Chapter 193 137 Workers’ Camp
"Who?"
"That person." Gray pointed secretly, it was the man who was drinking alone just now.
Fortes looked at him for a while and found nothing unusual, so he asked softly: "What's wrong with him?"
"He only ordered a light beer, which he drank too slowly for a worker," Gray said, "and this is the first time I've seen this guy."
This made Fords squint his eyes and look at the guy again, and then murmured.
"Really, then he will be... prohibition agent? Police? BOI?"
"Forget it, leave him alone."
"He may be here to assassinate you." Gray whispered.
"But now he has been discovered by you, hasn't he?" Mr. Fortes said, "Now he will not go so smoothly. I asked Nick to keep an eye on him. If he doesn't move, then we shouldn't move first."
Gray nodded.
Nothing happened next. Gray just wanted to report the situation. She stood up and planned to leave.
But what she didn't say was that her method of killing Hall was actually not secretive, and might even reveal her existence.
But that's okay.
Even if Gray is exposed, it won't affect Mr. Fortes' work too much, and he has more important things to do now.
……
"Through interviews, we can confirm that nearby residents heard gunshots around six o'clock last night." A police officer said.
"How many times?" Reese asked.
"It sounded like five or six times."
"Five or six sounds in a row?"
"Yes."
"That's right." Reese put on his gloves and raised the pistol.
"Mr. Hall's standard pistol was empty. It seems that this thing made the gunshot."
"Can you get fingerprints?" the police officer leaned over and asked.
"I don't know," Reese said truthfully, putting the pistol into an evidence bag.
A yellow cordon has been put up where Mr. Hall's body was found, and several police officers are standing around. No one dares to act alone now.
Reese had already inspected the body. There were two fatal injuries. One was on the throat, which seemed to be a laceration caused by a claw or a serrated object; the other was on the head, which was a gunshot wound.
"Judging from the position, the murderer probably tore Hall's neck open first. The latter fell to the ground and was shot again, hitting the head and dying."
"Then he emptied the pistol and left with another murder weapon." Reese analyzed.
"The gunshots were continuous, and there were traces of fractures on Hall's right hand, indicating that he was hit in the hand before he could shoot. The opponent's movements were very fast, almost crushing the D-class Hall."
"Don't even bother pretending, 'Angel'."
……
The closer he got to Hezhong Steel, the more Levi felt a strange atmosphere.
This feeling is difficult to explain clearly, perhaps it can be attributed to... a kind of underlying restlessness.
It's noon now, a short break from work. Workers can take advantage of this time to eat a few pieces of buttered bread, and some even have a few slices of luncheon meat.
Li Wei soon discovered that these workers were divided into two distinct groups. Some of them wore relatively clean uniforms and yellow helmets.
The other part...the other part of the people's colors are much messier, and the things they wear can't even be called clothes at all.
And even these people are divided into many factions.
The Rafis, the Gaoweis, the Seris... quite a few of the Seris workers looked at Levi, whose clean Chester coat looked extremely eye-catching in such an environment.
Li Wei turned around to look. Their faces were so blackened by the black charcoal and pulverized coal during steelmaking that he couldn't even see their eyes, but faintly, Li Wei could feel the envy buried deep within them.
This made Levi feel like he was an animal being watched by people, or a person being watched by animals.
So Levi had to lower his head and walk through the tall supports and the passage of the steel workshop.
The only one who came with him was Mr. Cruz. He looked around, suddenly stopped, and naturally handed a pack of cigarettes to one of the workers who was eating a sandwich at the table.
"Brother, we are reporters from the Golden Wind Newspaper and we want to ask something."
The worker took a deep look at the two of them. He obviously did not believe Mr. Cruise's clumsy lie, but Cruise also didn't care. The pack of Marlboro and the folded five-fee dollar on the cigarette box were the ones he handed out. focus.
The latter laughed and pulled up his hat.
"Are you the police? Don't panic. There are many police here during this time. Everyone is used to being questioned."
Cruise smiled: "It seems we are lagging behind."
"What do you want to ask?" the worker put away his cigarette and asked.
"How are you doing at work recently? United Steel is still implementing the twelve-hour work system. Aren't you dissatisfied with this?" Cruz asked like a reporter.
"Ha." The worker smiled, "Your news is indeed behind. Now the only people who need to work for twelve hours are the Gaowei people, the Seris people, and the Lafite people..."
"Are you treated differently?"
"Yes, I say it should have been like this a long time ago. The Gaowei people will not bring any good except taking our jobs and spreading the plague. They should all be driven out!" the worker spat.
"Do you know the Federation of Labor?" Cruz asked. "I think they were involved in the abolition of the twelve-hour work day."
"Of course." The worker became more energetic and said, "You guessed it right, it was Mr. Gompers who helped us fight for our rights."
"Mr. Gompers?" Cruise pretended not to know.
"He's a really intelligent man and he spoke to Mr Harrison a few days ago and, although I don't know what he said, the next day the company announced reduced hours."
"So amazing." Cruise smiled, "Do you know Mr. Fortes? He should be another leader."
"Him? He's just an idiot." The worker gritted his teeth and said, "Mr. Gompers told us that if we help him, all the benefits provided by the company will be withdrawn."
"I have only heard a little bit about him. It is said that he wants to order us to go on strike. Some people say that he wants to be the president of United Steel."
"Mr. Gompers is really fighting for a better life for us, but he is just daydreaming..."
……
Levi stood not far away waiting for him.
After a while, Mr. Cruise and the worker ended their conversation and walked over to join Levi.
"What do you think of what he said, Lee?"
Cruise asked softly as the two walked side by side.
"Me?" Levi pointed to himself.
"Ah."
"Mr. Harrison is deflecting conflicts and creating divisions among workers, making it difficult for them to gather strength," Levi said. "And once the Federation of Labor finally fails and disbands, I'm afraid the situation will return to what it was before."
"I think so too, but most people will be blinded by the immediate interests." Cruise said.
"This is a cliché." Levi said, "So their ending is likely to be failure."
