American Comics: The Force Awakens
26. Strange stories in the sewer
Late at night, it was raining heavily, and except for a certain group of four people who came out to look for trouble, there was no one on the street.
"In 1922, the architect Allen Wayne, the ancestor of the Wayne family, suddenly fell into an uncovered sewer manhole under police protection and was eventually confirmed to have drowned." Carl lowered his head and narrated, "He designed Gotham. Half the city has buildings, high-rise buildings, road traffic, but they forgot to put a manhole cover on the road.”
"Yes, this is it." He kicked the manhole cover under his feet.
"Is this related to the Court of Owls?" Mr. Freeze asked. "Claw killed him?"
"If I like small talk in the middle of the action, then yes."
"We'd better go down quickly. Even though it's late at night, the equipment of your group is too conspicuous." He raised his hand, used the force to remove the heavy manhole cover, and put it aside.
Except for Carl, who still wears a brown cloak, a scarecrow, and a glass head with thick armor, Harley is dressed more normally, except for the bright colors.
"I discussed it with the screenwriter and decided that the pale skin color caused by chemicals is no longer suitable for this version." She said at the time, but the twin ponytails turned into red and blue at some point. "Recently, people don't like to watch tragic characters or dead people. Audience tastes have changed really fast."
Even though she has not experienced the effects of chemicals, she is still quite white.
Climbing down the maintenance ladder, it was not completely dark below.
"Ah, there are lighting equipment. It seems that gangs smuggling through the sewers have been very active recently." Karl raised his left hand, and the manhole cover above was closed again out of thin air, blocking out the heavy rain.
"So, can we have a brief chat now?" Karl suddenly raised his voice. "The gentleman listening around the corner."
From the moment he came down, Karl could sense that someone was hiding nearby. The lighting facility was not always on, but someone was down there just now.
He raised his hand.
Around the dark corner, the sound of running on water was fading away, but then stopped suddenly.
Several people turned the corner, only to find that the man was floating strangely in the air, grabbing their throats.
Force choke, always feels good when used.
He wore a metal mask on his face with a small hole in it, which looked very strange.
"The Whispering Society." Scarecrow looked at the suffocating man and said, "One of the five gangs currently controlling smuggling on the Underground Railroad. Their new members will wear this sealing mask for a whole year to ensure their loyalty to the organization. .”
"A lowly little character." He smiled disdainfully. "It seems this road is connected to the Underground Railroad."
Karl let go of his hand, and the man knelt on the ground, gasping for air.
A strong force came out of nowhere, and he was horrified to find that the metal mask welded to his face was torn apart.
"Very good, sir, your mask has been opened. Congratulations on becoming a traitor to your organization." Karl looked at the metal debris that flew to his hand and said, "Now, could you please tell us what is going on down here?" Huh? I'm ashamed to say that, we are all tourists here for sightseeing, and we won't disturb your business." He secretly activated the force, invaded the man's head, and listened.
The man opened his eyes wide and opened his mouth, but he didn't make any meaningful sound.
"Ah, it's a pity that his mind is in chaos. I can't tell anything about his ability. He probably got knocked down." Karl said regretfully, "Then, mentor, it's your job."
The Scarecrow walked up silently and stretched out his hand: there were special needles on each finger of his gloves, and the tubes were connected to the containers of the surrounding equipment.
"A little low-concentration solution can wake up people who are addicted to drugs and recall their fears." The scarecrow touched his neck lightly, and the venom was injected with the needle.
"Ah...bats...rats...crocodiles...monsters! Monsters!" The man muttered to himself first, and then suddenly roared loudly.
With a "swish" sound, he was frozen into ice, and half of the echo of the roar was cut off.
"He's too noisy." Mr. Freeze said calmly, as if he had just done a trivial good deed.
"It's a pity. I think we might have gotten some more useful information if he didn't yell." Carl sighed. "But it doesn't matter, I almost understand."
"Understood, what do you understand?" Harley asked.
"Do you know what the first impression of American teenagers is when they think of sewers?" Karl asked casually as he recalled the structure of the map and motioned for the group to move forward.
"I know, it's a mermaid! Mermaid in the Sewer is a famous horror movie!" Harley raised her hand, acting like a female student eager to get the teacher's attention.
"That's just the delusion of a Japanese psychopath." Carl shook his head. "But the reality is that their first impression is of rats, and then of crocodiles."
"But in fact, there are indeed a lot of rats in the sewers. As for bats, everyone knows about them."
"What about crocodiles? Are there really crocodiles in the sewers?" He continued, "At least in Gotham, there are."
"You're talking about Waylon Jones." Scarecrow responded. "For a thug, he's not bad."
"If you can survive his first round of attacks and survive to successfully communicate with him."
Waylon Jones, better known as Killer Croc.
Young Waylon Jones suffered from a strange atavistic disease, which gave him a reptilian appearance similar to Dr. Lizard next door without committing suicide. His relatives hate him for it, and he has a past experience working in a circus: Gothamites do love watching freak shows. But the circus owner deceived him and took away the money he deserved. He bit off the black-hearted boss's arm and entered the sewer, becoming the new crocodile legend in the Gotham City sewers.
"Low temperature allows such cold-blooded animals to activate their instincts and fall into a deep sleep." Mr. Freeze said calmly, "With my freeze bomb, Killer Crocodile will not be our problem."
Before setting off, everyone was given some gadgets, fear venom, freeze bombs, and Harley's free mints.
By the way, the mints have been eaten.
"Very good. After confirming one of the troubles, please think about what the monster refers to." Karl tilted his head, and with his movement, a passage to the lower level was opened.
In Gotham, there are countless things that can be called monsters. Just calling the word monster does not explain its identity.
While talking, the group of four came to the passage below. Their footsteps were steady and clear, echoing in the quiet tunnel.
Until another voice came.
"Very good. It seems we don't need to guess anymore. The cute monster that haunts us has appeared." Karl raised his hand to signal everyone to be alert.
With a "boom", the brick wall beside the tunnel shattered, and the vague roar of a man came from the other side of the hole.
"Solomon Grundy, born on Monday!"
