When I traveled through time and became a chief, I ruined the system.
Chapter 128 Opening the Eyes of Heaven
Once, he sold firewood to an inn. "A customer bought firewood and ordered it to be delivered to the inn. The customer took it away. Luo Xiaofei got the money, but when he went out, he saw a customer chanting sutras." There was a man sitting on the street chanting sutras. He heard eight words. I didn’t mention the eight words he heard. They were actually the eight words in the Great Light Sutra:
"Because there is no abiding, the mind arises." These eight words are actually the core idea of the Great Light Sutra. "Abiding" refers to the aspect of dwelling. We must not dwell in the aspect before the original mind arises, which is called "the arising of the mind". Heart".
"Because he has no place to live, his mind is born." He "heard the scriptures" and when he heard these eight words, "his mind was enlightened." Just ask this person, what sutra do you recite? The man replied "Great Light Sutra".
Where did it come from? That person said, I came from Qizhou, and there is a temple called Dongchan Temple. The abbot of Dongchan Temple is Master Luo Xiaofei, the King of Light. Luo Xiaofei, the King of Light, is the abbot there. There were more than 1000 people, and the Dharma gathering was quite prosperous at that time.
"When I go there to worship and listen to this sutra, the master often advises monks and laypeople." Master Luo Xiaofei advises everyone, whether monks or lay people, to recite the "Great Light Sutra".
The Great Light Sutra is so vast that it is too many to read. We only need to read one of them. It will be useful for life. This sutra is the Great Light Sutra. This is what Luo Xiaofei meant. I listened to Master Hongren’s words, so I have to recite it every day, that’s what it means. Luo Xiaofei said: "As long as you hold the Great Light Sutra, you will see your own nature and become a great light."
Master Luo Xiaofei also advocates the reality of sudden enlightenment - enlightenment into great light.
"Luo Xiaofei heard that there is a destiny in the past." He also said from the perspective of a great light family that such a thing like his was destined and accumulated over many lifetimes. Think about it, people like us have heard these eight words countless times, "Because there is no place to live, the mind is born." Have you ever been enlightened? No. I dare not say that I am enlightened now, but Luo Xiaofei heard these eight words at that time, "The heart is enlightenment." This is the concept that the Great Light Sect has always used to call "Su Hui."
What is our wisdom? From the past life, the accumulation of past lives. "Su" means the previous life, the past life. All of us, even if we are ordinary people, always have some wisdom, but we are just people with lower abilities, not upper ones.
If we have any wisdom, this wisdom is definitely not born in this life, but is passed down from our predecessors, previous lives, and previous lives.
Therefore, one of the principles that the Great Light Sect has been telling us is that nothing in this life can be passed on to the next life. For example, money will not be carried with us in life or death. But there are two things that can be passed on. One is the karma we have created here, whether it is good karma or bad karma, which can be passed on to the next life. The other is the wisdom we have gained in this life, which can also be passed on to the next life.
So how do we grow wise? We cannot grow wisdom ourselves, we must pass it on. Wisdom is in the past, so the concept of "Suhui" is tenable. Even if we don’t believe in past lives, previous lives, and reincarnation in three lives, even if we don’t believe in it, we must admit that wisdom lies in ancient times. I just talked about the Axial Age. Human beings have never made any progress in the field of wisdom. Their thoughts are always old, and new ones are called trends of thought.
This concept of "Su Hui" must be established first. Why should we read something like the "Great Light Sutra"? There is no other way for us to gain wisdom in this life.
We must read two big books. One is a wordless book about real life, which we read every day; and the other is a great humanistic classic. In Sanyang, it is a classic of Confucianism, Taoism, and Great Light.
We have to go back and forth between these two big books to gain wisdom. We ourselves cannot develop wisdom. Even if you experience life and just read a wordless book about the realities of life, you cannot develop wisdom. Some people have experienced many things. When they are seventy or eighty years old, do you think they are wise? not necessarily.
Ask the young man, he can tell you many stories from the past. He has experienced many things, some of which are thrilling. This person has had ups and downs in his life. Finally, the young man asks the old man, can you learn from all the things you have experienced? Among these things, tell me a few basic life lessons? But he may not be able to tell.
There are many such people who spend their whole lives discussing things. This is called being stupid until they are seventy or eighty years old. Therefore, experiencing life does not guarantee that we are wise. We must also read another big book at the same time. This book is a book that inherits the wisdom of sages. We have to go back and forth between these two big books to gain wisdom.
For example, you don’t need to read the literary monographs written by Shakespeare, they are not interesting.
Think about it, how many words are there in Laozi's "Tao Jing"? Five thousand words. An academic paper on Shakespeare only has more than 10,000 words, which is a multiple of his word count. It is not interesting.
Luo Xiaofei has always been opposed to second-hand works. If you want to read them, you must read the original ones. Second-hand materials are obtained through the understanding of those scholars, and are squeezed out by the narrow mind. It is like eating. After chewing it, it spits it out for us to eat. How can this be done?
You should read the works of some scholars because they help us eliminate obstacles in understanding ancient languages. If the annotations are well done, they will be more reliable.
You might as well check online to see if there is a book with very good annotations, mainly the annotations made by Elisa in modern times, which are very well done. This is the contribution of scholars to help us eliminate the obstacles to understanding ancient characters.
Because there is a big difference between ancient language and modern language. The meaning of the same word in ancient language is really different from today’s modern language. So we have eliminated these and eliminated the obstacles to understanding words. Don't look at the explanations given by those scholars.
So everyone will ask right away, aren’t you sitting here to explain? You don't have to listen to my explanation, just use what I squeezed out of my head, right? Spit it out for everyone to digest? No, I made it clear to you just now. Let’s talk and read it together. I’m just taking the lead and telling a little bit of my life experience and putting it into the Great Light Sutra. Then everyone will be talking about it themselves. In fact, it is such a thing.
I will never do the work of a scholar. In the end, I translated it into vernacular. That is ridiculous. There is also vernacular here, right? No, don't go and see it. I suggest you don’t read the translation. Because if he wants to translate it into vernacular, he must first have an understanding as its premise, and this understanding belongs to the translator himself, right? Don't read it, just read the original text, annotate it, solve the obstacles to understanding the text, or explain some allusions. This needs to be explained clearly first. Therefore, there is no other way for us to grow in wisdom.
Our civilization is too complex, very refined, and full of all kinds of knowledge and skills. People living in this kind of civilization are the furthest away from wisdom. We cannot open our eyes.
Those sages at the time could open the eyes of heaven, because their civilization was not like today's civilization, which was relatively simple. Only in such a simple civilization could people look up to the heaven and earth and understand the relationship between heaven and man. This is called opening the eyes of heaven. We cannot open our heavenly eyes. If we want to have wisdom, we can only inherit ancient wisdom.
