Reborn in the 60s and adopted
Chapter 1 Becoming a Little Girl
"Meimei, Tangmei, wake up." Tangmei was shaken hard and felt dizzy. Memories that did not belong to her emerged in her mind. She touched her temple, which was a little aching, and opened her eyes.
"What's wrong with me?" She clearly remembered that she had died of breast cancer, but just now she heard her doctor telling her nephew that the oxygen tube could be removed.
Tang Mei took the hand that was touching her temple, and suddenly, she was shocked. Uh, how come this hand has become so small and thin, it looks like only bones are left! Could it be that she was lucky enough to be reborn? Wow, that's great!
In her previous life, Tang Mei was a "crazy girl" who grew up in the countryside. Every day, she either helped her parents with farm work or gossiped with the little sisters in the village. She had no interest in studying at all.
After graduating from junior high school, Tang Mei didn't want to study anymore, so she followed her fellow villagers to a coastal city and joined a rotten apple electronics processing factory, working in the chemical workshop. Within two years, she became ill every spring because she inhaled too many chemicals, and had to receive intravenous drips when the disease was serious.
With such a weak body, she couldn't make as much money as others, so Tang Mei had to return to her hometown in a small county with a dirty face and found a job selling second-hand houses. But because she couldn't stand the dirty hands and hidden rules of the newcomers, she had to keep changing jobs.
Finally, they were urged to get married by their parents. Since they couldn't make much money anyway, they just got married. As a result, their lives became a mess. They both lay down and lived off their parents. In the end, they divorced and lived alone, which seemed peaceful.
When I attended a class reunion many years later, I found that many of my classmates were successful in various fields, while I was still struggling at the bottom of society.
Only then did she realize the gap, so she signed up for various interest classes and learned a lot. Unfortunately, before she could show her talents, she got cancer and then she died. Alas, Tang Mei thought about her ridiculous life, which ended in such a muddle.
"Meimei, you fainted from hunger just now! I was so worried that you wouldn't wake up. Did your mother not give you food this morning?" Tang Mei was shaken back to her senses by the little girl in front of her. The little girl was about 5 years old, and was the original owner's cousin, named Tang Li. The eldest uncle died when Tang Li was a little over one year old. The eldest aunt worked hard to raise the two children by earning work points, and the family was extremely poor.
The little girl had yellow hair tied in two braids. Her face was only the size of a palm, not very fleshy, but her eyes were big and bright. She was small, wearing a navy blue dress that didn't fit her well and had many patches on it.
"Well, I didn't eat this morning." The original owner got up at 5 o'clock in the morning, carrying a large backpack and going up the mountain to look for edible wild grasses while Tang Ma was cursing. The original owner, who hadn't eaten for a few days, staggered and fell on a rock on the side of the road. The original owner was gone, and she came.
"Your mother is going too far. Just because you don't agree to be adopted by your third uncle, she cuts off your food rations." Tang Li's eyes were full of dissatisfaction with Tang Mei's mother.
"Sister, don't be angry, let's go pick wild vegetables." Tang Mei tugged at Tang Li's sleeve, lowered her head and spoke in a low voice. She was going to use the shameless trick of pretending to be stupid so that Tang Li would not see that she had changed her mind.
"Meimei, you, hey, let's go." After saying that, Tang Li took Tang Mei's backpack and helped her up the hillside.
Tang Mei saw a hillside in front of her. There were no weeds or dense forests, only rocks and bare trees. How could she pick wild vegetables?
"Sister, what should we do if there are no wild vegetables?"
"Meimei, don't worry. Let's go to the top of the mountain. I know where there are broad beans. There were two sweet potatoes at home this morning, and I should have saved them to bring to you." Tang Li took Tang Mei to the top of a mountain, where they could see the river. Behind it was a slope, adjacent to the land of another brigade. No one was reclaiming the land at the moment, so it was all weeds and looked quite secluded.
"Sister, where is this?" Little Tangmei had come here with the village aunt to pick pig grass, but had never been to this area. The adults said it was very dangerous here and that if you were not careful you would fall into the river.
"This is a place that others dare not come to for fear of falling. But I know there are a few broad bean seedlings nearby. You can pick them and eat them, but don't take them back," said Tang Li.
"Okay!" Tang Mei thought, I won't be able to eat it if I take it back, I guess my mother will feed it to the chickens. Tang Mei picked the broad bean leaves and stuffed them into her mouth, and a grassy taste with a bitter taste spread in her mouth. It was really unpalatable, but at least it comforted my stomach.
"Sister, shall we go back?" Tang Mei asked Tang Li.
"Sit down for a while. If you go back now, Second Aunt might assign you endless work to do and not even give you food. How are you going to live in the future? Why don't you go to Third Uncle's house? Third Uncle is a good man and treats us kids well."
Tang Li frowned, and her worried look warmed Tang Mei's heart, and the strange feeling she had just felt when she first came here suddenly disappeared. She could not help but lean back against the stone and began to plan for the future.
Tang Mei is now in 1963, the last year of the worst famine in history, the 60s. She is in the Bayi Brigade in a mountain valley in a small county town under Province C.
The temperature at the beginning of this spring was ridiculously high, and not a drop of rain fell. The spring planting season was approaching, and the whole village was not rich. All the food was the remaining grain after the village paid the public grain. In this era of relying entirely on labor, a family of almost a dozen people had that little food, and it was not enough to eat.
The third branch of the Tang family is considered to be relatively well-off in the village. The old man passed away in the turmoil a few years ago, and the Tang family had long since split up.
Tang Li is the daughter of the eldest wife. Her father died of starvation a few years ago in order to save food for his children. Now only the eldest aunt Yao Feng is left in the eldest wife's family, living a hard life with her 13-year-old cousin Tang Jianguo and 5-year-old Tang Li.
The second branch of the Tang family is one of the few wealthy families in the village. Tang's father, Tang Yongfang, is a famous bamboo craftsman. He and Tang's third uncle, Tang Yongli, are busy with work for each household. People in the surrounding villages all recognize Tang's father's skills in weaving bamboo baskets and making mats.
Tang Mei's mother, Wang Shuzhen, is 13 years younger than Tang's father. Tang's mother's parents died in the war when she was young. She was despised by other relatives in the family and was abandoned to starve to death in the mountains. Tang's grandmother passed by and kindly brought her back to be the child bride of the Tang family. Tang Mei's mother has been very close to Tang Mei's father since she was a child, and Tang's father also doted on her very much. He waited until Tang Mei's mother grew up and the two got married.
Tang Mei's father can now earn 2 yuan a day, which is considered a relatively wealthy family in the village. Except for the money he gave to the brigade as work points, the rest was given to Tang Mei's mother.
Tang Mei's mother gave birth to two girls. The eldest daughter, Tang Shu, was twelve years old. Her birth met the expectations of Tang's father and mother. Even though she was not a boy, she was very popular with her parents. However, Tang Mei's birth caused Tang's mother to experience a difficult labor and heavy bleeding, and she almost died. Therefore, Tang's mother hated Tang Mei to the extreme.
The third uncle and aunt of the Tang family had never had their own children. Perhaps because of this, their lives were relatively smooth in these troubled years. Tang Mei's mother really didn't want to face the daughter who almost cost her her life every day, so she thought of adopting Tang Mei to Tang's third uncle's family.
