[HP] Being a problem student at Hogwarts
Chapter 36 Mr. Filch’s Secret
House elves are very magical creatures.
They are usually small and skinny, with bat-shaped ears, bulging eyes the size of tennis balls, a long, flat nose and a high-pitched voice. To those who are not familiar with them, it is almost impossible to tell their gender.
They are a slave race that has served their masters for generations. They undertake all housework and are bound by their masters. They have no wages and no holidays. They are proud of their labor and ashamed of roaming freely. It is their nature to obey the orders of their masters, which goes against this nature. It is painful for them, and they must use cruel self-punishment in exchange for inner peace.
The only way to escape is for the owner to hand them a piece of clothing, but receiving clothing is considered the greatest shame by house elves. Gaining freedom also means social death.
This magical nature is clearly not natural. House elves are actually an alien race conquered by ancient wizards.
Although Tom looked through every book in the library that mentioned house elves, which was pitiful, he could not find a specific description of that period of history, but as far as Tom thought, the conquered race could remain the same for so many years. Sun and Earth serve the wizards enthusiastically and thoughtfully, and their minds must have been distorted by some powerful witchcraft that has been passed down from generation to generation in the blood of house elves.
If they weren't controlled by magic, how could the house elves have remained so obedient for thousands of years and the entire group had the same style? During the slave society period in the Muggle world, many rebels emerged.
House elves also abide by some ancient rules, such as keeping their master's secrets, keeping silent for their master, maintaining the honor of the family, not speaking ill of their master, etc. Another example is that an elf who is not discovered is a good elf. So even though there are hundreds of house elves in Hogwarts, the hygiene of their dormitories and common rooms, the changing of bedding, the food they eat every day, etc. all rely on the hard work of these house elves, but knowing them But there are very few people.
While doing homework with his friends in the common room, Tom couldn't help but tell them about his visit to the kitchen, expressing his shock at meeting a house-elf for the first time. He had previously thought that the cleanliness of Hogwarts was solely due to Mr. Filch. He had no idea that there was such a magical creature in the school!
"Huh, I thought George and Fred were really awesome when they were getting food from the kitchen, you know, stealing food from school and stuff like that. It's so easy to do that for a long time," said Ron, "They're really Will you be so enthusiastic and give you all the food?"
"Yes, super enthusiastic," Tom replied. "Uncomfortably enthusiastic."
"Hogwarts is probably the place with the most house elves in the wizarding world," Ron told them. "They have to serve the teachers and students of the school. They come out to clean classrooms, lounges, etc. in the dead of night. Yes. It would be great if we had one in our family. Mom wouldn’t have to work so hard."
"So hard? How much salary does the school pay them every month?" Hermione asked.
"Salary!" Ron was playing chess with Harry and laughed when he heard Hermione's question, "They don't want salary."
Tom told Hermione what he had gathered about house elves.
"No wages! No holidays! Heavy labor! Cruel punishment!" Hermione cried after hearing this, her eyes blazing with anger, "This is simply slavery!"
She looked around the neat and bright common room, feeling increasingly sorry for the house elves.
"We have to do something!" she shouted.
Ron, who was concentrating on playing chess, said "Huh" casually.
Hermione stood up and slapped the chessboard. The chess pieces were staggered and cursed in protest.
"Ron!" she ordered without any doubt, "check the relevant laws and regulations to see if there is anything about protecting the rights and interests of magical creatures."
"Harry," she turned to Harry, "I need you to speak when necessary and use your reputation as a savior to awaken more of your countrymen to join us.".Seven
"Tom, we have to have a plan. First, we can form an association, um... let's call it the Movement to Ban Cruel Treatment of Our Magical Creature Friends and Improve Their Legal Status, what do you think?"
Harry looked at them in bewilderment.
Ron sighed and said: "Hermione, listen. They like, like this. They like to be other people's slaves!"
"No one likes to be someone else's slave!" Hermione growled with tears in her eyes.
"House elves are not human," Ron said calmly.
Hermione took two steps back, shook her head and said, "No, that's not the case... I can't believe it, how could you say that?"
"When will you adapt to your wizard identity?" Ron asked.
