Hollywood Director 1992
#290 - Berlin Night, Pink Lady
In early January, Link brought his new movie, "The Butterfly Effect," to Berlin, Germany, to participate in the 45th Berlin International Film Festival.
Founded in 1951, the Berlin Film Festival, along with the Cannes International Film Festival and the Venice International Film Festival, is known as one of the world's three major international film festivals, with the highest award being the 'Golden Bear'.
Held annually in January or February, it lasts for two weeks. The film festival is divided into sections such as 'Main Competition', Short Film Competition, Generation, Forum, and Special Screenings.
Before the 1980s, the Berlin Film Festival favored political themes, and films of this kind were easily favored by the jury. However, with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War, the Berlin Film Festival became more diversified in its award selections, placing more emphasis on artistic and humanistic qualities in films.
This year, 1338 films from around the world participated in the Berlin Film Festival.
After ten days of evaluation, 22 films were shortlisted for the main competition section.
Including Link's "The Butterfly Effect," Ann Hui's "Summer Snow," Stanley Kwan's "Red Rose White Rose," Li Shaohong's "Blush," and the Hong Kong film "The Day the Sun Turned Cold."
Films by Chinese directors were a major highlight at this year's Berlin Film Festival.
In particular, Link's "The Butterfly Effect" made a stunning appearance during the film festival, quickly sparking heated discussions among German media.
As Germany's largest-circulation newspaper, "Bild" did not hesitate to use lavish praise, calling it "a stunning masterpiece wrapped in a philosophical core under the guise of science fiction."
Film critic David Thomson praised the film in his article for cleverly integrating psychology and chaos theory, exploring eternal themes such as fate, choice, and human nature through ingenious timeline weaving.
"In a science fiction genre filled with visual spectacles, 'The Butterfly Effect' stands out with its unique humanistic care and profound ideological content. Director Link has constructed a shocking parallel universe with rigorous logic, allowing the audience to contemplate the essence of life in a terrifying atmosphere. This is not just a science fiction film, but also a magic mirror reflecting human nature."
"Bild" praised the film as the "most thought-provoking" film of the year and sparked a philosophical debate about fate and choice at the film festival.
After several days of evaluation, Link won the Silver Bear Award for Best Director for "The Butterfly Effect." The Golden Bear for Best Film went to the French film "Nelly \u0026 Monsieur Arnaud." Siqin Gaowa won the Best Actress Award for "Summer Snow," and director Li Shaohong won the Outstanding Individual Award.
Chinese directors won three of the festival's ten awards, which also became an interesting news item at this year's film festival.
"Director Link, congratulations on winning this award."
At the film festival party, director Stanley Kwan raised his glass to congratulate him.
Chen Chong, the female lead of "Red Rose White Rose," who came to Berlin after the film entered the main competition section, introduced the two.
"Thank you! Director Kwan, 'Red Rose White Rose' is also very interesting. The visuals are beautiful, and the emotions are rich and delicate. It also gave me some inspiration. I hope to have the opportunity to collaborate in the future."
"It would be my honor."
Director Stanley Kwan raised his eyebrows and said excitedly, "Director Link, I also want to thank you for your support of 'Red Rose White Rose.' The subject matter of this film is very niche, and not many people are willing to invest. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have been able to make this film."
The producer of "Red Rose White Rose" is Dongfeng Pictures.
"If it's about this matter, you should thank Chen Chong. She recommended this film."
Link pointed to Chen Chong beside him.
Chen Chong didn't mind showing their relationship in front of outsiders, and said with a smile, holding Link's arm, "Director Kwan, I said Link is a person who understands movies very well. Do you believe it now?"
"I believe it! Director Link is not only a great director, but also a fantastic film investor. It's my honor to work with him."
Director Stanley Kwan nodded excitedly.
Link smiled and, under the guidance of Chen Chong and Director Stanley Kwan, met several other domestic filmmakers.
Including Ann Hui, Li Shaohong, Josephine Siao, Wang Zhiwen and Wang Ji, the male and female leads of "Blush," Liang Benxi, the director of "The Day the Sun Turned Cold," and Wang Yan, the female lead, etc.
Everyone present knew him, but this was the first time they had chatted face-to-face. In addition, he had a lot of scandals recently, so everyone was more curious about him.
However, also because of his great fame and high value, everyone was very careful when speaking and did not discuss overly sensitive topics.
