Chapter 1897 Silk "broken"

Unearthed from Tomb No. 5 in Mashan, a Fuchai spear of the king of Wu was unearthed. The whole body is decorated with geometric dark patterns, and there are two lines of 8-character wrong gold inscriptions on the base of the spear.

Among them, this root carving to ward off evil spirits, although it looks very simple in appearance, it is of great historical significance, because it is the earliest root carving work handed down from ancient times.

This piece of evil spirits stands tall and powerful, just like it was placed in the tomb more than 2300 years ago.

It was originally an ordinary tree root, perhaps abandoned in a corner of Ying City.

But a clever craftsman sees its potential artistic value.

So he thought about it a little, modified it a little according to its shape, and the image of a tiger-headed snake with a swagger was highlighted.

However, this image didn't seem ferocious enough, so he carved out its facial features in detail, and added beard and teeth.

To make it more lifelike, he sculpted the four-legged, wandering, flopping legs into bamboo joints.

The images of snakes, lizards, birds and cicadas are respectively carved on the feet.

It constitutes a precise elaboration of the biological chain of snakes eating lizards, lizards eating birds, and birds eating cicadas, and conveys a certain religious concept of Chu people.

After the carving was completed, the craftsman painted the whole body with dark red lacquer, and painted with vermilion lacquer in some places.

More than 2300 years later, archaeologists carefully removed it from Tomb No. [-] in Mashan, Jingshi.

At this time, it is still as shiny as new, and the color is bright.

Due to the lack of existing materials, it is not possible to determine the purpose of this root carving.

In the end, it is used as a tomb-suppressing beast to "ward off evil spirits", shocking ghosts and protecting spirits for the owner of the tomb.

Or in accordance with the tradition of "death is like life", it is used as a highly artistic means for the tomb owner to enjoy in the afterlife, or a combination of both.

It is also because of this that even its name cannot be determined now, but this does not prevent its exploration and appreciation.

This time I found that apart from this wood carving, the more valuable thing should be the upcoming clothes.

Jinan City is the former site of the capital of Chu State in the middle and late Warring States period.

More than 2000 Chu tombs, large and small, were discovered there, including some of the tombs of prominent officials and nobles.

Therefore, when sorting out the ancient tomb under the Mashan Brick and Tile Factory, I never thought that there would be unexpected gains.

But when the coffin board was opened, a gap was opened, and the scene inside was seen, I immediately realized that this time was a great discovery.

It turned out that they found that there were many things similar to silk products in the coffin.

If this is the case, this is a major discovery in the archaeological world.

my country is the first country to weave with mulberry silk. It is said that as early as the Neolithic Age, my country has invented silk weaving technology.

However, because silk is difficult to preserve in burials and is extremely perishable, we rarely see ancient silk handicrafts.

At that time, the plain yarn Zen clothes unearthed in Mawangdui No. [-] Han Tomb, as thin as a cicada's wing, amazed the world.

Everyone is looking forward to discovering ancient silk products in other places, but every time there are some silk fragments, which is disappointing.

When the person in charge of the Jingshi Museum received a call to report, he realized that this was likely to be a major breakthrough in archaeological history, so he immediately drove to Jinan City.

After arriving at the scene, they immediately verified the situation, and sure enough, they saw the texture of some silk fabrics through the gaps in the coffin boards.

He immediately decided to cover the coffin boards back, and wrapped the entire coffin with thick plastic sheeting.

Then, the entire tomb was covered with tarpaulin, leaving only one or two staff members to take care of it, and the rest went back to discuss a more appropriate cultural relics protection plan.

Afterwards, he reported this situation to his superiors and requested experts to support him. The State Administration of Cultural Heritage attached great importance to this matter.

At this time, many archaeological experts heard the news and came to participate in the archaeological excavation work.

Among them, there are silk protection experts who have previously participated in the archaeology of Mawangdui No. [-] Han Tomb.

The expert and the experts from the Beihu Museum jointly discussed a set of specific excavation and protection plans.

This set of plans was quickly approved by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage. At this time, this small earth pit shaft tomb has been named "Tomb No. [-] in Mashan, Jiangling, Beihu".

Outside the coffins of the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, there is often a thick layer of barren curtains, usually plain brocade fabrics.

The seemingly complete barren curtains in front of me are actually completely decayed, and they are likely to be broken into pieces with a slight touch. What should I do?

More importantly, a silk painting with delicate texture is also glued together with the deserted curtain.

Finally, after research, the waste curtain was cut into several large pieces along each side of the coffin, numbered, rolled up and put away.

When the desolate curtain was completely removed, a complete coffin was presented in front of everyone. It was black and shiny, and its color was as new, and it was quite well preserved.

After that, they began to study how to completely open the coffin lid.

At this time, it was already past four o'clock in the morning, but no one felt tired. Everyone was looking forward to the moment when the coffin was opened.

The archaeologists tried to insert the blade into the gap in the coffin, looking back and forth for possible active interfaces.

After more than an hour of hard work, the coffin lid can finally be opened.

Everyone watched nervously as the lid of the coffin was opened little by little, not daring to let out the air.

Suddenly, someone shouted: "The silk is well preserved, quickly put on the lid of the coffin, and bring it back indoors for cleaning."

Why can't it be cleaned up on site?It must be because of the fear of being destroyed.

Anyone who has a little knowledge of archaeological work knows that many cultural relics excavated from ancient tombs have the problem of "dead in light".

Inside the tomb, it was still shining golden, but once it came into contact with the outside world, it immediately lost its color.

These experts are naturally more worried about such problems than anyone else, because these silk products are so precious.

However, other archaeological experts at the scene were also worried that the bumpy road would "break" the silk in the coffin? This has happened before.

A heated discussion started at the scene of "Tomb No. [-] in Mashan, Jiangling, Beihu".

Experts who participated in the excavation of Mawangdui know the properties of silk very well.

He said decisively: "I have confirmed that there is no fluid accumulation in this coffin, which will not cause the silk products to be smashed during transportation."

Although the other experts were not too relieved about this, they also understood that there was also a huge risk in opening the coffin in the wild, so they agreed to his proposal.

The coffin was transported to the large conference room of the Jingshi Museum, where everyone will witness the historical moment when the mystery of the Chu tomb was unveiled.

At 2 a.m. on February 4, the "uncovering of the coffin" officially began.

When the coffin lid was fully opened, everyone exclaimed in unison.

Because the coffin is full of bright and dazzling ancient silk products, it is really spectacular.

Such a discovery is a miracle, because silk, which is impossible to survive, has really been passed down through the ages for us to see.
