Chapter 29: Balrog
The Balrog - the Balrog belongs to the Maia clan - a servant of Valar. He was originally a fire wraith corrupted by Melkor at the beginning of the world.
The Balrog dwelt in Utumno and Angband, where Morgoth had brought scourge to Middle-earth.After the fortress was destroyed by the Valar's War of the Gods, some Balrogs hid in underground caves to await Morgoth's return from captivity.
In 1495 of the Twin Trees Era, Morgoth stole the Silmarils and fled to Middle-earth.Ungoliant, an evil creature in the form of a spider, attempted to seize the Silmarillion, but the Balrog lurking in Angband heard Morgoth's cry and came to his aid.Their whips of fire freed Morgoth from Ungoliant's web, and he fled in terror.
In 1497 of the Double Tree Era, Feanor marched into Angband to recapture the Silmarillion; the Balrog attacked and surrounded him.Fëanor was struck several times by their fire whips, until he was fatally wounded by Gothmog, the leader of the Balrogs.Later, Morgoth claimed that he wanted to make peace with the elves.Yet he sent the Balrog with the envoys, and captured Maedhros son of Fëanor.
During the War of Sudden Fire in 455 of the First Age, the dragon Glaurung led an army of Balrogs and Orcs to leave Angband. Then Morgoth's army defeated the human-elven coalition and penetrated deep into the heart of Beleriand until they were repulsed by Thingol.
In the Battle of Tears in 472 of the First Age, Gothmog, the leader of Angband Fortress, led a team to divide the forces of Fingon and Turgon. When a Balrog entangled Fingon with a whip from behind, Gothmog's great ax shattered Fingon's helmet and knocked him to the ground; the Balrogs swung their sledgehammers and drove Fingon's body into the dust. mud.
Turgon's army, under the cover of Húrin the Dor-lomin, retreated through the mouth of Sirion to Gondolin. All the human soldiers died in the Fens of Serech, except Hurin who was captured alive by Gothmog and taken to Angband, where he was imprisoned for 28 years.
In the year 510 of the First Age, Gothmog led his Balrog forces in an attack on Gondolin. It attacks Tuor in the King's Square, but is interrupted by the Elven Lord Ecthelion.Gothmog wounded Ecthelion's swordsman, and Ecthelion drove the spikes from his helmet into Gothmog's chest. They sank to the bottom of a huge fountain and died together.
Another Balrog attempted to ambush the group of fugitives Tuor, Idril, and Eärendil at a pass called the Eagle's Cleft.Glorfindel fought the Balrog to make the others escape; they fought on the edge of a cliff, and both fell to their deaths.
At the end of the First Age, the Valar armies launched a furious war to destroy Morgoth. Most of the Balrogs were defeated, but a small number escaped into caves deep underground. We only know the whereabouts of one of them: it entered the Misty Mountains and hid under the foot of Red Horn Peak for 6000 years.
In 1980 of the Third Era, the Khazad-dûm dwarves encountered the Balrog while excavating mithril mines under the Red Horn Peak. The Balrog may have been awakened by the dwarves' excavations, or it may have been revived by Sauron's growing power.King Durin VI was killed by the Balrog; the next year, Durin's son Nain I also died at his hands.Khazad-dûm was abandoned by the dwarves and became known as Moria - the "Dark Pit" - which was occupied by Orcs and other evil creatures.
In 2989 of the Third Age, Balin came to Moria and tried to regain the dwarf territory; but the Balrog disturbed it again.Soon after, in 2994, the colonial settlement was destroyed.
The Fellowship of the Ring entered Moria on January 3019, 1 of the Third Age; the Balrog sensed their arrival. On January 13, after the Fellowship of the Ring left, the Balrog entered Mazarbul Chamber, and felt the presence of Gandalf outside the door. Like the Balrog, Gandalf was also a member of the Maia.Gandalf cast a spell that closed the door, and the Balrog fought with him and almost broke open the door - then Gandalf spoke the word 'command'.As the two parties struggled, the door collapsed and the roof of the hall collapsed.
The Balrog escaped from the hall and pursued the Fellowship to the Bridge of Khazad-dûm; Gandalf stood on the bridge to prevent him from passing. The Balrog wielded a spiked whip and a flaming sword; Gandalf shattered the Balrog's flaming sword into molten shards with the Sword of Gramdrin. He struck the bridge with his staff, causing the stone bridge to fall apart under the Balrog's feet. The Balrog fell into the abyss with a terrifying roar, but his whip raised and wrapped around Gandalf's knees, and the wizard was pulled off the broken bridge together.
The Balrog and Gandalf fell for a long time, and Gandalf was burned by the Balrog's flames. They fell into an underground lake deep at the foot of the mountain, and the Balrog's fire was extinguished, becoming slimy but still strong and continuing to fight Gandalf. Then it escaped through the tunnel toward the Endless Stairs and climbed to the Silver Teeth Peak, with Gandalf following closely behind.
The Balrog burst into flames again; from January 1 to 23, he dueled with Gandalf on the summit. Finally, Gandalf threw the Balrog off the peak; it crashed down the side of the mountain and died.Gandalf also died, but he was recalled as Gandalf the White.
There is no record of the Balrog in the history of Central Continent. Therefore, the nemesis of Durin the Firelord of Moria may well be the last of his kind.
