Hollywood Director 1992

#254 - Chen Long visits

Jennifer Aniston and the other five members of the 'Friends' cast stayed at Moon Bay for a few days. By mid-September, with the first season of 'Friends' about to premiere, they needed to return to New York to prepare for the promotional work. If the TV show's ratings were good, they would proceed with filming the second season.

After seeing them off, Link continued his vacation at the villa with Jennifer Lopez and the newly arrived Brooke Shields.

During the vacation, Link wasn't just indulging in basketball every day. In fact, he spent most of his time in the villa's room reading, writing scripts, and handling company work.

During this time, he finished reading more than thirty books, completed the director's script for his new movie 'The Sixth Sense,' and adapted three new screenplays, including 'The English Patient,' 'Catch Me If You Can,' and 'A Beautiful Mind.' He also finished writing the scripts for 'Final Destination 2' and 'Paranormal Activity 3.'

'The English Patient,' 'Catch Me If You Can,' and 'A Beautiful Mind' were published novels, and their copyrights were held by Columbia Pictures. Link requested them for adaptation after seeing them, intending them as future collaborative film projects between the two companies.

In addition, after confirming his direction of 'Batman 3,' he also received the script sent by Warner Bros. Pictures.

This script was a semi-finished product.

The outline was determined by Warner Bros. Pictures.

The original director was Tim Burton, and this version of the script was written in Tim Burton's directorial style. The screenwriters were Lee Batchler and Janet Scott Batchler, a husband-and-wife team.

This version tells the story of two villains appearing in Gotham City. One is 'Two-Face,' who hates Batman because his face was disfigured on one side. The other is Edward Nygma, a scientist at a company owned by Batman, who develops equipment that can collect human brainwaves and applies to Bruce Wayne for a research project, which is rejected because it requires live subjects for experimentation.

After the employee turns evil, he becomes 'The Riddler' and begins to take revenge on Batman.

At the same time, Batman is also caught in an emotional entanglement with psychiatrist Dr. Chase Meridian.

To get revenge on Batman, Two-Face and The Riddler join forces to kidnap Dr. Chase and Batman's sidekick, Robin, forcing Batman to come out and save them.

In the final moments, Batman defeats Two-Face and The Riddler, successfully rescuing Dr. Chase and Robin.

Since this script was not yet finished, Link needed to modify and improve it according to his requirements. After completing the script, he would submit it to Warner Bros. for review. After the review passed, he would start working on the budget. Once the project budget was completed, Warner Bros. would allocate funds, and Link would assemble the crew to prepare for filming.

So, the script was the foundation.

In terms of film quality, the first three 'Batman' films were somewhat inferior to the three directed by Christopher Nolan, and their box office and reputation were also average.

Link had also considered scrapping the script and directly filming 'The Dark Knight' and 'The Dark Knight Rises.'

However, Warner Bros. Pictures did not accept this proposal. What they needed was a sequel that continued the plot of the first two films, not a prequel, nor a reboot to film other content. Therefore, the plan to completely abandon the first two films and use a new script was not feasible.

Link was also worried that the 'Batman' storyline was progressing too quickly. Without the first three films as a foundation, audiences might not accept Nolan's 'Batman' trilogy.

After careful consideration, he chose to accept this script and planned to modify it based on his own ideas for filming.

With his current skills, as long as he was diligent, it wouldn't be difficult to make a 'Batman 3' that surpassed the original.

Knock, knock, knock!

While he was focused on revising the script, Jennifer Lopez knocked on the door and said with a smile, "Boss, there are guests. Do you want to see them now?"

"Who is it?"

"They are two Chinese people."

"Okay, I remember now."

Jackie Chan had called yesterday, saying he wanted to come and visit and have him take a look at 'Rumble in the Bronx.'

Link put down his pen and went downstairs. As he passed the outdoor swimming pool in front of the villa, he saw Brooke Shields swimming in the pool. The crystal-clear pool water reflected her fair and rosy skin. Her golden-brown long curly hair swirled like seaweed, and her slender waist, long legs, and full hips made her figure even more attractive than a mermaid.

"Hey, honey, want to come down for a swim?"

Brooke Shields swam to the shallow end, flicked her wet long hair back, revealing her delicate face.

"I have something to do. I'll come in a while."

Link kissed her cool red lips on the shore and went to the reception room to greet Jackie Chan and director Stanley Tong.

When the two saw him come in, they quickly put down their teacups and stood up to greet him.

"Don't be so polite, please sit down."

Link waved his hand and inquired about the situation of 'Rumble in the Bronx.' 'Rumble in the Bronx' was completed in July and was scheduled to be released in Hong Kong and Asia during the Spring Festival.

When it would be released in North America depended on Guess Who Entertainment's arrangements, and the key was Link's opinion.

So, director Stanley Tong and Jackie Chan brought the semi-finished videotape here, hoping he could offer some advice to ensure the film's smooth release in North America.

Link took the videotape to the home theater for screening.

The film had not been edited and still had some extra shots.

Link watched it twice and offered several suggestions for revisions from the perspective of the North American market, suggesting some adjustments to the shots and the translation of the dialogue. The emotional scenes and the female lead's scenes could be reduced, and Jackie Chan's action scenes could be increased.

