The flight state and engine speed are constantly changing, and the compressor must also withstand constant changes. With such repeated changes, the air flow moves back and forth in the compressor, and flows out from the outlet at varying pressure and speed.
This is the "surge" problem of the engine.
When "surge" occurs, it will be accompanied by a sudden rise in the gas temperature in front of the turbine and a loud sound. The damage to the internal blades is still a small problem, and if it is serious, it will cause the engine to stall directly.

If in the process of supercharging, the stator vane rotates in a small range with the change of pressure, it will continuously change the wind blocking capacity, and also stabilize the internal pressure change, so that the occurrence of "surge" can be controlled and reduced possibility.
In fact, to understand it simply, it is like something falling from the sky, the purpose is to create an impact, but it may be damaged if it falls directly on the ground, and the possibility of damage will be reduced accordingly if it falls on the spring.
So the disadvantages are also obvious.
The movable stator blades have a negative effect on the performance of the compressor, that is, the boost ratio is reduced, and the same is true for the bleed valve, and the discharge of high-pressure gas will also reduce the boost ratio.
