Chapter 8: Emerald Collar
Leaving a few sailors to guard the ship, Barto led Bob and some sailors off the ship.
"Hurry up, hurry up, we've reached the shore, your good days are coming." Bob shouted.
Colin and Nora followed the slaves in a line and walked towards the island. They saw that besides the ship he had taken, there was another larger merchant ship beside the pier. The sailors on the ship were carrying some goods. Further away, there seemed to be some small boats fishing?
On the left and right sides are towering wooden lookout towers with soldiers standing on lookout inside. On the east side of the dock is a row of wooden houses where people are moving some goods.
A group of spearmen patrolling back and forth were wearing leather vests, and the leader was wearing an iron half-armor. They all looked very mighty and strong.
At this time, a group of people came from a distance, led by an elder who wore a wide-brimmed pointed hat and a gray robe. He walked towards them with flowing steps.
"Lord Gandalf, I'm finally here. It hasn't been easy along the way." Barto shouted before Gandalf on the opposite side could say anything.
"Well, Barto, you didn't arrive as scheduled. I guess something must have happened to you. Tell me about it," Gandalf asked.
As Barto walked towards the island, he narrated: "Damn Jack, he intercepted me in Holtz Strait a few days ago and caused a lot of damage."
"Do you think we can increase the price of these slaves a little bit?" Barto asked, rubbing his hands.
"Bator, we agreed on this at the beginning. It's not appropriate to raise the price at will." Gandalf replied.
"If it weren't for the development of the Emerald Isle, would I, a mid-level magic apprentice, bargain with you, a slave trader?" Gandalf thought.
"Master Gandalf, my ship was also damaged. I spent a lot of time repairing it but it is still passable. I need a major overhaul when I return to Auckland Port. Please add more."
Gandalf thought about it and finally agreed. After all, the island was short of manpower. Although many welfare decrees were issued, they could not attract many free people. The original knight territory had been assigned to others, and not many farmers in the territory were willing to come. Buying slaves through Battor was not a one-time deal, so he had to rely on this guy. He would settle the loss later.
"Lord Gandalf, you are so generous. All the stars in the sky are not even one tenth as generous as you." Barto praised happily.
Gandalf held his forehead and felt a headache. It was too much and really embarrassing.
"Okay, let's go with the original price, which will be increased by 8%. You can arrange for someone to get the payment from me later."
"Okay, okay." Barto replied.
"Bator, you have to make a few more trips. As you can see, our island is not small and we are short of people. We will take as many as you bring." Gandalf said.
Barto's eyes rolled, "Hey, business is here, and we can make a lot of money."
"Don't worry, Lord Gandalf. A few days ago, I heard that the Duchy and the Burgundian Duchy won several battles and captured several counties. There is no shortage of slaves."
"That's good, Barto. Come to the castle's dinner party tonight. The Baron also wants to meet you," Gandalf invited.
"It is my pleasure to praise His Excellency Baron Richard August," Barto replied humbly.
"Knight Gary, take over from Barto and settle the slaves. Remember to have them wash themselves several times and make sure they don't bring any diseases to the island." Gandalf ordered.
"Yes." Gary nodded in response.
"Bator, I have a meeting here, so I'll leave first. See you at the dinner." After saying that, Gandalf left without waiting for Barto's reply.
Barto thought, "…Isn't it just a few more orders? Why am I so unpopular?"
"This way, Barto." Gary guided Barto towards the island.
……
After arriving on the island, Colin and Nora separated. After all, there are differences between men and women, and the island is not an island country, so they are not allowed to bathe together.
It took a while to wash with the other male slaves. Although the water was relatively cold, it felt much more comfortable than not having the chance to wash on the boat. After all, I hadn't taken a bath for more than 20 days and my body had already gone bad.
Colin looked around. Although he was not even 15 years old, he felt that his body was well developed. At least among the male slaves around him, none was more muscular than himself. Colin was still very satisfied with this body.
After washing their bodies, they were quickly arranged to live in a large bunk bed filled with water. There were about twenty able-bodied men and about thirty old, weak and sick people. These were the remaining male slaves.
"There are probably about 200 female slaves there. I wonder if Nora can get used to it there?" Colin thought as he lay on the big bunk.
Not long after, the sound of soldiers coming over was heard, calling for dinner.
When they arrived at the dining area, they saw rows of long wooden tables and benches on both sides. Colin followed the crowd forward.
"It feels like I'm back in the college cafeteria..." Colin thought as he walked.
Dinner consisted of black bread and a thick soup mixed with bran and minced fish, and a piece of salt fish.
"Well, it's better than on the boat," Colin thought as he ate.
"Brother Colin." Nora sat over.
"Well, Nora, are you okay?" Colin looked at Nora and said.
"It's okay. The aunts are all nice, but I'm not familiar with them yet. I also met a friend, Benny." Nora replied.
"Since you have new friends, get along well with them. We just arrived and don't know anyone. It's good to make more friends." Colin instructed.
"I know, brother." Nora replied softly.
Looking at Nora's cute appearance, Colin liked her sincerely, "It's great to have a girl like this."
……
"Is it about time, Bob?" Barto asked.
"Yes, sir."
"Do you think my clothes are decent?" Barto continued to ask.
"Nothing could be more suitable, sir," replied Bob.
Barto pointed at Bob and said, "Hey, kid...when you're ready, just follow me into the castle."
……
"Lilibet, how are the dinner preparations going?" Richard August asked his beloved wife Elizabeth Cavendish August gently.
"Darling, the preparations are almost done. The food is still very rich. I believe that Barto will be quite satisfied after floating on the sea for almost a month. However, there is not much wine left. We need to buy some more when we have the chance." Lilibet replied kindly. (To avoid people complaining about cheating on the word count, Elizabeth Cavendish August uses the nickname Lilibet in informal occasions)
"Okay, let's go downstairs. It's not a good habit to keep guests waiting." After that, Richard took Lilibet's hand and walked towards the restaurant together.
