without breaking free from the shackles that bound her? How could she possibly dream of touching the sun when the shadow of the past still haunted her?

If Yu Zhen was the burning sun in the sky, then she was the pitiful flower blooming on the ground, dreaming that one day her petals could touch the clouds.
