An awkward silence fell over the four of them, leaving them feeling heavy-hearted.

Yu Zhen was the only one who seemed unaffected. He sat there, drinking his tea carefreely, looking over his teacup at Li Xueyue.

She munched on her biscuits without a care in the world. Her lack of awareness of her surroundings only made her more interesting to him. She had been brought up with all these rules of etiquette, but she loved breaking them.

"So, uh..." Li Wenmin said after finishing two plates of cookies. "Are we going to deal with the elephant in the room?" He glanced at Yu Zhen.

“No, we won’t.” Li Xueyue just left it there and stopped talking about her love life. Her answer didn’t satisfy either of the twins, but what could they do? Convince her not to see him? Would she still listen?

Li Chenyang's forehead wrinkled as he pondered his words. He needed to convince Li Xueyue that letting her get entangled with King Hanjian was not the wisest decision at the moment. Especially Wen Jinkai, who was unwilling to put away his pride, but also unwilling to let Xueyue go.

“Xueyue, what are your plans now?” Li Chenyang asked, deliberately using words that were favorable to her. In fact, he tried to dissect her thought process and shape it in a way that was favorable to him.

"I thought we had discussed this issue." Li Xueyue frowned, thinking of the last time this matter was brought up.

"Yes, but we cannot ignore the laws that are in place to keep the princess safe. The royal family believes you will be safer in the palace than in the Lee residence."

"How stupid." Li Wenmin exhaled, disgusted by his uncle's lack of confidence in them. "The Li family guards are all selected from hundreds of thousands, and no one has ever missed a day of training. Everyone takes turns training, while others perform the duties of the Li family guards."

"Yes, but the law is the law." Li Chenyang sighed. "In a week, a eunuch will come to the gate of our mansion to issue a notice, requiring you to pack your bags and enter the palace."

"One day, this will change," Duke Li Chenyang promised. He walked into the room with his hands behind his back and a tired smile on his face.

"Dad, you're back early." Li Chenyang pointed out.

For a moment, King Li Chenyang's attention was focused on Yu Zhen - the only person who was not in their plan. Unless... King Li Chenyang had an idea in his mind. Although it was a little crazy, it would be worth it if it could guarantee her protection.

"Chenyang, I want to discuss this with you in private. Can you accompany me to study in private?" Li Chenyang asserted.

"Now?"

"Now."

Li Chenyang turned his gaze to Yu Zhen. "What about the commander?" he asked.

Yu Zhen knew that his presence was not needed here. For now. "I have somewhere to go," he said, standing up.

When he passed by her, Li Xueyue's whole body tensed up, and his fingers brushed her shoulder in an instant. It happened so quickly that no one saw it. Her eyes were attracted to him, watching his every move.

He realized this and instead of playing with her emotions, he soothed her with an unbalanced smile. "Have a nice day, princess."

"Likewise, Commander," she countered.

He chuckled at her little act. If he refused to call her by her name, she would have done the same. He nodded to the Duke and took his leave.

Li Chenyang's understanding eyes followed Yu Zhen down the corridor until he turned the corner and disappeared from sight. "We'll work this out," he decided.

Li Xueyue knew that the prince was speaking directly to her. "Of course."

"Okay." King Li Chenyang smiled brightly. "Wenmin, you can go with us too? We have a lot to discuss."

"Without me?" Li Xueyue raised an eyebrow.

"We're all thinking of you," King Li Chenyang assured her. "Don't worry, child. You'll be safe."

Li Xueyue believed his words, but she didn’t understand his end of the words. She would be safe. From what or who? The Emperor? What danger exactly was he in? Did he know something he couldn’t tell? Her head snapped toward Li Chenyang, startling him. He turned his gaze away from her, only to regret it and stare into her curious eyes.

"He knows something." Li Xueyue thought. Something that none of them wanted to say. How was it before?

"Is there anything I should know?"

"No." Li Wenmin affirmed.

"Of course not." King Li Chenyang confirmed.

"Don't worry." Li Chenyang said.

Her eyes narrowed in suspicion. "Are you sure I shouldn't be worried?"

"There are some details worth paying attention to," Li Chenyang said. "But we will try our best to find a solution. So, don't worry too much. OK?"

King Li Chenyang frowned at his son's willingness to share secrets. He would have to tell him about this later. It would be best not to keep her in the dark, otherwise the more she knew, the more she would panic and make illogical moves. Then again, she rarely made stupid decisions, but that didn't mean she couldn't.

Li Xueyue pursed her lips. "Can you tell me what happened in the discussion?" She asked no one in particular.

"Now, it's better for you to know nothing." Lord Li Chenyang insisted.

"Even if it's about me?" Li Xueyue asked.

"Unfortunately, yes," King Li Chenyang replied. "I really hope you can understand."

Li Xueyue frowned but did not respond.

Li Chenyang felt that there was no need to argue about this any further. He motioned for the twins to leave with him.

"See you later, Xiaoyue." Li Wenmin patted her head, and Li Chenyang walked out of the room directly.

Li Xueyue watched them walk past her window. Although they were connected, their steps were not synchronized.
