Chapter 59 The Greedy Sheriff

The owner of the Strawberry Town grocery store is a very careless person.

He curses the butcher in the town every day, because the butcher's meat stall is in a very conspicuous location at the intersection of Strawberry Town.

This caused the meat sales in his grocery store to become very poor, and more people were willing to buy meat from the butcher.

Although bootlegging is a side job for him, due to the prohibition on alcohol, it is more profitable than a grocery store.

Of course, his way of colluding with the police was different from David's.

Even if he brews a batch of private wine, he will not sell it all at once, but will only sell it to some old friends he is familiar with.

Even so, it can bring him a very considerable income every month.

"These damn bastards, they are colluding with the police station. Will those police officers become blind at night?"

"So many people were selling moonshine on the street, even in front of my shop."

"They're taking taxpayer money and doing nothing."

"Damn! Damn! Damn! I have to find a way to stop them."

Doss, the grocery store owner, quickly thought of a way.

Historically, it was 20 years after the federal government promulgated Prohibition, but before that, prohibition actions had spread throughout the federal continent for nearly half a century.

The earliest initiators of prohibition were the Puritans who immigrated from England.

The Puritans believed that alcohol was the root of sin and should be banned.

The emergence of the women's movement also gave a great impetus to the anti-alcohol movement.

Men's alcoholism has led to a lot of violence, and most of the money they earn is used to buy alcohol, which also makes women hate drinking.

Strawberry Town banned alcohol because there were many Puritans living here, and Timmins was able to be elected mayor of Strawberry Town because of their support.

Doss took the idea to Timmins, the town mayor.

Having lived in Strawberry Town for so many years, he naturally had some Puritan friends.

After uniting these Puritan friends, he found the mayor of Timmins, hoping that he could stand up and expel these outsiders.

"I'm very sorry, Mr. Doss. You should know that Strawberry Town is a tourist city, and I do not have the power to expel anyone. If they break the law, that should be a matter for the police department."

"Perhaps you can go to the police station to report the crime."

Although Timmins was the founder of Prohibition in Strawberry Town, he was not a Puritan himself.

On the contrary, he is very interested in the moonshine that recently appeared in Strawberry Town, or he is still a big customer of these moonshine.

Because he purchased 10 bottles at one time, he met the conditions for one person to form a group.

So, why did he drive away these bootleggers? This was not within his power.

This result obviously did not satisfy Doss, but he had no reason to refute it.

"Maybe we can get bootlegging agents to come and arrest them."

One Puritan came up with his own idea.

Selling bootleg liquor is illegal, but in a small place like Strawberry Town, there are naturally no bootlegging agents.

Doss actually didn't want to recruit bootlegging agents because he was afraid he would be implicated.

Many people knew about his behavior of selling illegal liquor in the small town.

But for now, this is undoubtedly the best way.

So Doss and several Puritan friends wrote a letter to the federal government, reporting the illegal behavior of someone selling illegal liquor in Strawberry Town.

Donal doesn't know any of this because he's currently dealing with trouble at the Strawberry Township Police Department.

Greedy Sheriff Ryder, after seeing David's moonshine becoming popular in Strawberry Town, he felt that he could only get a pitiful $300 a month, which was really too little.

Of the 300 US dollars, he also had to give 100 US dollars to other police officers. Thinking of this, he felt his heart breaking.

So he called Donal into his office and asked him to increase his share of the dollar each month.

"Mr. Donal, you should know that your current behavior will have a great impact on the entire Strawberry Town."

"Recently, many residents have been reporting crimes to the police station, and I have suppressed all these matters."

"But the police officers are under a lot of pressure, and I am also under a lot of pressure. If you are allowed to continue like this, it may be difficult for me to be re-elected at the end of the year."

There are two situations for small town Sheriffs, appointment and election. The elected town Sheriff does not belong to the federal government, but is hired by the residents of the town.

Sheriff Ryder is obviously an elected Sheriff, not an appointed one. He needs to face an annual election and can only be re-elected if he succeeds in the campaign.

"So, how much does Chief Ryder think is appropriate?"

Donal asked bluntly. He naturally understood that Sheriff Ryder had said so much just because he wanted a beautiful knife.

Sheriff Ryder did not hesitate, decisively opened his palm and stretched out five fingers.

"$500, Mr. Sheriff, are you crazy? Even in Valentine, Sheriff Malloy wouldn't ask for so much."
