The cold-hearted president falls in love with the vengeful princess
Chapter 4 Dad's Funeral
On Friday, my mother got up very early. I was sleeping next to her and touched her with my hand. I felt something was wrong. I opened my eyes and saw that my mother was gone from the bed. I quickly got out of bed, put on my shoes, and searched the hospital corridor and every ward, but I didn't see my mother.
I cried out in anxiety, "Mom, Dad hasn't been buried yet, where have you been? Please show up soon. It was the coldest morning in Ancheng. The wind outside the window slowly blew into the corridor, making me feel piercingly cold. I was icy from head to toe. I hadn't taken a shower for several days. I hadn't changed my coat from the clothes I wore on the night of Dad's car accident to now.
I held onto the wall, looking with red eyes at every patient's family member coming out of the ward, but I didn't see my mother. I squatted down and burst into tears. Suddenly, I felt someone touching the back of my head. I raised my eyes and looked at the person. It was my mother. She looked at me with a sad expression, tears in her eyes.
I hugged my mother tightly and cried: Mom, where have you been? I didn’t see you when I woke up. I looked in every ward, but I didn’t see you. I thought you were gone too... My mother didn’t say anything. She slowly helped me up and took me back to the ward.
Returning to the ward, I slowly sat on the bed. I walked over and held my mother's hands. Her palms were so cold, so I put her palms on her cheeks to warm them up a little. She touched my head and said: I'm going to handle the discharge procedures, and we will be discharged in the afternoon. Mom is fine.
I covered my mother's cold palms and looked at her with worry in my eyes. She hasn't smiled since my father left. My mother looked ahead with lifeless eyes. There was no light in her eyes. Tears fell out with a slight blink of an eye. It broke my heart to see it.
I vowed to let my mother live a happy life. In the afternoon, my mother simply tidied herself up. I asked her to wash up, and I followed her. I helped my weak mother out of the ward. As soon as I walked out of the ward, I saw Jiayi.
She came running over in a hurry with the medical record book. I helped my mother walk to Jiayi and said: "Sorry for bothering you these days. Mom has completed the withdrawal procedures. Let's go home now." Jiayi looked at me and then at her mother.
She looked at my mother and said softly: Auntie, it's not a problem. I will take care of Xiaoyan's father's funeral. I will pick you and Xiaoyan up on Monday. My mother didn't react until she heard the word "funeral". She looked up at Jiayi and said: "Okay, thank you for your hard work. Thank you for being so kind to me and Xiaoyan. Go and get busy!"
Jiayi pulled my clothes and walked aside. I looked at Jiayi. She took out a wad of money from the pocket of her white coat and stuffed it into my hand, saying: Here are nine hundred yuan. Buy some nourishment for your mother. She has been crying these days and is weak. I will come to your house to pick you and your mother up on Monday, and I will take care of your father's funeral. That's it for now. I'm going to get busy.
After saying that, she quickly ran in the other direction, helped my mother out of the hospital, and got into a taxi. My mother leaned on my shoulder and quickly fell asleep. I touched my mother's cheek and said, "Mom, you must be well and live well for Dad." In the taxi, my eyes became wet again. I sniffed, raised my head and opened my eyes wide, holding back the tears.
When I got home, my mother went straight to the room. When she was about to close the door, she looked at me and said in a light voice: "Let's make the meal simple, Xiaoyan, call me when the meal is ready, I'm going to sleep." After that, she closed the door. When I heard the sound of the door being locked, I leaned against the door and couldn't stop crying.
In the room, I looked at the room where I was alone, and tears couldn't stop flowing from my eyes. I lay on the bed and touched the place where Xiaoyan's father had slept. It's only been a few days and you left. There was still the smell of Xiaoyan's father's tobacco on the bed. I opened the curtains, and it was so cold outside that even people standing in front of the window felt pain in their hands.
I don't know when I fell asleep. When I opened my eyes, I saw Xiaoyan sleeping on the sofa in the room. I got out of bed and gently covered her with a thick quilt. When I was about to get up, Xiaoyan grabbed my hand and said: Mom, you have to live for dad. I will try my best to give you a happy life. Mom, believe me.
