America 1881: Legend of the West
Chapter 272: Same race but different opinions
Crook was irritated.
He stood at the door of the camp, looking at the valley ahead.
Although his original plan was to make the Indians angry and then ask for payment, he didn't know where he offended the Santa Fe people.
The governor kept suing himself against the federal government, saying that he was inactive and sabotaged.
Wouldn't it be as easy to crush these Indians to death as to crush an ant to death?
But thinking about finally being able to bid farewell to the loess and cacti here and return to sunny California, Crook felt another sense of expectation in his heart.
Regardless, it's time to end.
Crook turned and returned to the camp, preparing for the final encirclement and suppression.
However, just as he was spreading the map on the box, his deputy opened the curtain of the tent and ran in.
"Captain, there's a telegram from Lincolnshire."
Crook frowned: "Telegram? From Washington?"
The deputy shook his head: "No, Santa Fe's."
It's Santa Fe again. Now that this place is mentioned, Crook has a headache: "Throw it aside. Let's first discuss how to fight this encirclement and suppression in the valley."
He pressed one side of the map and the other side rolled up, which made him even more irritated.
The adjutant held the other two corners for him and handed the telegram to Crook: "Sir, I suggest you take a look."
Crook was a little helpless. He smoothed the map and said, "You tell me, I'm listening."
"Congressman Scott's brother is dead," Adjutant Hui reported.
"Yeah." Crook didn't even raise his head. People die every day in New Mexico. What does this have to do with him.
"Killed by a gang of Mexican bandits at his Lincolnshire estate," the adjutant added, "and the estate was burned down."
"Then he should go to the Sheriff of Lincoln County." Crook leaned over and looked at the map carefully.
"But there are many Mexican gangs, and Congressman Scott hopes that our army can bring them to justice immediately." The adjutant glanced at the telegram and said.
"What a joke, when will it be his turn to order me?" Crook looked displeased, "My soldiers are used to protect the United States, not to avenge Scott."
The adjutant smiled bitterly.
Obviously, the old fox Scott has blocked their retreat.
"It is your duty, Captain, to immediately protect every American citizen in Lincoln County, where the people are being attacked by gangs," said the Adjutant, "and his brother, as one of the citizens of Lincoln County, has proven this. "
"My guess is that what he tells you now is what the governor will tell the president later."
Crook sighed.
Not only that, their tone of impeaching themselves in the federal government will only be worse.
He showed no sense of honor as a federal soldier, was arrogant and rude.
These politicians are very clever and can use their hats as they please.
"Where's their state militia?" Crook suddenly remembered this question and asked the adjutant.
The adjutant shook his head: "I don't know, but it seems that New Mexico has never mobilized a militia since we were here."
"Forget it, let's go back and clean up those Mexican scum first." Crook began to scroll the map, "It's only about a hundred miles anyway, and my cavalry will be there soon."
"What should we do here?" the adjutant said with a bit of regret, "We are about to wipe out those Indians, and Geronimo's myth is about to come to an end."
However, a smile appeared on Crook's face.
He rolled up the map and set it aside.
"His myth shouldn't exist in the first place. Soon, someone will send his head to me."
In the valley not far from Crook's Cavalry Camp, there was an Apache Indian camp.
Night fell.
Geronimo and his warriors were hiding in a cave.
There was almost no vegetation in this valley, so they didn't even dare to light a bonfire outside.
They knew that it was only a matter of time before Crook and his soldiers launched the final attack just outside the valley.
During this period of pursuit and interception, they were close to running out of ammunition and food. Most of the soldiers, including Luo Cen who came to support them, had injuries on their bodies.
"How many days has Tail been out?" Geronimo planted the ax on the ground and asked.
Luo Cen and the few soldiers around him, you look at me, I look at you.
They couldn't remember how many days it was like this.
"Is there no dry food left?" The chief stared at the bonfire, the firelight reflecting on his resolute face.
Now, the face is full of fatigue.
