The Guide to the End of the World: Four Sentinels Compete for Favor

Chapter 31: In the face of natural disasters, take care of yourself

Ai Wanxin opened the door, and Pei Junlin smiled harmlessly: "Baby, I'm so hungry, is there anything to eat?"

He walked into the house as he spoke, and Yin Yanhan followed him in, turning into the guest bathroom and washing his hands as if he knew the place well.

Ai Wanxin took out some cakes, fried dough sticks, buns, soy milk and wontons that she had bought at Qinghe Market and placed them on the table.

She didn't ask what the two men had done to Zhang Yunshen. The social order had not collapsed yet, and they were two civilized people and couldn't kill anyone. A beating would be enough.

And she didn't want Zhang Yunshen to die now.

In his previous life, Zhang Yunshen was just an ordinary person. Without her, it would have been impossible for him to break out of the city with a very high density of zombies.

Ai Wanxin didn't kill Zhang Yunshen now because she wanted him to have a taste of being eaten alive by zombies.

Pei Junlin also washed his hands and came out. Ai Wanxin asked, "Has your sister eaten?"

"I'll bring some back for her later."

He picked up a dough stick with his bare hands: "Baby, it seems that things are really developing as you said. What are your plans next?"

"Just get through this month first, I have arrangements for the future." It's too early to tell them about the sentinel guides now. Everything will become clear once they get through the mutation period.

"Okay, baby. I'll do as you say." Pei Junlin said obediently.

Ai Wan turned to Yin Yanhan and said, "Brother Han, the water level in the community has also risen. It must be even higher in the city. How is the hospital?"

"Everything is safe now. The hospital has its own warehouse and generator." Yin Yanhan said simply.

After breakfast, Ai Wanxin put away the furniture in the living room, and Yin Yanhan practiced Sanda with her for a while.

Pei Junlin brought some food to Pei Momo, then came back and cooked obediently in the kitchen.

While humming a song, he packed the cooked rice pot by pot into transparent storage boxes.

Energy will be very scarce in the future, so while the water, electricity and gas are still running smoothly now, it would be better to do more. These were Ai Wanxin's instructions, so he just did as he was told.

While they were busy preparing for the end of the world, the scene on the first floor was completely different.

"Stop moving, stop moving, let's go!" Shi Bin was immersed in knee-deep flood, pulling the old man's skinny wrist bones, trying to throw away the pile of rags in his hand.

The old man lived in Room 101, Building B. He was 70 years old and wore plain cloth. His house was filled with rags he had picked up. Now that it was soaked by the flood, there was nowhere to step.

Shi Bin had already helped the old man to the stairs. When he turned around to call 102, he went back to the house tremblingly to move things out.

The water was just up to his ankles at that time. By the time he moved a pile of junk out and returned to the house, the water had risen to his knees.

Although the old man is thin, he is very strong. Shi Bin took a lot of effort to throw away the rags in his hand.

The old man angrily scolded: "I don't want you to care about me. I have lost my home. I am an old man, so I'd rather die."

Shi Bin carried the old man on his back and walked out in a mixture of water and debris.

It was close to the autumnal equinox and it had rained heavily for several days in a row. Sometimes there was hail at night and the weather was already very cold.

However, Shi Bin's slightly bald forehead was covered with beads of sweat.

The old man slapped him on the back of his head and said, "My son doesn't care whether I live or die, why should I live? Put me down."

Shi Bin's head buzzed, and he was almost knocked unconscious by the old man. He stopped and took a rest, then said in a hoarse voice, "Master, I beg you, when the rain stops, I will catch your son and bring him to you to kowtow and admit his fault, okay?"

When they reached the door, Huang Xiaochi also jumped into the water to help. The two of them, one carrying the other supporting him, finally managed to get the old man to the stairs.

Shi Bin leaned against the corner and took a long time to catch his breath before he recovered.

Room 102 was occupied by a young couple who were much more skillful and had packed two large bags from home, which contained valuable items such as computers, tablets, and jewelry.

