Chapter 995: Still in Hawaii (5)
After being busy from last night until noon the next day, everyone returned to the "Five-O" base to meet and summarize the clues they had at hand.
Kono was busy in front of the computer, with Cheng Hao standing next to him. The two of them didn't realize how hungry they were until they saw the takeaway food brought back by Jack and Danny.
"The medicine you found in Palmer's room is indeed not smallpox. The CDC has confirmed it. The label on the bottle is consistent with the contents. It is called 'Cyclotriptine', a new drug that is still under testing."
"So the needle holes on Palmer's body were actually left by the injection of this new drug?" Jack asked.
Cheng Hao looked a little confused. "But I just contacted Max before you came back. He said that he did not find any traces of the drug in the tissue samples. If that's the case, his theory that smallpox came from injection still holds true."
"We now know why a man with no regular income and who lives on a meagre military pension and disability benefits could live in a place like the Breakers for so long."
Jack handed a bowl of fried rice noodles to Kono. It turned out that delicious food should be found in inconspicuous places. When he bought chicken yesterday, the snack stand recommended to him by the enthusiastic Cantonese man tasted quite good.
He even found a pretty authentic pancake shop nearby. To be honest, when he saw a white girl making pancakes skillfully, he felt like some important state secrets had been stolen.
Kono took the takeout box and used chopsticks skillfully. "You said you want to be a clinical trial participant, right? We thought of the same thing, so I just contacted Statium Biopharmaceuticals.
They acknowledged that there is indeed an ongoing clinical trial on Oahu, but because it is a double-blind trial, they will not know the exact identities of the participants until it is completed.”
"They should have a branch or something on the island, right? The list must be in the hands of the person in charge." Jack opened the plastic bag and took a bite of the fragrant pancake.
On the way back, he and Danny had already finished one each. Both of them spoke highly of the pretty white girl making pancakes, both for her skills and her looks.
"Yes, that's right. I contacted their local office. The person in charge of recruiting volunteers is a project manager named Ken Tanner, but we couldn't contact him. The people in his office said that he didn't go to work today."
"So?" Danny drawled, waiting for the next words.
"Before you came back, I was planning to notify HPD to go to his house, but now that you're back." Kono opened his phone and pressed twice, "The address has been sent to you."
Danny heard the notification tone of his phone indicating that he had received a text message. Just as he was about to pick up his car keys and go out again, he saw Kono finishing the remaining fried rice noodles in two or three bites, and he also picked up his car keys, as if he was going to go out as well.
"Is it enough to have just me and Jack?" He asked in surprise.
Kono shook the key in his hand and said, "The crime lab just found the location signal through the cell phone number of the deceased Palmer. It is located in the direction of the dock. I plan to go over and take a look."
"Remember to take personal protection measures." Jack handed her a pack of masks and rubber gloves.

20 minutes later, at the door of a residence, Danny knocked for a long time but heard no sound coming from the room. He turned to Jack with a helpless expression.
"To be honest, I have a bad feeling."
Jack drew his pistol and listened carefully and discovered something, but the noise did not come from the room, but from the garage next to it.
"Did you hear the car engine?"
Danny suddenly became nervous and quickly drew his pistol. "You mean he wants to escape?"
Jack shook his head. "That shouldn't be the case. The sound has been going on for a while. It's always been idling."
Danny carefully approached the small window next to the garage and looked inside. It was full of smoke, but he could vaguely see what looked like someone there.
"He's in there! Open the door!"
The two men quickly went around to the main door of the garage, and Jack found a crowbar from the garden to open the garage door. An indescribable smell of car exhaust filled the entire garage.
Danny rushed into the garage regardless of his own safety and dragged Ken Tanner out of the car with the help of Jack. Unfortunately, the middle-aged fat man was already dead at this moment.
"He's been dead for at least four or five hours." Jack briefly examined the body and estimated the approximate time of death, which was around seven or eight o'clock this morning.
"Suicide? Out of guilty conscience?" Danny made a guess that he didn't even believe.
Jack lifted the corpse's head and showed him a large bloody patch on the back of the head. "Obviously not. The cause of death was skull injury. This was a very poorly staged fake suicide scene."
Danny sighed and took off his gloves, then he pulled out his phone and called HPD, "I'll notify someone to come and seal off the scene."
Before he finished the call, Kono called. She found Brian Palmer's cell phone and a large bag of clothes on a seaside viewing platform not far from a yacht pier.
The girl was terrified because there was a horrifying biochemical pollution symbol printed on the plastic bag containing the cell phone and clothes.
Fortunately, she followed Jack's reminder and put on a mask and gloves, otherwise she might have been taken away for quarantine by the CDC.
Now the clothes and cell phones have been sent to the only crime laboratory on the island for inspection, while Jack and Danny briefly searched Ken Tanner's house, but unfortunately found nothing. Neither the computer nor the cell phone was found.
"I have a feeling that this case won't be complicated, but it will definitely be quite a headache." Jack sighed as he watched the forensic personnel taking fingerprints from Ken Tanner's door handles and even the car keys.
"What do you mean?" Danny was confused.
"What does all this, as well as the crude suicide scene arrangement in the garage, mean?" Jack asked instead of answering.
As an experienced detective, Danny understood what he meant after a brief pause, "The murderer is not trying to cover up the truth, but to delay time."
"Yes, all they're doing is delaying our investigation as much as possible, which means whatever they wanted to do is almost done."
Jack really likes the clever plot designs in American TV series, which are linked one after another and naturally make the audience fall into a tense feeling of anticipation.
But when he was in the situation himself, the experience was not pleasant.
Once the hemorrhagic smallpox virus with a mortality rate of 97% spread on the island, he was truly powerless except for protecting a few people around him.
The CDC and the military do have sufficient vaccine reserves, but if they want the authorities to make the decision to immediately vaccinate all residents on the island, they must at least be able to present sufficiently convincing evidence to the governor.
