12. The Girl in the Cage Dreams

A few days after meeting Tanigawa Sakuya-san, it seems Akechi-san and Emi are planning various things every day.

I could only follow my father’s instructions to the letter, keeping to the curfew.

“Eternity…”

“I’m sorry, I need to go home early.”

I couldn’t say anything to Maru, who I had finally become friends with, and it was painful not being able to interact with my friends.

After the fun shopping, it felt like the bonds with everyone were disappearing, and my heart couldn’t settle.

“It’s okay, just a little longer. Just endure a few more days.”

“Emi… thank you… thank you.”

“I’ll listen to that after everything is over.”

Embraced by Emi, I fight back the urge to cry.

If it weren’t for those two, I might have already been crushed.

They were that much of a support to my heart.

Even if I return home early, the house remains tense.

In a house where I feel suffocated, I study desperately, wishing I didn’t have to be there for even a second.

And then…

“You’ve endured well. Let’s resolve everything today, Mr. Miyamura. The ties with your father will also end.”

“Mr. Akechi…”

I heard those words from Mr. Akechi in the library during lunch break.

Emi is also smiling happily.

“Hehehe… I’ll announce today’s strategy.”

“First, let’s break past the curfew today.”

“Eh…? Why would we do such a thing?”

“There’s no parent who wouldn’t worry if their child comes home late, right? We’ll take advantage of that, and Shu and I will persuade them.”

“I see. If you two are going to persuade them, then I feel relieved.”

With that, I went along with their plan.

First, the three of us visited the park near my house to kill time.

“Then, I’ll give you one last piece of advice.”

“Okay, got it, Mr. Akechi!”

“【■■■■■■■■】”

We confirmed the flow of what we were about to execute.

I would act alone, while the other two would take different actions together.

“Also, if you ring the intercom when you get home and your family doesn’t let Eien-chan in, follow the instructions in this envelope.”

“Uh, okay…”

“Then, let’s regroup later!”

I walked home and reached the entrance.

I tried to enter the house lit with lights, but the door was locked.

I pressed the intercom and called out.

“Dad, Mom, please let me in!”

“Don’t joke with me! Staying out this late! You’re not coming in today!”

“Wha…!?”

Feeling the anger through the intercom, I trembled a bit, but as per Emi’s instructions, I opened the envelope.

It was amazing that everything they said came true.

I opened the envelope and pulled out the paper inside.

“Use this to break into the house!”

And then, to my astonishment, I found something at the back of the envelope.

There were two silver trinkets.

One of them was…

“A key?”

Why does Emi have the key to my house?

It doesn’t make sense.

My hands tremble as I turn the key, and the door actually opens.

My head starts to spin.

Huh? Why am I doing this…?

“I’m home…”

As I say this, it’s as if my father had been waiting; he stands there.

“Fa…”

—Slap.

I’m struck by a powerful slap on the cheek and fall backward.

“You…! Is that why you stole the key from dad yesterday!?”

“I don’t kno—”

“Silence!”

With a loud smack, the strongest slap I’ve ever received turns my world white.

And then, my consciousness slips into the dark abyss.

“…Huh?”

What was I doing?

Oh, right.

I was knocked out by my father’s slap.

Seriously, he didn’t have to go that far.

I mean, I want to go buy swimsuits with my friends, go to the pool…

*Sigh*, dad really did it this time.

…Huh?

…What?

What did he do?

What did I do?

From noble mtl dot come

“Dad, why are you sleeping in such a place…”

As I tried to shake off the father who was leaning against me, a sticky liquid attached to my hand.

It smelled like rusty iron, cold and numb.

What’s going on?

Why is Dad covered in blood?

Why are there so many knife wounds on his abdomen…?

“O, Dad…”

His abdomen was stained with fresh blood.

And my body was covered in a disgusting liquid.

Blood, blood, blood.

Blood, blood, blood.

“Eeeeee! Ahhh! Ahhh! Ahhh! Ahhh! Ahhh! Ahhh! Ahhh!”

I don’t know what’s going on.

Why is Dad dead?

Where’s Mom?

What’s going on?

Hey, Emi.

Detective Miyamoto…

What happened to me?

Walking into the depths of the room.

It’s weird, I’m sure the lights were on when I entered the house.