They stood in the middle of the stairs on the first floor and didn't want to leave their house just like that. Maybe the water wouldn't continue to rise?

After Shi Bin had caught his breath, Huang Xiaochi said worriedly, "Old Shi, what should we do now? We can't get through to 119."

"We are trapped in the corridor now. One or two days is fine. If we stay for more than that, we will either freeze to death or starve to death."

Shi Bin also thought of this problem. He sat up and asked the old man in 101 and the young couple in 102: "Do you know anyone upstairs? Is there anyone you can stay with? I don't think the water will recede anytime soon."

The young couple looked at each other and shook their heads together.

Shi Bin also knew that he was asking unnecessary questions, as the current neighborhood relationship was just strangers living close to each other.

Even if there is some friendship, it is impossible to accept others to live in your home during a natural disaster like this when you don't know when normal order will be restored.

He hesitated for a moment, then asked cheekily, "Do you have thick quilts and thick clothes at home? We will probably have to live in the corridor for a while."

In fact, there are more important things, that is, food and water, but Shi Bin really couldn't open his mouth. After all, it is ingrained in his bones that he cannot take a single needle or thread from the people.

The couple lowered their heads and discussed for a while, and the man nodded and said, "Yes, why don't we get some more things out before the water comes up?"

Shi Bin naturally would not refuse. He and Huang Xiaochi followed the man into the water again. In just a short while, the water had risen to their knees.

The three of them quickened their pace, but unfortunately the bedding and quilt on the bed and the rice box in the kitchen cabinet were all soaked.

Finally, the man opened the wardrobe, took down the clothes on the upper shelf that were not soaked in water, handed them to Shi Bin and Huang Xiaochi, and then let them go first.

Huang Xiaochi felt that he could still take it, but was pulled away by Shi Bin.

When they were out of the room, Huang Xiaochi asked, "Lao Shi, aren't we waiting for him?"

Shi Bin shook his head slightly and whispered, "When someone comes out, don't touch whatever they have."

Huang Xiaochi was stunned, nodded and said nothing more.

After a while, the man came out with a package wrapped in a bed sheet. His wife reached out to pull her husband before the two officers.

The man went up the steps and glanced at Shi Bin and Huang Xiaochi. Seeing them standing aside twisting their wet trouser legs, he put the package he was carrying between the two bags he and his wife had packed earlier, and then said to them:

"Two officers, my clothes should be wearable for you. Please change into them first. You must not catch a cold now."

"Brother, can you give me one too?" Prince Tang had just borrowed the man's cell phone to call home, but he couldn't get through to his parents, housekeeper, and driver's cell phones. He didn't remember any other phone numbers, so he was really trapped here.

The man agreed generously and took a pair of pants and gave it to the old man.

While the men were changing clothes, his wife went up one floor to avoid suspicion. When they were done changing clothes, the woman came down and said, "It's not a good idea for so many of us to be crowded here. Why don't we go up one floor? The higher we go, the safer it is."

No one had any objection. Shi Bin and Huang Xiaochi carried the bags of clothes, Prince Tang supported the old man, the woman carried one bag, and her husband carried two bags and walked upstairs.

The couple had a lot of stuff, so they walked and stopped, and slowly fell behind by one floor.

The man whispered to his wife, "We'll go to Building A from the corridor when we get to the 5th floor. We won't be with them."

The four people in front obviously had nothing on them, and the man just stayed behind and grabbed a bag of food that was not soaked in water.

However, there were only some snacks, a few packets of instant noodles, some dry goods stuffed on the kitchen cupboard, and some vegetables and eggs in the refrigerator.

It's hard enough for the couple to feed themselves with these things, let alone divide them into four portions?

The wife nodded silently. They were all strangers, and the family had already done the most kindness by sharing their warm clothes with them. There was no reason to ask them to share food.

In the face of natural disasters, just take care of yourself.
