Devour

Chapter 4: Wilderness Hunter

We set out early in the morning. The area nearby is located on a plateau, so it was smooth sailing downhill.

Cheng Bai traveled light, passed through the grassland, and walked into the woods, asking for directions from old tree spirits and flying swallows along the way. The secret art of communication helped him solve the communication problem well, and he guided the animals who knew the direction to help give directions.

"The Kaiyang Temple is in the east. Leave the Discipline Plateau, pass the Long Snake River, the Crooked Neck Plain, and cross the Wild Horse Ridge. When you see the city, the largest building is the Kaiyang Temple."

Cheng Bai asked for directions clearly, determined the direction, and set off with big strides, his feet moving quickly and fearlessly forward.

When we arrived at the Changshe River, it was getting dark.

The Yaoguang Temple is located on a high place, and you can see part of this long river from afar. It spans thousands of miles, and when it flows from the plateau to the east, it splits into two rivers. The tributary that lies between the Discipline Plateau and the Crooked Neck Plain is the Changshe River, and the main stream that turns to the north to estuary is called the Changshou River.

There are many species living in the Long Snake River. The more troublesome ones include the evil water ghost and the green water tiger, but they are all minnows and crab generals and are not worth mentioning. The strongest overlord of the river is the Hydra.

Although it is said to have nine heads, in fact only old and ancient purebred Hydras have nine heads. Such monsters are rarely seen.

Most of the snake monsters that dominate the river have three heads. They are also very strong, with a body several meters long, comparable to that of dinosaurs, and much stronger than blue-faced spiders. Just by looking at their sturdy and large bodies, you can tell that they are not easy to mess with, and it is best to avoid them.

The widest part of Changshe River is over a hundred meters wide, and the narrowest part is only a few dozen meters wide. There are huge rocks in some shallow sections of the river, and the water flow is slightly turbulent.

Cheng Bai looked around the shore again and again, found a narrow section of the river covered with huge pebbles, estimated the distance and landing point, and wanted to jump over.

Just as he stood firm on the huge rock in the river, his feet suddenly moved. It turned out to be an old black turtle with a back shell that looked like a huge black rock lying on the rock to take a rest.

"Young people nowadays are so ignorant. They always step on old people." The old black tortoise complained angrily.

Cheng Bai was amused when he heard this, and asked hurriedly, "So, has anyone passed by here recently? Where did they go?"

The old black tortoise was surprised and said, "You can understand what I say? There are not many people who can understand tortoise language. They went east."

"What kind of person is he?" Cheng Bai decided to get to the bottom of it.

The old black tortoise said unhappily, "A bunch of crooked-necked people."

Cheng Bai asked for clarification, corrected the direction of advance, and asked the old black turtle to carry him across the Long Snake River in exchange for the two spider legs he carried with him.

We camped by the river at night and barbecued the green water tigers we had just hunted.

This beast looks like both a dog and a tiger, has thick fur, and is good at catching fish and crabs in the water. Its strength is slightly higher than that of the blue-faced spider.

The key to dealing with it is to wait for it to come ashore and wait for an opportunity to assassinate it. Cheng Bai is very familiar with the job. After finishing the job, he selects the best pieces of meat, takes them out to cook, sprinkles them with green onions and garlic, and pours rice wine on them. The meat tastes fresh and delicious.

There are also small jade-like crystals in the belly of the green water tiger, which are green in color. Strictly speaking, the creature that condenses such crystals is not an ordinary beast, but a demon beast.

Ordinary wild beasts are afraid of fire, but powerful monsters are often not among them.

Cheng Bai had just finished his meal when a gigantic monster with its neck raised, over 4 meters tall and 7 meters long from head to tail, slowly approached with its thick legs. It was a three-headed snake attracted by the smell of meat and walked towards the campsite with saliva drooling.

Cheng Bai stood up, charged forward and leaped up, hitting one of its three heads with his Muffled Pig Head.

The three-headed snake shook its head, not suffering any serious damage, and raised its head to spit poisonous mist at Cheng Bai.

Cheng Bai hurriedly held his breath and dodged, then retreated a dozen steps back to his original place, grabbed the remaining water tiger skeleton, internal organs, and cooked meat, and threw them at the three-headed snake.

The three heads each grabbed the food, swallowed it whole, and slowly retreated away from the campsite. They were obviously quite intelligent. If they continued to fight, neither side would necessarily gain anything, so it was better to just satisfy their own needs.

At night, Cheng Bai climbed up a tree more than ten meters high to take a rest and looked up at the starry sky. The sky was full of twinkling stars in the night, bringing people endless reverie.

Cheng Bai thought about the distant Earth and his hometown in the past, and fell asleep unknowingly. The next day, he continued to head towards Kaiyang Temple.