Why is it so dark outside the house?

I cautiously stepped inside and turned on the electricity switch.

Right in the middle, there was someone hanging.

“O, Mom!?! Hey, what…? What’s going on!?”

“Ah, the birdcage has finally been broken, congratulations!”

“Eh…? Ah, Mr. Kechi…”

As I expected, there was no one at the entrance, but Detective Miyamoto came walking in, clapping his hands and laughing with a “Kecha Kecha” sound.

What’s going on…?

“Is that? It doesn’t seem like you’re having fun at all? We really rushed to break down Miyamura’s birdcage, didn’t we, Emi?”

“Yeah, we wanted to break it down within a month, so we freed eternity at a frantic pace.”

Emi is walking towards the same spot as Michiru, taking small steps.

It seems like everything is going to turn out like this.

“What’s going on? What’s this? A prank? A dream…?”

“The truth”

“…Emi?”

“Don’t look away, eternity killed my father.”

ーーーーー

I’m getting hit, and I throw the small item from the entrance hall to my father.

I keep running away.

“Too, too, too! You’re a terrible parent! ?”

“Ah! ?”

I fall down, my foot caught.

Where’s my mother?

What’s my mother doing about this abnormal situation?

My hand comes into contact with something silver.

It’s a knife.

The same knife that was put together with the key and sealed in an envelope earlier.

I swing that knife down.

“…”

“Ah! Too! ?… Ah! Ah! ?”

I’m in a trance, stabbing my father’s stomach with the knife.

Stab, stab, stab, stab, stab, stab, stab, stab.

“Ha, ha, ha… “

“And, eternity… !?”

“O, mother… !?”

“It’s okay, everything will be taken care of by mother”

“?””

Just like that, I could hear Mom running to the living room, the sound of a chair falling, the sound of a rope swaying.

Just like that, slowly, I begin to lose consciousness.

“Hahaha… Yes… It was me, I killed… I’m sorry, after all the effort we both put in… But, what’s this…? Why is there a knife in the envelope…? If it weren’t for that…”

“It’s so you would forever be the one to kill your father.”

“What…?”

“If you want to break out of the cage, you can’t rely on others! You have to do it with your own hands! But you did it, you’re amazing, Eien.”

“Don’t touch me!?”

Emi tries to hug me like she always does, but I push her away.

It’s clear that Emi’s nuance was deliberately guided to be that way.

“This is wrong!? This isn’t right!? Did you set this up…? Why!? Weren’t we friends!?”

“We are friends. That’s why I helped you break the cage. Now we can play every day, Eien.”

“It’s impossible… I’ll be arrested. This is no time for playing…”

“How about this then? ‘The mother killed the father. After the murder, the mother committed suicide. That’s what you’ll believe for the rest of your life.’ ‘You witnessed the mother killing the father from start to finish.’ ‘The mother almost attacked you too, but then she just looked at you and hung herself.’ ‘The only survivor at the scene was Miyamura Eien. Akechi Hidetoshi and Sasaki Emi were not present.'”

Memories I don’t recognize are being forced into me one after another.

My memories are being fabricated.

This is wrong.

My memories are being muddled.

My brain feels wrong, I can’t even stand, and I fall to my knees on the floor.

From noble mtl dot come

Why did Mom suddenly kill Dad?

Wait? Who did I kill again?

“Erase all evidence, make everyone who’s been involved with you from middle school entrance to today forget everything.”

The memories of my happy, rainbow-colored past vanish in an instant.

Meeting Emi.

Meeting Tojumon-kun.

Meeting Risa.

Meeting Madoka.

Meeting Tanigawa-san.

And then.

All memories of meeting Akechi-san, who first spoke to me and smiled, are deleted…

“Farewell, girl in the birdcage. This time, it was quite an entertaining farce.”

An unfamiliar man’s voice passed by.

The birdcage was destroyed.

And the bird itself had its feathers plucked and died just like that.

“Hm?… What was that dream about…?”

I feel like I had a very, very important dream.

A dream that was shining, and yet so sad.

A distasteful dream where everything about me was trampled upon.

“Eien, wake up! It’s morning!”

Hearing my mother’s voice, I feel a terrible sense of relief.

The life inside the birdcage isn’t over yet.