Link also did not deliberately try to get close to several domestic filmmakers. He simply extended cooperation invitations to them through Chen Chong. If they lacked funds for filming, they could seek cooperation with Dongfeng Pictures. Dongfeng Pictures was not short of money and was willing to work with domestic counterparts to produce more good films.
Directors Ann Hui and Li Shaohong both agreed. Although they were famous directors, they sometimes lacked funding for filming. If Dongfeng Pictures was a good partner, they would be happy to cooperate.
"Link looks really young."
After Link left, director Liang Benxi sighed, looking at his back.
"He's only 23 years old, of course he's young."
Wang Ji smiled.
"He can make movies of the level of 'Seven Sins' and 'The Butterfly Effect' at the age of twenty-three. It's really amazing. There aren't many people in the world who are better at making movies than him."
Director Ann Hui praised.
"I heard that Link is worth billions of dollars and has dozens of girlfriends. And he's still so young, tsk tsk, it's really enviable."
Wang Zhiwen smiled, touching his chin.
Director Liang Benxi nodded in agreement.
"You men, instead of envying Link's talent for making movies, you envy him for having many girlfriends. You're really incorrigibly vulgar."
Director Li Shaohong joked.
"There's no way around it, who told us we were originally vulgar people."
Wang Zhiwen smiled indifferently.
Beside them, Wang Yan listened to their words, looking at Link in the middle of the crowd with a dazed expression, her almond eyes blinking.
At the party, Link also met the chairman of the jury of this year's film festival, George Djurdzherov, jury member Siqin Gaowa, as well as famous German directors Volker Schlöndorff, whose representative works include "The Tin Drum" and "Run Lola Run," famous German actress Nastassja Kinski, and supermodel Diane Kruger, etc.
Link chatted with them and also extended cooperation invitations to them.
Currently, Guess Pictures is under attack by the seven major film companies, and the situation is relatively severe. Introducing allies from the outside to strengthen the strength of Guess Pictures and increase the number of films produced will provide more leverage when competing with the seven major film companies.
This is also one of Link's countermeasures against the siege by the seven major film companies.
After attending the film festival party, Link returned to the hotel to rest. In the evening, Chen Chong came to his room and brought a girl with her, Wang Yan, the female lead of "The Day the Sun Turned Cold."
Wang Yan was just twenty years old and hadn't yet acted in "My Fair Princess." She was just an ordinary actress who had practiced dance since she was a child, with a relatively beautiful appearance and a good figure.
However, after the girl entered the room, her face was flushed, and she lowered her head, not daring to look at him, like a little white sheep entering a wolf's den.
Link shook his head. Because of the changes in his body, his needs in some aspects had become strong, and he was easily tempted. But even if it was strong, he wouldn't mess around outside, let alone use coercive means to deal with women. Firstly, he disdained it, and secondly, he didn't need to.
He asked Wang Yan to sit down and chat, asked about her work situation, encouraged her to practice her acting skills, and gain more experience in the crew. Then he asked Chen Chong to take her away.
After a while, Chen Chong came back to apologize to him, saying that they had agreed in advance, and the girl was also very proactive, but she didn't know why she became so coy after seeing him. She was probably too nervous. She was still a novice and had no experience, and asked Link to forgive her, saying that this kind of thing would never happen again.
Link did not blame her and told her not to do this. The two were partners. As long as she fulfilled her responsibilities as the general manager of Dongfeng Pictures, even if several projects invested by the company lost money, he would not blame her and would continue to support her.
Chen Chong was very moved when she heard this and took the initiative to kneel down to please him. Before the two could proceed to the next step, there was a knock on the door.
Link got up and opened the door, seeing Wang Ji, the female lead of "Blush," standing against the door, wearing a burgundy long dress with a black fur coat, her slender legs wrapped in black stockings, and her feet in a pair of exquisite high heels. Her mature and plump figure looked particularly attractive in the dim light.
She shook a bottle of whiskey in her hand, exuding a hazy and chaotic atmosphere, and smiled, "Link, do you want to drink?"
As she was speaking, she saw Chen Chong coming out from inside, looking at her with a smile.
Wang Ji was 32 years old this year. She had filmed several dramas in China when she was young. At the end of the 1980s, she went to the United States to study and settle down. She played the female lead A Chun in the TV series "A Native of Beijing in New York," and was acquainted with Chen Chong and Liu Xiaoqing.
Wang Ji didn't expect to meet under such circumstances, and her cheeks turned red in an instant.
"I'm also here to ask Link to drink. Let's drink together!"
Chen Chong smiled nonchalantly, walked to the door, and pulled her inside.
