End of the World

Chapter 52 Temporary retreat

After a long journey, Wu Bin and his two companions arrived at the reservoir where they came from. Two of them experienced several battles on the way, but there were not many zombies, so they escaped without any danger.

Dafeng showed no signs of waking up. The dizziness in both of their heads had now eased and they could hear some sounds.

The reservoir was as quiet as ever, not affected at all by the battle from the direction of the airport. On the dirt road by the water, a few staggering figures flashed. This place was some distance away from the reservoir dam, so they might have come from other places.

As long as the zombies do not pose a threat to the three people, Wu Bin does not want to pay attention to them and lets them wander around.

"Let's rest here until Dafeng wakes up!" Wu Bin carried Dafeng down. This guy was definitely solid and so heavy.

"Okay, I'll go get some water!" Qiao Xinghua carried his gun and a kettle and went to the reservoir to fetch water.

Nanchong Lake Reservoir is the largest reservoir near Dongzhou City, with a maximum storage capacity of 500 million cubic meters. Given the climate in China's southern provinces, there is basically no dry season, and with the decrease in agricultural population, the biggest function of the reservoir has gradually become flood control and drainage.

Wu Bin helped Dafeng lie down and looked at the calm surface of the reservoir. If it weren't for those zombies that ruined the view, the scenery here would be pleasant. It would be better if the reservoir was farther away from the city, especially if there was an island in the middle of the reservoir lake to isolate it from the outside world. But Wu Bin knew that it would always be a beautiful vision.

Qiao Xinghua came back not long after, put down the kettle and said to Wu Bin: "Brother Bin, the zombies over there are wearing camouflage uniforms, they are not soldiers, right?"

"Are you sure?" Wu Bin was interrupted from his thoughts. He just took a quick glance at it.

"Yes, I observed them for a while and they seemed to have mutated not long ago." Qiao Xinghua found that they were different from other zombies. There was bright red blood on their bodies, and they were obviously new members.

"Maybe they came from other places!" Wu Bin touched his chin. Aren't the troops all at the airport?

"Could they be the people who stayed behind at the dam?" Qiao Xinghua asked, still remembering the smug expressions on those guys' faces when they stayed behind.

"Maybe. In that case we have to be careful. There might be something extraordinary in the reservoir!" Wu Bin felt a little uneasy at this moment. For example, the corpses in the hangar could be resurrected. Although he didn't know what they were or why they were piled together, they definitely didn't run over there on their own.

……

Looking at the zombies twisting their bodies in the pile of corpses, time seemed to stand still for a moment. Aren’t they dead bodies? But why are they still alive?

"Damn it!" The officer reacted. Aren't these the new mutant zombies from before? There were so many of them at once.

"Fire team, destroy them!" White gave the order. It would be easier to deal with them when they are in a group, but it would be terrible if they were scattered.

"Da da da" the few heavy machine guns were quickly set up and output crazy firepower, beating the complete zombies into pieces.

"Boom boom boom" several soldiers threw several grenades into the pile of corpses, but only blew off a few arms. The corpses absorbed most of the power and the damage was very limited.

"Be careful of rockets!" The shooter who had loaded the ammunition shouted loudly. Hearing the shout, the soldiers who were close by quickly did a tactical roll and rushed to the side.

With a loud "bang", the rocket with a tail flame hit the pile of corpses, blasting the zombies who had not yet fully reacted into pieces.

"Come again!"

Several other groups responded quickly, deployed into battle formation, and attempted to eliminate the zombies with heavy firepower.

The pile of corpses in the warehouse was very high, but it was quickly flattened under the continuous firepower and turned into a pile of charred fragments.

"Stop shooting!"

Everyone slowly put down their guns and looked vigilantly into the smoke-filled hangar to see if any dead zombies might jump out.

"Safe! The target has been eliminated!" reported the reconnaissance soldier.

White put away his gun and stood up, waving to the soldier next to him: "Prepare to retreat!"

You know, there are a pile of corpses in the hangar next door, and these corpses might come back to life. White asked someone to write down the coordinates and report to the headquarters, requesting heavy firepower support.

"Battalion Commander, Company One calling!"

"Switch over!"

"I'm White!" White pressed the communication headset.

"Captain, stop the shelling. Zombies are approaching from the south. Please be careful!"

"I know, stay alert."

Upon learning that zombies were coming, everyone quickened their pace. They did not find the so-called corpse moth nest in the south area, but only piles of zombies in several surrounding warehouses.

Another troop came to join White and his team. This troop was also attacked by the new type of zombies, causing considerable casualties.

The information from the command was wrong. They did not see any insects in the southern area. In fact, the information the command had was all oral from the pilots of the Army Aviation Regiment, and there was no extra time to verify it. Although there were several drones in the sky, they were basically flying on the periphery for fear of hitting corpse moths.

The troops evacuated the air force base through the gap in the wall destroyed by artillery fire. This battle did not achieve any results, but instead resulted in the loss of many personnel. Now the troops are very tired and need to rest. They can only wait for the ground tank battalion to come and join them before making plans.

After White and his men withdrew, the company that was conducting reconnaissance at the air traffic control tower also retreated. There was no point in staying there.

