Since Tang Zhongbai took over the case, the murderer had not yet appeared and the identity of the deceased had not been ascertained. He could not just abandon the case and walk away easily.

"Go back. You've been traveling all day. Have a good rest tonight. If you want to stay and investigate the case, let them go first tomorrow and I'll stay with you."

Jiang Muxia tugged at his sleeve, sleepiness gradually showing in her eyes. Her voice was soft, and her words were full of heartache for him.

She knew his dilemma. He wanted to find the murderer tonight so as not to delay his schedule for tomorrow.

She rushed back to the county early to deliver gifts so that she could reach the capital as soon as possible. Tang Zhongbai was more eager and anxious to get married than she was.

He had been waiting for this day for more than a year, and finally waited for her to agree to the marriage. He didn't want anything to go wrong along the way and miss such a great day.

Tang Zhongbai looked back at her, and she nodded heavily at him with a firm look in her eyes.

"Yes." The mayor advised, "It's dark and we're sleepy. Why not check it tomorrow?"

The mayor secretly complained. If he hadn't met them, he would have gone home to sleep. The night patrol in the freezing winter was just a job. He planned to have a drink at the Yingkelai Restaurant and then go home.

Instead, he followed Tang Zhongbai back and forth several times, and he had long lost his patience. As soon as Jiang Muxia persuaded him, he breathed a sigh of relief and couldn't wait to return to his warm home.

After returning to the inn, Tang San went to the backyard to fetch water for Tang Zhongbai to wash.

The light was on in the backyard wing, but there was no movement. He went into the kitchen, blew out the fire starter, and scooped a pot of warm water left for them. He blew out the fire starter and left.

He had just taken a few steps when he heard a clang in the kitchen behind him. He stopped, turned around and looked back. The kitchen was dark and there was nothing in it.

"It's a mouse." He muttered softly.

He continued walking towards the front yard and when he reached the corner, he saw a snow-white object flying past him towards the kitchen.

"Little Snow."

He was worried that something might happen to it, so he reluctantly put the copper basin on the ground and turned to chase Xiaoxue.

When he came in just now, he saw a candlestick in front of the stove and lit it. He looked around the kitchen carefully and found that there was a partition on the left side of the entrance. The door of the partition was closed, and Xiaoxue scratched the door with her front hooves and kept barking.

Tang San became alert. He suddenly realized that the sound from the kitchen just now actually came from the compartment.

He concluded that there was someone inside.

He held his breath and tiptoed to the door of the compartment. He made a "hush" sound to Xiaoxue who was trying to open the door, and pulled out a knife from his waist.

He aimed at the door and slowly backed away. Xiaoxue cleverly followed him.

Tang San raised his foot and kicked. The door opened with a loud bang, bounced back against the wall and closed again.

Tang San walked forward and pushed it open, looking in with the light from the outside. Looking around the room, it was narrow and cramped, with the door and the shelves opposite filled with messy sundries. Under the back window was a small bed that could only accommodate one person, and there was a person lying on the bed.

There was an old copper basin with a hole in it lying upside down on the ground. The sound just now should be the sound of the copper basin falling to the ground.

The ground was damp, as if it had just been sprinkled with water.

The person on the bed was awakened by the sound of the door being kicked. He turned over, rubbed his eyes, and shouted impatiently, "Who is it? Are you sick? Are you looking for trouble in the middle of the night?"

He is a man in his twenties, and looks about 70% similar to the store owner.

Xiaoxue followed Tang San into the inner room, and he quickly covered his nose.

The smell of stale mold, human sweat and foot odor, and blood.

Tang San stared at the man in front of him, wondering how he fell asleep and how he could bear it.

There were chaotic footsteps outside the house, and the shop owner and Tang Zhongbai, who were still awake, both ran over.

"Tang San, what's going on?"

"Sir, Xiaoxue came over and pried at the door and called out. I suspected there was a thief inside, so I kicked the door open to take a look. I didn't expect there was actually a person living inside."

The shop owner quickly squeezed in with a smile, "He's my distant nephew, helping out in the shop. Business has been bad recently, and we had a quarrel, so he ran here to sleep in anger. I'm really sorry for making you worry."

The smell inside came out one after another, and everyone retreated.

The truth was revealed, and Tang Zhongbai asked everyone to go back to their rooms to rest.

Jiang Muxia stood at the kitchen door, calling out, "Xiaoxue, come quickly, let's go back and rest. Be good and listen to me."

Xiaoxue looked back at her, then at the man in the cubicle, straightened her neck and barked.