No one said a word.
Geronimo raised his head and looked around at the soldiers around him.
They followed the chief through life and death, believing in the Indian hero in front of them, but their faces were also expressionless because of hunger.
"Kill my horse." Geronimo handed the ax to a soldier beside him, "to satisfy everyone's hunger."
The war horse had been following him for many years, but he could not take action.
The soldier took the axe, and after being stunned for a few seconds, he shook his head hastily: "Chief, you can't kill the horse. If you kill the horse, we will have nothing!"
"If we don't kill, we will all starve to death." Geronimo closed his eyes. "Without horses, I will lead you to kill the enemy."
The soldier was still hesitating when a sound of footsteps came from outside the cave.
Everyone looked outside the cave and saw a group of people dressed as Indians, carrying guns, appearing at the entrance of the cave.
"It's Victorio and Coloradas. Aren't their tribes behind us? What are you doing here at the mouth of the valley?" Loczen became alert.
The two people Luo Cen mentioned were the leaders of the other two tribes. Out of respect for Geronimo's reputation, they each took dozens of warriors to participate in this operation.
But Crook defeated the Apache coalition.
After being driven into the valley, Geronimo led his tribal warriors to guard the entrance of the valley, while leaving the other two tribes stationed deeper in the valley.
Victorio and Coloradas walked into the cave and came to the side of the bonfire, and the people following them spread out along the cave wall.
Geronimo stood up.
"Dear Chief."
The two saluted Geronimo, and the chief returned the salute.
"What's the matter?" Geronimo asked.
Victorio's eyes were hesitant. He was thin and withered.
He was originally a witch doctor, but after the death of the leader of his tribe, he succeeded him as the chief.
Coloradas next to him was much more straightforward and attacked directly: "Chief, we respect you, but you promised us that if we follow you to fight, we can return to our homeland."
He pointed to the soldiers behind him: "Their families are waiting for them to go back, but where is our home?"
Geronimo was speechless for a moment.
On the other hand, Luo Cen snorted coldly: "No one is forcing you. If you want to leave, you can leave at any time."
"Loczen!" Geronimo stopped her from continuing.
But the words he spoke were like water being poured out, and the faces of the soldiers behind Coloradas showed a trace of confusion.
Cracks are inevitable.
"Then tonight, under the cover of darkness, my soldiers and I will cover your breakout." Geronimo looked at the two tribal leaders in front of him.
Victorio and Coloradas looked at each other.
"Perhaps we can have a better choice." Victorio, who was silent just now, spoke, "Can we make peace with those people outside?"
"Surrender?" Luo Cen glared at the Indian who was much older than her.
"No, it's not surrender, it's negotiation." Victorio shook his head slightly, "We can negotiate conditions with them, such as a better reservation area."
Geronimo smiled bitterly and said: "After all this time, don't you still understand what kind of person Crook is? As long as he agrees to this, will we still be fighting him?"
He was even a little unbelievable that these two people would not be so naive in his impression.
"That's right, we are all surrounded here. How can they talk to us? When have they fulfilled their promise?" said a young soldier next to Geronimo.
Victorio fell silent again.
However, Coloradas on the side showed a strange smile: "If it were just like this, the Americans would really not talk to us, but..."
He paused and stared at Geronimo:
"You are the condition of our negotiation!"
"Do it!"
With an order, Victorio and the soldiers from the Coloradas tribe raised their guns or bows almost at the same time.
Victorio himself quickly threw a poisoned dagger at Geronimo.
Seeing that the chief was about to be pierced by this dagger.
There was only a "clang" sound, and the dagger was knocked away by something.
At the same time as this sound, there was a gunshot.
In the dark night, about twenty horses suddenly appeared, and the one at the front had already rushed to the cave.
The man on the horse flew down and walked into the cave holding a shotgun.
In the firelight, Geronimo and his warriors saw his face clearly.
The brave man, Chen Jianqiu.