The Crooked Neck Plain is eight hundred miles long and wide. There is no need to pave or build roads. It is a vast flat plain with fertile land, lush vegetation, and pleasant scenery. It is a good place for reproduction and survival.

Occasionally, a whistling plant can be seen growing on the plains. At first glance, it looks like a low shrub with fruits that look like hawthorns. When animals approach, the sudden whistle will scare them away.

Cheng Bai didn't care about its whistle and picked a lot of whistle fruits. They tasted sweet and sour and were delicious. Eating them improved his alertness.

Occasionally, you can see herds of running horses on the plains, and even rarer are the gray moon deer. They are all very alert and will quickly run away if they sense someone approaching.

Cheng Bai encountered the first heavy rain after arriving in the alien continent on the plain. There was nowhere to take shelter and he was soaked like a drowned chicken.

Cheng Bai had no choice but to take a bath in the rain, and after the rain, he took off all his clothes and hung them out to dry. It was great, he could save himself from doing laundry.

Fortunately, a gray moonlight deer came into his sight. This was the strongest monster seen in the plains. It was taller and stronger than ordinary deer, bigger than a horse, and agile, especially in the moonlight.

Cheng Bai once tried to sneak up on it and assassinate it, but unfortunately the Gray Moonlight Deer stretched out its ears, sniffed, became alert, and ran away.

This time, Cheng Bai approached naked and barefoot in stealth, and the unlucky gray moonlight deer failed to alert in time and was hit hard on the forehead.

The gray moonlight deer was still staggering and had not yet fallen to the ground. Cheng Bai quickly entered invisible state again and hit it with a stick before knocking the big guy down.

Light a fire to keep warm, drive away the cold, and dry clothes, and today's food is solved.

The fur of the gray moonlight deer is beautiful. Cheng Bai used the small knives collected in the palace and took great pains to get the complete fur off and preserve it, hoping to make a deerskin coat.

The whistle fruit is very suitable for venison. The meat has excellent flavor and is more delicious than spider meat and water tiger meat. The slices taken out are also larger, silvery white in color, and more moist.

After Cheng Bai had eaten, he would find a safe and clean place to lie down, slowly put on dry clothes, look up at the night sky, stretch his muscles, and live a carefree and comfortable life as a hunter of moonlight deer every day.

His complexion was crystal clear and he could control all the strength in his body freely, which was significantly different from when he first came to the alien continent a dozen days ago. The delicious food and diligent practice made his strength grow rapidly to a new stage.

Traveling eastward while hunting, on the fourth day after entering the plains, Cheng Bai encountered a group of extremely vicious criminals riding horses and lined up in a row in front of him.

The leader held a four-foot broadsword in his hand, tilted his neck and shouted, "I opened this road, I planted this tree, if you want to pass this way, you must leave money to buy your life."

Cheng Bai was stunned and said, "You are robbers."

"How dare you! We are the suburban affairs director of Crooked Plains. If you dare to slander us, you will be sued."

A man nearby shouted angrily upon hearing this and raised a strange axe. The head was in the shape of a human head, and the axe blade was inlaid in the roughly sculpted mouth. The joints felt small and easy to break.

Cheng Bai had been looking forward to interacting with the people here, but he was disappointed when he saw this. He said contemptuously, "If you want to rob in an official manner, you have to have the ability to do this."

The crooked-necked swordsman in the lead gave the order: "Go and take him down, and skin him clean."

The thug holding the human head axe was overjoyed when he heard the order. He tilted his neck and shouted, "As you command," and urged his horse to rush forward.

The old horse under his crotch was reluctant, hummed twice, and trotted at a leisurely pace.

Cheng Bai swung up the mace, jumped up and hit the guy with the pot.

The man with the human head axe tried to raise his axe to block, but the axe blade fell off on the spot. He let out a strange cry and fell off his horse, with one foot caught in the stirrup and unable to free himself.

The old horse suddenly became cheerful, neighing loudly, and galloped away dragging the man with the axe head. The man screamed in pain, and there was a trail of blood behind the horse's tail. It was obvious that he was dead.

The crooked-necked swordsman was furious and shouted, "He who dared to murder the head of suburban affairs shall be punished with the death of all his clans. Kill him now."

More than ten people holding strange-looking axes, shoe-like broadswords, and dog-legged broadscimitars rushed over following the crooked-necked swordsman.

Cheng Bai sneered, "You dare to rob people on the road with such little ability?" He entered the assassination mode, his power doubled, wielding the mace, hitting the bandits accurately, making them heartbroken and falling to the ground dead one after another, leaving only the scattered horses to graze.

Seeing that the situation was not good, the crooked-necked swordsman shouted, "Sir, stop it. Could it be that the master of the Disaster Legion who came down from the Discipline Plateau ahead has such a secret technique? The flood washed away the Dragon King Temple, and family members no longer recognize each other."
