Chapter 108. Harvesting Mushrooms in the Village

Time flies by like a white horse passing by, and in the blink of an eye it is mid-October in the golden autumn.

The village was particularly lively this morning, with every household busy picking their own mushrooms and sending them to the brigade headquarters.

Under the cover of night, everything was pitch black, but the daughter-in-law of some unknown family had exceptionally good eyesight and could actually recognize the person opposite her in this pitch-black environment.

She put down the pair of baskets full of mushrooms on her shoulders and greeted her with joy: "Oh, Sister Zhou, your mushrooms are growing really well this time!"

"Of course not, I'm taking good care of it!" Upon hearing this, the villager called Mrs. Zhou also put down her burden, walked forward to pick up the basket of the person who had just spoken to her and looked at it. She couldn't help but exclaimed, "Oh, yours is also very good!"

"Haha, let's go together." The young wife invited enthusiastically.

"Okay." Mrs. Zhou agreed happily, and the two of them chatted and laughed as they headed towards the brigade headquarters together.

Outside the brigade

At this moment, torches were lit everywhere, illuminating the area in front of the brigade office.

"Don't be anxious, come one by one. I guarantee that you can all be loaded onto the truck today! Line up and don't push!" The village chief's voice was loud and full of joy.

"Village chief, this won't do! I have to squeeze forward, otherwise what should I do if I don't have room to put my things in?" Mrs. Zhou didn't listen to the village chief's words at all. She picked up the basket anxiously and rushed forward.

"Hey! Why don't you listen to any advice at all, woman?" Seeing this, the village chief cursed with a helpless look.

Uncle Tang was quick to take Mrs. Zhou's basket and handed it to the village accountant Chen to weigh it and record the weight in a notebook.

Then he carefully placed it flat on the wooden board. Then he took the basket from another family.

"Sister-in-law, why are you so anxious? The village chief has already sent Brother Guofu to drive the ox cart over there. I'm sure all the things will be loaded today!" Uncle Tang saw that Sister-in-law Zhou did not leave after putting the baskets away, but stood aside to join in the fun, so he spoke up and reminded the people around him.

"I know, I know." When Mrs. Zhou heard this, she nodded happily in response.

As time went by, more and more people gathered around the two ox carts. These were the villagers who had delivered their baskets but did not leave immediately.

Before long, Uncle Tang's carriage and Tang Guofu's oxcart were filled with goods, stacked three layers high. To prevent the goods from falling or being exposed to wind and rain, they even wove a layer of straw mats to cover the top.

"Uncle village chief, it looks like no one else will come here, right?" Uncle Tang San turned around and asked.

The village chief looked up at the sky. It was just beginning to get slightly brighter. Based on experience, he judged that it was around seven o'clock in the morning.

"Well, probably no one is here. I told everyone last night to get here before dawn."

"In that case, I won't wait any longer. If anyone else comes later, please tell him to take the things directly to the supply and marketing cooperative in town." After saying that, Uncle Tang tightened the reins of the ox cart, ready to set off at any time.

The villagers watching around watched Uncle Tang and Tang Guofu drive away slowly in their ox carts, their faces filled with smiles. After watching them go farther and farther away, everyone dispersed with satisfaction.

The village chief stayed where he was, staring at the empty space in front of the brigade office. After confirming that everything was correct, he walked into the brigade office with joy.