"If adapting to the identity of a wizard means turning a blind eye and turning a deaf ear to the cruel fate of house elves like so many wizards in the past many years, then I can't do it!" Hermione straightened her back and wiped away the stain on her face. Tears, "I am a human being first and a witch second!"
She randomly swept the homework, books and quills on the desktop into her schoolbag, flicked her hair and dragged her schoolbag away.
"What a bad temper." Ron said with some annoyance.
Harry had to keep silent about the quarrels between his friends. He was worried that if he said something wrong, he would offend or even lose his friends, so he said nothing.
"Why doesn't she understand?" Seeing that Harry was silent, Ron turned to Tom and complained, "This is the magical world, and magical creatures have their own racial characteristics - goblins are greedy and think that all treasures belong to them; centaurs I just like to stay in the woods and watch the stars. Why is Mars so bright today, and Venus will twinkle tomorrow? It’s so weird; unicorns only allow pure girls to get close to them... What’s the reason for all this?”
"House elves just like being slaves!" Ron said angrily. "They find it very pleasurable to serve wizards. I don't understand why Hermione unilaterally thinks this is cruel. If she really thinks about the elves, , why don’t you ask the elf what he thinks first?”
Tom hadn't thought about it this way. Maybe the racial characteristics of magical creatures are so unreasonable? Just like unicorns only allow innocent girls to touch them, maybe house elves really just love to serve others?
In Muggle fairy tales, there are always a group of fairies who fly around and take pleasure in fulfilling other people's wishes. No one has ever said that these fairies' free service is squeezing them and liberating them. Santa Claus is busy working overtime every Christmas to deliver gifts to children all over the world, and no one asks whether Santa Claus’s expenses are enough or how much his annual salary is.
But no matter what, it is still wrong to treat the elf who is enthusiastic about serving you cruelly. Hermione's idea of improving and protecting the treatment of house elves was a good one.
"Do house elves really like to serve others?" Tom asked.
"It's not about serving people, it's about serving wizards." Ron shrugged and said, "Some house elves are very picky, and ordinary wizards are not good enough. They are only willing to serve pure-blood wizards."
"You see they are very enthusiastic towards you, but if it is towards a Muggle?" Ron spread his hands, "That may not be as important as the teapot warmers they are wrapped in."
"So," Tom said slowly, a vague idea suddenly came to his mind, "elves are enthusiastic about wizards, but are unwilling to serve Muggles?"
"They simply ignore Muggles," Ron said. "They are much more arrogant than us wizards in this regard."
Tom thought he had discovered a secret.
A secret about Mr. Filch, the school administrator.
Mr. Filch hated house elves with a passion. The last time he accidentally asked why he didn't want house elves to help him clean the castle, Mr. Filch kicked him out in anger. He had never seen Mr. Filch perform magic, no matter how difficult to remove the stains in the corridor, he was panting with mops and rags...
Mr. Filch is not a real wizard!
"Oh, Ron, tell me, is it possible for a person to live in the magical world and not be a wizard at all?" Tom asked.
"You mean squibs?" Ron curled his lips, "Some come from a wizarding family, but they can't cast a single spell. They can't find their place in the magical world, and they can't live in the Muggle world. It's pitiful. Good. This is very rare. Pure-blood families are most afraid of this situation. If there is a Squib in any Slytherin family, it will never be able to raise its head again."
"So they try to be as secretive as possible. Many times, you can't even figure out how many children they have until they officially enter school. Sometimes they will also claim to have sent their children to study abroad, and then live a different life. For a few years, I just talked about going on a trip, but unfortunately disappeared and so on."
"The Malfoy family originally planned to send Malfoy to Durmstrang," Ron continued. "It is a magic school in Germany. It only admits pure-blood wizards and studies dark magic all day long. It is very important to that family. A ferret’s appetite.”
"But at that time, many people suspected that this was actually a squib in the family. They just used the common saying of going to study abroad. Think about it, if the sole heir of the Malfoy family was a squib!" Ron laughed happily, "So Malfoy finally came to Hogwarts, otherwise their family would never be able to explain it."
"It would be nice if Malfoy did go to Durmstrang," said Harry. "How peaceful Hogwarts must be."
