Chapter 1203 Conversation in the Backyard (Part )
Seeing the four people looking at him with shocked eyes, Jack shrugged and indicated that any fool could guess what was going on.
After placing the cigar box on the table and motioning for them to help themselves, he looked again at Cassel, who was telling the story.
What followed was even more bizarre. In the court of additional indictment, Hal Lockwood was kidnapped.
Several stun grenades knocked everyone present, including Beckett and Cassel, to the ground. Three armed men posing as bailiffs escorted them to the roof of the building, boarded a helicopter and fled.
The getaway helicopter was found at a New Jersey airport not long after, but all DNA on it had been removed with a detergent.
When things developed to this point, Police Chief Roy Montgomery's dark history could no longer be hidden.
The escaped Hal Lockwood sneaked into his home late at night and threatened him to hand over Beckett, otherwise he would kill his entire family.
At the same time, Kevin and Esposito also dug through a pile of old papers to find all the people who might have had contact with John LaGrande and Gary McAllister.
An old policeman named Mike Ivankovich came into their sight. He graduated from the police academy with John LaGrande.
The two went to the Police Bar opened by the retired policeman, where they saw an old photo of John LaGrange, Gary McAllister and Roy Montgomery.
Kevin and Esposito thought that the Chief of Police Montgomery, whom they had always respected, was the mastermind behind everything. Unable to accept the reality, the two men had a fight in the back alley of the bar.
By the time the two remembered to inform Beckett, she had already been summoned by Commissioner Montgomery to the hangar where the helicopter was found.
In the hangar, the black police chief told the female detective everything. He was the rookie police officer who accidentally killed FBI undercover agent Bob Amen in the gang-on-gang kidnapping case in 1939.
John LaGrande and Gary McAllister were Montgomery's trainee instructors and heroes in his mind.
Naive and ignorant of the ways of the world, he regarded the two men's kidnapping of gang members for ransom as an act of justice and participated in it. It was not until gunshots rang out during the robbery and Bob Amen fell in a pool of blood that the black police chief, who was a trainee police officer at the time, realized what he had done.
But Montgomery was not the mastermind behind the incident. There was someone who knew what the three men had done and had the ability to send all three of them to jail, but he chose to demand the ransom.
Montgomery's exact words were, "He used that money to get to where he is today."
"So where has the other party climbed to now?" Jack was a little curious.
"He didn't say." Beckett shook her head and wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes. As far as Jack could remember, this was the first time he saw this usually dashing female detective cry.
Montgomery also expressed his guilt over the death of Beckett's mother. Although the silencing was done by a mastermind, it was indeed related to him.
He has always known the truth, but he has remained silent because he was afraid of being disgraced and the power of the mastermind behind the scenes.
Seeing Jack holding his head with a headache, Cassel helped explain, "Montgomery said he knew Beckett's character. If you tell her the other person's name, she will go straight to the door, but that would be tantamount to suicide."
Jack already knew what happened afterwards. Before the killer arrived, Commissioner Roy Montgomery had Castle take Beckett away by force, and chose to stay alone, dying together with Hal Lockwood and his men with a mentality of atonement.
It's such a bloody plot that I feel powerless to complain about it. Although the whole thing seems nonsense at first glance, it does make sense logically.
Roy Montgomery felt guilty after Beckett's mother's death, so he took good care of her after Beckett graduated from the police academy and joined the 12th Precinct.
The two established a relationship of both mentor and friend, and after Montgomery discovered that Beckett had been privately investigating the truth about her mother's murder, she wanted to protect her.
Jack concluded, "So Commissioner Montgomery should have some important evidence that can not only reveal the identity of the mastermind, but also make the other party afraid to act rashly.
The two parties may even have reached some kind of agreement, with the former keeping an eye on Beckett to prevent her from finding out the truth, and the latter promising not to harm her."
"We thought so too." Seeing that the other three were silent, Cassel could only continue the conversation.
The four had decided to keep the matter secret and insist that Roy Montgomery died in the line of duty, letting everything return to dust.
That is to say, it was not until this moment that Beckett gave up seeking justice for her mother through legal means.
"Okay." Jack looked at the time. It was not too late as it was just past 9 o'clock, so he looked at the female detective who was in a daze again.
"So no matter what, you won't give up on finding the truth, right? Even if the other party may send out new assassins at any time, even if this will put everyone around you in danger."
These hurtful words made Beckett, who had just come to her senses, immediately fidget. She subconsciously looked at the duo of funny people opposite her, and then at Cassel, with an expression of great struggle.
"I don't know, I. No, you're right, but I can quit, I can go on alone"
Jack just found it funny. "Resign? Losing your police identity means you lose all the resources you can use, which also means the other party can attack you more unscrupulously.
Do you really hope that by leaving your body lying on the street, I will take over your case and finally find out the real murderer?"
Cassel on the side seemed to have thought of certain scenes and shuddered subconsciously, but before he could say anything, Jack stood up briskly.
"I've handed this case over to you. In exchange, please sign the film and television adaptation agreement for the Nikki Hitt series as soon as possible. Chris has complained to me several times that your publisher ex-wife is really difficult to deal with."
Cassel couldn't help but cheer up when he heard that. Just as he was about to agree, he heard Beckett's protest, "This is my business. It has nothing to do with Cassel."
Jack ignored her protest, winked at the great writer, and said, "You all stay here tonight. Kevin and Esposito should not get involved in what happens next. Otherwise, you might lose your jobs."
Seeing him preparing to go out, Cassel asked in confusion, "Where are you going at this time?"
Jack turned around and gave the four of them a mysterious smile, "Of course, go find Chief Frank Regan and talk to him about how long to suspend the three of you."
Upon hearing this, the three NYPD officers present all looked stunned.