American audiences liked to watch Chinese Kung Fu and didn't like to watch two Chinese people falling in love on screen. A weaker emotional drama would not have much impact.

He didn't say much about other issues.

He had only watched the movie twice and could only see a few problems. If he were an editor and watched it hundreds of times, he might be able to edit the movie more beautifully, but doing so would not be cost-effective.

Director Stanley Tong nodded while taking notes.

"Director Tong, I've only watched it twice and don't have a good understanding of the overall film. What I said may not be accurate. The specific editing should still be left to the production department. This movie is good, and the box office shouldn't be bad."

Link said.

"Mr. Link, I'm relieved to hear you say that. You have discerning eyes. Every movie you've favored has never had a bad box office."

Jackie Chan said with a smile.

"It's not that exaggerated. I've just read a lot of information and know the market better than ordinary filmmakers."

"Mr. Link, you are too modest."

Link smiled and, remembering that there were some fight scenes in 'Batman 3' that required martial arts instruction, he took the initiative to bring up the matter and asked the two to recommend a few more powerful martial arts instructors, preferably multi-talented ones who were not only proficient in Chinese Kung Fu but also understood fighting and boxing.

Jackie Chan and Director Tong recommended Yuen Clan.

Yuen Clan was the most experienced martial arts instruction team in Hong Kong, and they had served as martial arts instructors for films such as 'Snake in the Eagle's Shadow,' 'Drunken Master,' 'Fist of Fury,' 'Once Upon a Time in China,' and 'Tai-Chi Master.'

Link expressed his gratitude to the two.

After discussing work, the butler Valu came in to report that dinner was ready.

One mistake, one first, one hair, one inside, one appearance, one in, one look!

Link invited the two to dinner, and Brooke Shields and Jennifer Lopez also attended in formal attire.

One wore a red evening gown, with blond hair and fair skin, a delicate appearance, and a dignified temperament, like a saintly noblewoman in an oil painting.

The other wore a white long dress, with wheat-colored skin like silk, and long black curly hair draped over her shoulders, tall and fit, with some wild sexiness.

Both were wearing high-end custom-made dresses, which were very suitable for their figures and temperaments.

Jackie Chan's eyes widened like copper bells when he saw the two beauties, and he almost couldn't look away.

He suddenly found that the blonde beauty looked familiar. After thinking for a moment, he excitedly turned his head and said to Director Stanley Tong, "It's Brooke Shields, the eighth wonder of the world! She's here too."

"Don't talk."

Director Tong tugged at his clothes under the table.

Jackie Chan came back to his senses and realized that he had lost his composure. He couldn't help but touch his nose.

Link smiled nonchalantly and introduced the two, still saying that Brooke Shields and Jennifer Lopez were friends.

When Jackie Chan heard that it was really Brooke Shields, he swallowed repeatedly with envy.

He also loved to pick up girls, but he had never picked up foreign girls. The main reason was that foreign girls were too tall and had too large of frames. Standing next to them would make him look shorter, which he couldn't accept psychologically.

But Link was different.

Link was slender and tall, with broad shoulders and a thick back, and his muscles were bulging. Even Brooke Shields, who was 180 centimeters tall, would not appear too prominent next to him.

Jackie Chan began to envy Link's figure and muscles again.

At the same time, he also remembered the task assigned by his godfather, which was to introduce a few beautiful girls to Link. However, with Link having such beauties as Brooke Shields and that very sexy Latina beauty, he was afraid that it would be difficult for him to be interested in those little beauties from Hong Kong.

Jackie Chan and Director Tong rested at the villa for one night and then said goodbye and left the next day.

"This place is so beautiful. When I have money in the future, I will buy one here too."

Jackie Chan stood on the yacht, looking at the increasingly distant beach manor and said enviously.

"What are you buying it for? Such a big house, the property tax alone is hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. Including the villa and beach maintenance fees, servants' wages, yacht and car depreciation, etc., it will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, tens of millions of Hong Kong dollars a year. Can you afford it?"

Director Stanley Tong shook his head.

Jackie Chan frowned and his face fell.

He was a top star in Hong Kong, and his salary was five or six million per film now, and ten million when things were good. He could shoot up to three films a year, with an income of less than twenty million.

Let alone whether he could afford such a mansion, even if he could, the property tax and villa maintenance fees alone would cost him 1/2 of his income every year.

That was too exaggerated.

"Don't envy Link. Focus on filming and making more money. In the future, you can buy a smaller one here. A smaller one is also very good."

Director Stanley Tong comforted him.

Jackie Chan shook his head, if he wanted to buy one, he would buy a big one, a small one didn't count as a vacation manor at all.

In fact, compared to the big villa, he envied Link's ability to pick up girls even more. It was difficult for ordinary men to even see a beauty like Brooke Shields.

And Link not only kept Brooke Shields at home, but also had his arms around both of them.

As soon as he thought of the tall and plump foreign horse like Brooke Shields, and that hot Latina beauty, all being held in Link's arms, Jackie Chan was very envious. He took a hard bite of the sea breeze and made up his mind to work hard in Hollywood, make a career, earn more money, and pick up more girls.
