A grinder is a machine tool that uses abrasive tools to grind the surface of a workpiece. It is generally divided into external cylindrical grinders, internal cylindrical grinders, surface grinders, centerless grinders, tool grinders, etc.

As for the grinding machines in steel mills, most of them are roll grinders, centerless grinders, cylindrical grinders and surface grinders. But in 1951, there were only three types of grinding machines in China: cylindrical grinders, internal grinders and surface grinders.

Of course, there may be more types abroad, but in domestic steel mills, these three types of grinders are the mainstream at present. This is also a helpless move, after all, the blockade of my country by foreign countries is well known to everyone.

Of course, this had little impact on Zhou Tian, ​​as he could design any advanced grinder. However, designing it did not mean that it could be manufactured at the current domestic industrial level, so he naturally chose to prioritize the transformation of the three grinders in the steel mill.

Cylindrical grinding machines became his first priority.

Cylindrical grinders are machine tools used to grind cylindrical and conical outer surfaces and shoulder end faces. Some can also grind inner holes and inner and outer conical surfaces with larger tapers.

The external cylindrical grinder consists of six parts in total, namely the bed, worktable, headstock, grinding wheel frame and feed mechanism.

The first thing Zhou Tian wanted to improve was the precision and movement smoothness of the cylindrical grinder. As long as these two aspects were improved, the performance of the cylindrical grinder would be significantly improved.

If we want to improve these two aspects, we can only think of ways to improve the bearings first. Most of the grinding machines today still use sliding bearings, which rely on the sliding friction between the shaft and the bearing shell to work. Although the structure is relatively simple, the friction coefficient is large, the wear is fast, frequent maintenance and lubrication are required, and the accuracy and stability are limited.

If he remembered correctly, in the 1960s and 1970s of his previous life, most factories in my country used rolling bearings, and only in some heavy industrial fields were sliding bearings still used. This was due to the emergence of liquid hydrostatic bearings.

If liquid hydrostatic bearings can be developed in advance, it will play a decisive role in the improvement of grinding machines.

In addition, Zhou Tian also considered whether CNC technology could be introduced. After all, as far as he knew, China had already realized CNC in 58 and developed the first CNC machine tool. However, to realize this technology, the existing electrical system needs to be upgraded on a large scale, and a lot of electronic tubes are needed for mechanical programming.

At present, my country's electron tube industry is just getting started. It may take more time to reach the technological level of 58.

From a technical perspective, it is difficult to achieve. Unless he is willing to invest in researching CNC technology, it will be impossible to achieve CNC grinding in a short period of time. Most importantly, now is not the right time, which goes against his original idea.

After weighing the pros and cons, Zhou Tian decided to focus on the research and development of hydrostatic bearings, while not giving up on the improvement of rolling bearings. He believes that through these efforts, the cylindrical grinder will be able to greatly improve the processing quality and efficiency, and even if it cannot compare with foreign products of the same period, it will not lag behind by much.

With the idea in mind, he began to work hard.
