End of the World
Chapter 1 Outbreak
"Huh, I finally passed the test." Wu Bin breathed a sigh of relief as he came out of the vehicle management office examination room. This was his second time taking the second subject test, and fortunately he finally passed.
"It's not too difficult to pass the second and third subjects. As long as you pay attention, you will get your driver's license soon, but..." Wu Bin sighed. He got his driver's license but had no car to drive. He probably felt that he was just like what netizens said, and he had not driven a car for several years after getting his driver's license.
Wu Bin is a student at a technical college in Dongzhou City, studying automobile maintenance in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, but he has only studied for a little over half a year.
Wu Bin took the bus back to school and just got off the bus when he saw two ambulances driving out of the school. He didn't know what had happened. Wu Bin just looked at them from a distance and ignored them. He was not the kind of person who liked to join in the fun, and if anything happened, it would quickly go viral on the school's circle of friends.
Today is the weekend and Wu Bin decided to have dinner outside the school. He was really tired of the food in the school cafeteria. He only had the opportunity to eat out during the weekend.
After dinner, Wu Bin went straight back to the dormitory. After taking a shower, he said hello to his roommates, then took a flashlight and charger to the classroom to review.
Wu Bin met many couples in the teaching building. If it was too much, couldn't they go somewhere else to date? Dating was quite common in the school. As long as it wasn't too outrageous, the school generally didn't care. To be honest, Wu Bin sometimes envied them, but when he thought about his own conditions, he couldn't help but feel discouraged.
Wu Bin returned to the classroom and played some music to relax himself. Looking at the afterglow of the sunset outside the window, Wu Bin couldn't help but recall many past events. Wu Bin was not a fresh graduate. After graduating from high school, he went out to work for a year before returning to the technical school. Wu Bin knew the importance of skills while he was outside. Learning a skill may not make you successful but at least it can support your life.
Most of Wu Bin's high school classmates also go to college in Dongzhou City. Wu Bin can get a glimpse of their college life from the WeChat group chat. Wu Bin sometimes envies them. It is precisely because of family reasons that Wu Bin gave up the expensive art school, which is somewhat regrettable. These classmates often have dinner and play together during holidays. Although Wu Bin is in Dongzhou City, he has never participated in it. First of all, there is no common language in majors. Secondly, there is an essential difference between technical schools and universities. Wu Bin is afraid of being laughed at, so he might as well pretend to be dead. He will not speak unless he is named. He is basically a person who has no sense of existence.
As time went by, the friendship between classmates faded. On the contrary, Wu Bin had a good relationship with his current classmates. Perhaps it was because there were only fifteen students in the class, all boys, living in the same dormitory.
Wu Bin collected his thoughts. Everyone has their own life, just be yourself. He turned off the music and started to get into the state. He had an exam next week and had to hurry up to review.
It was completely dark outside and the entire campus was shrouded in darkness. Except for a few classrooms with lights on, the rest of the teaching building was immersed in darkness. There seemed to be some noisy shouts coming from the darkness, but they soon disappeared and returned to silence.
"Squeak-bang", a loud noise broke the silence of the teaching building and startled Wu Bin. Wu Bin walked to the window and looked out. The sound came from the highway not far outside the school. Due to some trees blocking the view, the vehicle that hit him could not be seen from here.
Wu Bin returned to his seat and checked the time. It was past nine in the evening and it was getting late. He tidied up his desk, turned off the lights, locked the door, and returned to the dormitory.
Wu Bin was walking in the corridor of the teaching building when he faintly smelled a scent of blood. He shone a flashlight around but didn't see anything. Wu Bin ignored it and continued walking forward.
Passing by a classroom with the lights still on, Wu Bin found something unusual. There was no one in the classroom, and the desks and chairs were a little messy. The books on the table had fallen to the ground. After confirming that there was no one there, Wu Bin just turned off the lights.
When Wu Bin went downstairs, he found something even more wrong. The air was filled with a strong smell of blood, which was even more disgusting than that of a slaughterhouse. A gust of wind brought the smell and choked Wu Bin a few times.
Wu Bin shuddered. What was going on? Was it a prank? He shone the flashlight around and found a person lying in a pool of blood not far away. She looked like a girl, and there were many bloodstains around her. It was a tragic scene.
Wu Bin wanted to go up to see if he could still rescue the person, but he heard hurried footsteps coming from the right. Wu Bin followed the direction and saw two bloody figures running towards him. Behind them, there were four or five people surrounding a person and fighting over his internal organs. There seemed to be a mutilated corpse next to them.
Although it was summer, Wu Bin suddenly felt cold all over, as if he had an indescribable chill, and his body began to shiver uncontrollably.
Wu Bin was stunned for two seconds when he saw the two bloody figures. He immediately regained control of his body and turned around to run back to the teaching building. He didn't care what was chasing him now. He just had to run. Wu Bin ran up to the fifth floor in a few steps. The classroom was relatively safe.
Love is encountered around the corner. At the turning of the stairs, Wu Bin collided with a hurried figure. Wu Bin ignored the pain and hurriedly looked at the figure. The figure revealed a ferocious face. Wu Bin screamed and kicked the figure down, then quickly ran to the classroom at the end of the corridor.
