Chapter 22: Invasion from the Grassland

Principality of Denton - Northern Prairie Border

Since Tiele consulted the great elder, the purpose of this trip south has become clearer. The fat man in the south (Justin) is very annoying. Recently, the scouts of both sides on the border have fought several times without a clear winner. There has been no latest news on the progress of the battle between the Principality of Denton and the Principality of Burgundy.

But the arrow was on the string and had to be shot. After reviewing the warriors of the tribe for the last time and looking at the young faces, Tiele made up his mind and gave the order to invade the Principality of Denton at midnight.

I don’t know how many warriors will come back from this invasion. Tiele sighed in his heart, but as a leader, he considered more the interests of the entire tribe. If he didn’t consume some warriors of the tribe, when there was really not enough food, the turmoil and losses caused would not be much less than the invasion from the south.

……

Tiger Corps camp.

"Captain, I think the Igle tribe on the opposite side is determined to invade our country. The scouts of both sides have fought many times recently. And judging from the number of soldiers who have scouted, our side is less than the other side. Will it be possible..." the attendant reported.

"What are you afraid of? Having more people doesn't guarantee victory. The people in the northern grasslands are short of food and clothing, and their weapons and equipment are also very scarce. In a head-on confrontation, they won't gain any advantage." Justin Howard said nonchalantly.

"But we can't take it lightly. Arrange the soldiers to strengthen defense and be ready to fight at any time." Justin ordered.

……

That night, two kilometers outside the Tiger Corps camp.

The Igle tribe was very well prepared and sent out five times the number of scouts to ensure that no one escaped and silently wiped out the Tiger Legion's sentinels.

"Chief, if we go any further, we will definitely be discovered." said a warrior of the tribe.

At this point, there was no need to hide, just launch the attack. Tiele told Bater (the chief warrior of the tribe): "After the tribe launches the attack, you will lead 3000 warriors, one man with two horses, to the rear, burn their granaries and then retreat."

Battelle took the order and went down to prepare.

Tiele calmed himself down, waved his hand and gave an order: "Attack, target the Tiger Legion camp."

……

Because of the advantage of being located on the grassland, the tribe has never lacked horses, which enabled every tribal warrior to have extraordinary riding skills. Although it was night, the visibility was not low under the moonlight and stars, and it did not affect the speed of the horses at all. Soon, the warriors in front engaged in battle with the Tiger Legion.

……

Tiger Regiment.

Although Justin Howard acted as if he didn't care during the day, he had been in the army for a long time and could not afford to be careless, so he did not sleep very soundly. As soon as the Igle tribe attacked, he woke up and immediately called his attendant to make arrangements to meet the enemy.

There are no large cities on the northern border of the Principality of Denton. The Tiger Legion has been camping in the wild. The logistics and quartermaster department is located in the small northern city of Purinton, less than 20 kilometers away from the legion camp. There are relatively few residents in the city, but there are many merchants from all over the place. Because the Tiger Legion is nearby, there are not many city defense troops, only 500 people, and there are only more than 200 on duty that night.

……

When Bater led the warriors of the Igle tribe to advance to 100 meters away from the city of Purinton, the city defense army discovered the enemy attack. By the time they sounded the alarm, it was too late. With only 200 people, they could not stop the sudden attack of 5000 people.

The city was in flames and the shouts of killing were deafening, but Bater did not loot too many shops. Instead, he went straight to his destination - the Tiger Corps' Quartermaster Department, leaving behind necessary men to guard the retreat route. Bater soon found the Quartermaster Department.

Rockets flew into the granary of the commissary department with "whoosh, whoosh". Richie had only about 100 guards with him and had no time to rescue food. Thanks to the guards' desperate counterattack, Richie was able to escape from the city of Plympton.

……

Tiger Regiment - Main Camp

The fight between the two sides was very fierce, and the warriors of the Igle tribe had already broken into the camp. Although they were not well prepared at the beginning, the good quality of the soldiers of the Tiger Corps allowed them to quickly form small squares to resist the warriors of the Igle tribe.

Captain Justin was also leading his men in the fight. The grassland warriors who rushed over were basically no match for him. They were as neat and tidy as cutting fresh fruits. While fighting, Justin frowned as he watched the battle situation around him. He was not afraid of a head-on fight, but he was worried about the food and grass in the rear.

Looking at Tiele in the distance, the phalanx in the army was struggling to resist Tiele's attack. "It's not the right time yet. I'll fight you later." Justin thought.

Justin casually chopped down the last grassland warrior beside him, and ordered the guards around him: "Take a small team and go to the city of Purinton behind. Make sure Richie strengthens the defense and does not lose any food and grass."

……

Before the guards left the back door of the camp, they saw Richie, wounded, returning to the camp with three guards. Soon, the guards led Richie to meet Justin.

"Why did you come back? You are covered with wounds." Justin asked anxiously.

"Captain..., the granary is on fire. It's the Igle tribe. There are thousands of people. I really can't resist..." Richie said frustratedly.

Justin felt dizzy when he heard Richie's words.

We can't think of anything else now, nor can we let the soldiers know about this. The most urgent task is to reorganize the army and drive out the people of the Igle tribe, and then we can plan other things.

……

The sky was turning pale. After a night of fighting, both the warriors of the grassland and the warriors of the principality were exhausted. Soon, the warriors of the Igle tribe withdrew from the Tiger Legion camp in an orderly manner.

After counting the losses, the direct loss was 6000 soldiers. Because the Igle tribe took away the bodies of the dead soldiers before retreating, there is no accurate statistics on the exact number of losses on the other side, but it must have been at least 5000.

For a legion of 50,000 people, the casualties of a few thousand soldiers are a trivial matter, but the shortage of food will soon cause adverse effects.

"Rich, you can't rest yet. You have to hurry up. First, contact the merchants in Princeton City to see who can get food as soon as possible. Second, contact the merchants in the country to transport a batch of food as soon as possible." Justin ordered.

He then instructed the attendant beside him, "Later, I will write a letter of apology, and you arrange for someone to send it back to the capital."

Without paying much attention to the losses in the camp, Justin soon gave the order to retreat and prepared to retreat to the vicinity of the city of Plympton to set up camp again and rely on the city for defense.

Although the loss was not small, the purpose of the Tiger Corps going north was to defend against the grassland tribes from going south. As long as the main force was not lost, the grassland tribes would not be able to bypass them and go south to the principality. I think the admonition of the king's capital would not be too severe. Thinking of this, Justin was not too worried.