Jiang Muxia frowned. Xiaoxue had never been so stubborn. There must be something unusual.

The owner didn't wait for the cat to run out by itself, but went into the compartment and bent down to pick it up.

Xiaoxue quickly dodged and ran to Jiang Muxia. She called out and turned to look at the cubicle, then called out again and turned to look at the cubicle again.

After repeating this several times, Jiang Muxia was certain that there must be something unusual in this room.

The shop owner had already scolded the man in the cubicle out of the house, and he took a copper lock and was about to lock the door.

Xiaoxue screamed even louder, the owner's action made her make up her mind.

This door cannot be locked.

She stepped forward to stop the shop owner, "Wait."

Tang Zhongbai signaled Tang San and Tang Si to capture the man who had gone out. The man passed by them with a strong smell of iron on his body.

He thought of the severed hands, and when he connected the two together, he had some guess in his mind.

The shop owner paused, his body trembling unconsciously, he smiled with a forced smile, looked away and asked in a nonchalant manner, "What's wrong?"

Jiang Muxia snatched the key from him. The owner tried to snatch it back, but Tang Zhongbai stepped forward and stood in front of him, staring at him coldly.

The shop owner's face turned pale, "Are you robbers? Why did you take my keys?"

"What are you feeling guilty about?"

The shop owner stiffened his neck and yelled at him, "When did I feel guilty?"

Jiang Muxia had already opened the copper lock, and Xiaoxue ran in through the crack in the door, barking wildly at the bottom of the bed.

She rushed over and lifted the bed sheet that was hanging on the ground. Tang Zhongbai held the candlestick and placed it beside the bed.

The scene under the bed was shocking. There were two large wooden basins placed side by side. One basin was full of crushed body parts, and the other contained two legs and a human head that had not yet been processed.

Even Jiang Muxia, who had killed people and seen blood, was so frightened by this tragic scene that she screamed, fell to the ground, and her stomach churned.

She rushed out of the house, and when the cold wind blew, she finally couldn't help it and vomited while leaning against the wall.

"Tang San and Tang Si, take down these two men."

Tang Zhongbai was furious. It was true that poor and remote areas gave rise to unruly people. Killing people and dismembering their bodies was a heinous crime.

The shop owner kowtowed and said, "It was really not me. By the time I found out, the beast had already killed the man. I had no choice. If someone died in my shop, I would not be able to do business in the future. That's why I listened to the beast and cut up the body and threw it out. No one found out it was us. Please spare me, hero, please spare me."

Tang Zhongbai kicked him and said angrily, "Spare his life! When he was killed, did he beg for mercy like you did? Did you let him go? Tell me, who is he and why did you kill him?"

The shop owner glared at the man who was kneeling on the ground with his head bowed and said nothing. He dared not not answer Tang Zhongbai's words, "He is a guest who is staying overnight."

He suddenly jumped up in a frenzy, threw himself at the man and started fighting. Tang San grabbed him and pressed him to the ground. The shop owner covered his face and cried bitterly, "I shouldn't have taken him in. In the end, he still hurt me."

Tang Zhongbai was not in a hurry. He waited until he finished crying and then asked, "Tell me, why did you kill him?"

The shop owner wiped his tears and slumped on the ground. His eyes were dull and his expression was dejected. "It's also this person's fault that he was exposed. The little beast saw it and had evil intentions. That's why... I regret it..."

In the yard, Tang Si had put the body parts together, except for a pair of hands.

"What do you have to regret? It was obviously you who colluded with him to dismember the body. When we first arrived, you hid in the kitchen and didn't dare to come out. You were just waiting for us to give up and leave as soon as possible. What you didn't expect was that the fat uncle used to be a frequent customer of your store. He went straight to you and forced you out. I originally thought that you had just woken up and put on your coat inside out. Now I think that your inner clothes must have been soiled when dismembering the body, and you put on your coat inside out in a panic. The floor in the side room is wet, so it must have been cleaned when we went out to eat. The two of you were tempted by money and killed and dismembered people. Your crimes are unforgivable. You two should wait for the guillotine."

The two men were tied up tightly and thrown into the side room of the kitchen, along with two large wooden basins.

When Tang San was searching for the murder weapon in the kitchen, he found the bodies of two black dogs that had been frozen stiff under the compartment window.

The more the facts are concealed, the more destructive the rebound will be after they are exposed.

This is what they call "Misfortunes sent by Heaven can be avoided, but those brought upon oneself cannot be escaped!"

Let them spend the night with the body parts.