Running to the classroom door, Wu Bin took out the key. As he was too nervous, he failed to insert it into the keyhole several times. Wu Bin felt the coldness coming from behind him, calmed himself down, and finally opened the classroom door. Wu Bin flashed into the door and quickly bolted the door handle from the inside. A few seconds later, there was a huge banging sound from the classroom door. The monsters hit the door. Fortunately, the classroom door was made of iron and was relatively solid. They knocked on the door but couldn't break it open. After a few minutes, they seemed to give up this useless effort, and it gradually became quiet outside.
Wu Bin didn't dare to make any sound as he stared at the window nervously. The window was a little high from the ground and difficult to climb. He had thought it was too high for cleaning before, and now he was afraid that it was not high enough and would allow monsters to come in.
About half an hour later, the monster outside seemed to be attracted by other sounds, and the footsteps gradually faded away. Only then did Wu Bin breathe a sigh of relief. He quickly checked the windows and drew the curtains. Wu Bin tried to stay away from the classroom door and sat by the window on the other side.
"What is going on?" Wu Bin had no idea what was happening outside.
Wu Bin turned on his phone and just connected to the Internet, he received a WeChat group message. Some groups that were not very active at ordinary times were now filled with various messages. The common point of these messages was that they were all related to what happened outside. They were all normal people who suddenly mutated into monsters. Many people who were unprepared or unlucky died because of this. They had no sense of pain and were extremely powerful. Everyone thought they were zombies.
"It turned out to be zombies," Wu Bin suddenly realized. He had watched many movies of this kind, but he never expected that zombies that were only on the screen would appear in real life. Why did so many people become zombies at the same time? Wu Bin remembered that an ambulance came out of the school when he returned to school in the afternoon. At that time, someone should have shown symptoms.
But now is not the time to think about these things. If the monster outside is a zombie, Wu Bin must be mentally prepared. In the movie, the zombie's weakness is the head, and reality should be similar.
Wu Bin first dialed his home number, feeling very nervous. For some reason, the call did not go through and a busy tone came. He redialed several times but got the same result. Wu Bin sighed and this time when he dialed the emergency number, a busy tone was heard. None of the emergency calls could be connected, which showed how serious the disaster was.
Wu Bin put down his phone, not knowing what to do. Wu Bin felt that the incident happened suddenly and the disaster was serious. The government army must be in chaos. Rescue might be available but it would be impossible to last until that time. Now he could only rely on himself.
There was no food in the classroom except two bottles of water, so Wu Bin could only leave as soon as possible. But how to leave troubled Wu Bin. There was a wall not far from the teaching building, and he could leave the school by climbing over it. The problem was how to leave the teaching building. Wu Bin didn't want to fight the zombies head-on, and he didn't have any weapons in his hands.
If he took the stairs, he would definitely encounter zombies. If he didn't take the stairs... Wu Bin looked out the window and quickly came up with an idea. Wu Bin removed all the curtains on his side, found a utility knife to cut the curtains, and finally tied the cut curtains together, fixed one end and threw the other end down the stairs, so that he could slowly climb down.
However, it was too dangerous at night, so Wu Bin decided to leave tomorrow. As for weapons, Wu Bin only had a utility knife, which posed no threat to the zombies. There were no suitable weapons in the classroom, so Wu Bin had to sharpen one end of several broomsticks to use as spears.
It was almost twelve o'clock when Wu Bin finished all this. Tonight was destined to be a sleepless night for everyone. Wu Bin sent a message to each WeChat group or friend, but only a few people responded. These people were far away from Wu Bin, so it was impossible to form a team.
After exiting WeChat, Wu Bin went into the app store and downloaded maps from several different manufacturers, especially satellite images, which were particularly clear from foreign manufacturers.
It was already dark, but the outside was still bustling. From time to time, there were sounds coming from the outside, like shouting, yelling, and screaming. They gathered together to form a noisy sound that spread all around. Wu Bin looked at the tall buildings in the distance. They were brightly lit, but the surrounding scenery had suddenly changed. Under the lights, a bloody terror was going on. No one knew how many people had died when the sun rose.
Wu Bin plugged his phone into the charger and closed his eyes, no longer paying attention to the carnage outside. Wu Bin hoped that this was a dream, just like his previous absurd fantasies, and that the world would return to its original state after waking up.
Wu Bin woke up at daybreak. He was half asleep and half awake all night. The occasional noises from outside and the psychological anxiety made it impossible for him to fall asleep.
When the first ray of sunlight shines on the earth, it heralds the beginning of a new day and the beginning of a new era. Wu Bin took a deep breath. He was facing a new world. Although it was still the same sun, it was not an exaggeration to call the new world hell. It would be everyone's nightmare.
Wu Bin called home again, but still couldn't get through. No one answered the emergency call. Wu Bin sighed and could only put the matter aside for the time being. Wu Bin stretched his body, picked up the backpack left by his classmates in the classroom, and threw down a roll of curtains in his hand.