I covered my mouth and ran out of the room. The warmth of the house was gone. I walked down the stairs and walked to the dining room. I saw three dishes and one soup on the table: sweet and sour meatballs, chicken and duck stew, and stir-fried lettuce. There was also a pot of chicken soup with medicinal herbs. Xiaoyan had really grown up. I sat on the chair and looked at the steaming dishes.
I picked up the chopsticks and tasted the dishes. The taste was just right, not greasy. While eating, I saw Xiaoyan sitting on the chair opposite. I looked at Xiaoyan and said, "The dishes are delicious. Thank you for your hard work, Xiaoyan. Mom hasn't eaten such delicious meals in the past three days."
I deboned the chicken and duck legs and put them in my mother's bowl. She ate them bit by bit with chopsticks, but she seemed to be chewing wax. As she chewed, tears began to fall. I put down the bowl and walked to my mother.
My mother looked up at me and said in a tearful voice: "Xiaoyan, I heard everything. I will live well in place of your father. We will all be well and we will be happy." I was already crying so hard that I squatted down and hugged my mother.
I finished this dinner while crying. After dinner, my mother went to take a shower. I went to the kitchen to wash my mother's and my bowls and put them back in the cupboard. From then on, there were only two of us using the bowls and chopsticks. The cupboard also contained the bowls and chopsticks that my father had eaten from.
With trembling hands, I touched the dishes and chopsticks that my father had used to eat. Why was God so cruel to me, depriving me of the family that belonged to me? The water from the faucet was still flowing, but my tears had already flowed out. After washing the dishes, I walked out of the kitchen and heard my mother's voice coming from the bathroom.
I walked to the door and listened to the noise inside. Mom was crying. She was crying very sadly. I slipped to the ground, covering my face, and crying silently again. This home is no longer the warm, happy and blessed family it used to be. Dad has left mom and me forever.
A weekend passed in a daze. On Monday morning, I got up early and ran to my mother's room. My mother had already changed into a black dress. I walked to her side. She looked at me and said in a hoarse voice: Go wash up and change your clothes, Xiaoyan. Today is your father's funeral.
I nodded, walked back to my room, washed up quickly, opened the closet, took out a black waist-length slim princess dress, put it on, walked to the dressing mirror, casually tied up my long hair, put on some lipstick, and walked out of the room.
Mom was sitting on the sofa, leaning back with her eyes closed, looking at the huge clock at home. The time showed a quarter past eight. Just as I was about to make some breakfast for Mom, the doorbell rang. I walked to the door and opened it. It was Jiayi. She was wearing a black coat and tight cotton pants, but she didn't look fat at all.
She walked in, looked at me and said: Oh, Xiaoyan, why are you only wearing a skirt? It's so cold outside. Hurry up and put on your coat. There's no rush. It's only eight o'clock. The funeral starts at ten o'clock. By the way, I bought breakfast for you and your mother.
She took off her shoes and put the two bags on the dining table. I walked back to the room, took out a black fluffy coat, put it on, walked out of the room, went down the stairs, and saw Jiayi holding her mother's hand, patting her mother's shoulder and sitting on the sofa.
Jiayi saw me getting up from the sofa and said: Hurry up and have breakfast. My mother and I walked to the dining room and sat at the dining table. There were two bags containing boiled eggs, vegetable dumplings, soup dumplings and a small bottle of pure milk. I pushed the breakfast bag to my mother.
Mom ate a little bit at a time, and I ate very quickly. I finished my breakfast in a few bites. After drinking pure milk, my stomach just felt full. Jiayi came over and looked at me and said: The car will arrive at nine o'clock soon. We can go downstairs at about the same time. Xiaoyan, don't be too sad today. I'm here. Auntie, you too.
Jiayi held my and my mother's hands and said, "You all have to be well today. I'm here to take good care of you." My mother and I looked at Jiayi and asked, "Dad, did you send this beautiful girl like Jiayi to take care of me?" My mother looked at Jiayi and said, "Jiayi, thank you so much. It's not your fault. Don't blame yourself. It's my fault. I shouldn't have done that."
I quickly stopped my mother and said, "Okay, mom, stop talking. If you have anything to say, wait until after dad's funeral." My mother stopped talking immediately. It was half past eight soon. My mother and I put on our shoes casually, and I helped my mother out of the door.
Jiayi held her mother and looked at me and said: Xiaoyan, you go downstairs first, your mother and I will go downstairs. I left the door first and took the elevator downstairs. In the elevator, I looked at myself. I was wearing a black skirt and a long fluffy coat. My eyes were a little swollen because of crying.