The command had no objection to the withdrawal of the troops from the air base. The two new regiments sent to the base suffered heavy losses. If it were not for the six battalions of old troops, the new troops would have collapsed long ago. The troops had very little ammunition left, and they had to wait for the tank battalion to deliver supplies before making plans.

The tank battalion marching towards the air force base had traveled most of the distance. With the tank troops leading the way, the journey was relatively smooth. The large force chose remote roads to march on. In fact, after the shelter repelled the siege of the zombies, the number of zombies in the surrounding area was reduced to a minimum.

When the tank troops learned that the troops airborne to the airport had suffered heavy losses, they could not help but speed up their march. They were the main force of this plan, and arriving at the air force base earlier could avoid greater losses to the leading troops.

Due to the attack of corpse moths, the Army Aviation is unable to send follow-up troops and supplies directly to the battlefield. The two new regiments will wait for the arrival of the tank battalion seven kilometers outside the air force base.

The tank battalion and all the equipment support vehicles of the two old infantry regiments, totaling nearly 200 vehicles, marched towards the air force base in a mighty manner. The scene was truly spectacular. Fortunately, there were relatively few zombies on the road, and with the escort of the tank battalion, they advanced rapidly all the way.

Not long after the vanguard troops withdrew from the airport, tanks escorted reinforcements to the outskirts of the airport, set up camp in an open area, and contacted and reunited with the vanguard troops. They needed to collect all the intelligence about the operation. The information provided by the command center and aerial reconnaissance were not comprehensive. The battlefield was more complicated than expected. The vanguard troops entered the airport for a test and had more detailed information.

The troops at the airport entered the temporary camp for replenishment, and everyone's nerves relaxed a little. The sun was about to set in two hours, and the troops could not move at night. In addition, the reinforcements were exhausted from the long journey and needed rest. After several officers settled everyone down to rest, they went to meet the commander.

At night, the air force base finally returned to peace. The restless zombies quieted down and wandered among the airport facilities. The moon was particularly hazy tonight, as if it had been soaked in water. The faint moonlight could not penetrate the night mist. Without the light pollution of the city, the environment returned to its original darkness.

A glimmer of fire lit up at the edge of the Nanchong Lake Reservoir not far away, which seemed particularly abrupt in the dark night. The fire was emitted by a small pile of fire and could barely illuminate the surrounding area within a few meters.

There was a large bundle of firewood next to the fire, but no one was seen. It turned out that Wu Bin and the other two started the fire and climbed up the tree nearby. It was very dangerous in the wilderness at night, especially when there were zombies nearby.

Dafeng woke up when it was almost dark. He still had some aftereffects from the explosion, but they were not too serious. At least he was conscious.

I'm afraid the three of them will have to temporarily roost in the tree like monkeys tonight. The fire on the ground can provide them with some vision. Since night combat was not considered, the vanguard troops were not equipped with any night vision equipment. Not to mention night vision equipment, the guns issued to the new troops were all mechanical sights, which was why the new troops' hit rate was so touching. Without the technology and the equipment could not keep up, the command had predicted this situation a long time ago, but the actual situation was worse than expected.

The only aiming scope is on the rocket launcher carried by Dafeng. It is an integrated one and cannot be disassembled. It is now lying quietly on the ground.

The three of them hugged the tree trunk tightly, and no one spoke. They were quite far away, and since communication basically relied on shouting, there was little communication. Before this, the three of them had already discussed the night's duty matters.

Wu Bin didn't know that the reinforcements had arrived at the outskirts of the air force base. He planned to go to the reservoir dam tomorrow and meet up with the troops who stayed behind to take care of the wounded, and then find a way to return to the airport. You know, the consequences of being a deserter are very serious, and if he still wants to stay in the shelter, he must go back.

It was approaching the Frost Descent. Although there was still a temperature difference of several degrees between day and night in the south, the evening breeze was strong near the reservoir and the trees swayed in the wind, which made the three people hug the tree trunks even tighter. Everyone was wearing thin clothes and it was windy at night, so sleeping was already a luxury. There was a fire on the ground but they could not go down to warm themselves by it. Tonight would be an especially long night.

I don’t know how long it was, it seemed like a century, there was a hint of dawn in the distant eastern sky. The three of them had been hanging in the tree in the breeze all night, basically in a state of half-asleep and half-wakefulness, and finally experienced the coldness of being at high places.

When the surrounding environment became vaguely visible, the three of them scrambled down from the tree, gathered around the fire, and threw all the remaining firewood on it, burning the dying bonfire very vigorously, as they would not need it later anyway.

An hour later, the three of them finished roasting the fire, had a simple breakfast, extinguished the flames and prepared to set off.

"If I had known that there would be no zombies coming all night, I would have just lay down by the fire and slept. How comfortable it would have been!" Dafeng's complexion looked much better, not so pale, and gradually returned to normal.

"Who knows about this kind of thing? Let me make it clear first, if you are dragged away by zombies, I won't care about you!" Qiao Xinghua retorted.

"Okay, let's save some breath and get on with our journey!" Wu Bin immediately stopped the two people when he saw they were about to quarrel again.