I took out the eye bag pen from my bag and applied it under my eyelids, making my whole face look very Korean. My father often told me that our Xiaoyan looks really Korean. Thinking of what my father said, my eyes became moist again and I patted her little face.
The elevator dinged and reached the first floor. I walked out of the elevator and into the garden. It suddenly felt like an ice cellar. I was so cold that I felt numb from head to toe. I zipped up my coat and waited for Jiayi and her mother at the entrance of the garden stairs.
After waiting for a long time, I saw Jiayi and her mother, and I walked forward. Jiayi looked at me and said, "The car will be here soon, let's go out of the garden gate!" Jiayi and I supported her mother and walked out of the garden gate. Outside the garden, the three of us were particularly eye-catching, all dressed in black.
My mother said weakly, "Let these people see, yes, it's me, I'm the murderer." My mother's eyes suddenly turned red and she shouted at passers-by. Jiayi saw that something was wrong and quickly looked at me and said, "Take your mother back to the garden, I'll take care of it here, hurry up!"
I walked into the garden holding my mother's arm, and turned to look behind me. Jiayi was saying something to the passers-by. She helped my mother sit on a chair in the garden. My mother said in a hoarse voice: I am sorry to make a fool of myself, but I am indeed a murderer, Xiaoyan, why don't I leave for a while!
I stared at my mother with my eyes wide open and said: No, I'm worried, you can't go anywhere, mom, just stay by my side. My mother turned her face to the side with tears in her eyes and said: But I have no face to live, I killed your father, I am a murderer, without me your father would not have died in such pain.
I immediately hugged my mother and comforted her: "Mom, don't think like that. It's not your fault. Live well. Believe me, I will try my best to make you happy." After a while, a white car drove up the garden aisle.
I heard a deafening car noise and looked towards the garden aisle. Jiayi waved at me. My mother and I ran to the garden aisle and got on the car to the mourning hall. My mother fell asleep. I looked at the tears in the corners of my mother's eyes and felt heartbroken.
After driving for an hour, we arrived at the largest cemetery in Ancheng. I woke up my mother. She was in a trance for a moment, then opened the car door. I quickly opened the door, got out of the car and supported my mother. Jiayi also got out of the car.
Following Jiayi's footsteps, my mother and I walked to the place where funerals were held. It was sparsely populated. When we entered the place, we saw the nurses and chief doctors whom we had seen in the hospital. They walked up to my mother and me and said, "Please accept my condolences. We are here to see your father and your husband off."
My mother didn't cry, she just nodded mechanically. My father didn't tell any friends or relatives about his passing, so only my mother and I knew about it. The director and doctor Hu Shuo of Ancheng Hospital were both wearing black clothes and looked at my mother and me with sad expressions.
The funeral started at around ten o'clock. When my mother and I walked into the mourning hall, we saw my father's portrait frame. I looked at Jiayi blankly. She looked at me and said: I saw a photo of you and your parents on your phone screen in the hospital, and I secretly took a photo of it with my phone, so...
I was about to speak when I saw my mother kneeling in front of my father's portrait frame and crying. Jiayi and I ran over and squatted on the ground and touched my mother's shoulders. My mother had a thin body and was holding my father's portrait frame with trembling hands. Her tears fell on the smiling face in my father's portrait frame.
My eyes immediately became wet, and I tried hard to hold back the tears. Mom cried for a long time, and then the funeral began. Jiayi invited many people who organized the funeral. The chief nurse and doctor of the hospital all bowed three times to Dad's portrait frame and said some funeral words.
When it was my mother and I's turn to bow three times, we couldn't say a word. Jiayi encouraged us and said, "Xiaoyan, auntie, I won't let you be sad as long as I'm here. If you do this, your uncle and your father will also be sad. Come on, Xiaoyan, auntie."
Suddenly, my mother stopped crying. She stopped crying, held my hand, bowed three times towards the portrait frame of my father, and said solemnly: "Yan's father, go well. Xiaoyan will take good care of me, and I will take good care of her. She has a new best friend, and Xiaoyan will not be alone anymore."
Then, Dad's body was buried and cremated. During this period, Mom, miraculously, didn't cry at all, and no one heard her crying. Her eyes were just red, lifeless, and dull.
