Hollywood Director 1992

#214 - Praising the high and trampling the low

"Damn it! Link has snatched another project from us again."

At Castle Rock Entertainment, CEO Robert Reiner slammed down the phone and said to Alan Horn, the head of production,

"I received news that Frank Darabont took 'The Shawshank Redemption' to Guessing Game Films. After chatting with Link, Link agreed to take on the project. We can't just sit by and watch Guessing Game Films steal this project. We must retaliate and have the legal department sue Darabont and Liz, making them pay damages for breach of contract."

Executive producer Alan Horn spread his hands and said, "It's difficult. The copyright of this movie is in Frank Darabont's hands. We abandoned the investment in this project, actually breaching the contract. Frank Darabont has the right to choose a new partner. It will be difficult to win even if this matter goes to court."

Robert Reiner looked gloomy and unhappy. Not long ago, Guessing Game Films snatched the 'Good Will Hunting' project from Castle Rock, and now they're snatching 'The Shawshank Redemption.' It's really too much.

"Rob, we lack funds in our account and can't continue to support the filming of 'The Shawshank Redemption.' We have no choice but to give up. It's expected that Director Darabont will find other companies to cooperate with after we give up."

CEO Robert Reiner also knew this, but the company taking over the project was Guessing Game Films, a company with whom Castle Rock Entertainment did not have friendly relations. This was the reason for his anger.

What made him even angrier was that Castle Rock Entertainment's current financial situation simply didn't allow them to retaliate against Guessing Game Films.

"Rob, take it easy. 'The Shawshank Redemption' is limited by its subject matter and will be difficult to sell tickets for. This is also why we gave up on this movie. Now that Link has rashly taken it on, there's a high chance he'll lose money, losing tens of millions. Isn't that the result we want to see?"

Alan Horn advised.

Robert Reiner frowned. When they were screening projects, they considered that 'The Shawshank Redemption' had no female lead, no romance, only prison life, male friendship, and hope for freedom. The theme was too singular, and there were no grand scenes.

Such movies were difficult to get good box office results.

Thinking of this, he relaxed his frown. "I heard that Link has a high standard for selecting movies. All the movie projects he favors end up being blockbusters. 'Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,' 'The Wedding Banquet,' and 'The Joy Luck Club' are all examples. Now that 'The Shawshank Redemption' is in Link's hands, will it become a box office hit?"

"Haha, that's a misnomer. Link invested in 'Ace Ventura' because he had a good relationship with the writer and star Jim Carrey. He invested in 'The Joy Luck Club' and 'The Wedding Banquet' because the directors of those two movies were both Chinese. These three movies are actually not movie projects that Link selected, but rather projects that took the initiative to find Link. Besides, if Link's vision were good enough, how could Soderbergh's 'The Underneath' have lost money?"

Alan Horn said with a smile, not caring.

Robert Reiner thought of the losses from 'The Underneath,' and his eyes lit up, nodding in agreement.

Just thinking about how Guessing Game Films had repeatedly snatched Castle Rock Entertainment's projects, and the incidents involving Richard Gere and others that led to the company's project losses, Robert Reiner couldn't let go of the anger in his heart.

He picked up the phone and called Michael Ovitz, agreeing to his invitation.

'Pulp Fiction' grossed $12.41 million in its second week, with a cumulative North American box office of $21.74 million.

The movie's word-of-mouth also continued to rise. Industry insiders enthusiastically praised Quentin in newspapers, saying that 'Pulp Fiction' perfectly integrated film art and commercial appeal, creating a classic film, saying that he pioneered the aesthetic form of romantic violence, and was a representative figure of violent aesthetic films, etc.

When praising Quentin, many film critics would also mention Link in passing, saying that the two used to live in the same neighborhood and both debuted at the 1992 Sundance Film Festival. Link first became famous through several low-budget thriller movies and became a popular figure in the directing circle within two years.

Now, Quentin has become a hit with 'Pulp Fiction' and has a tendency to surpass Link.

Industry professionals generally believe that Quentin has greater potential as a director than Link.

"Look! How well this is said!"

"But I really don't understand why my movie has such good word-of-mouth, but the box office growth is so low, while Link's movie has such poor word-of-mouth, but the box office data grows so fast."

"Harvey, can you tell me why?"

At Miramax Films, Quentin Tarantino patted the newspaper in his hand, which was full of nice words, but the box office results were only so-so.

This made him feel unreal.

It was as if a group of professionals were self-hyping in the media, while ordinary audiences were completely unmoved.

This situation was exactly the opposite of Link's movies.

After Link's movies were released, they were often criticized and scorned by professionals, and some newspapers even directly scolded them, saying that the audiences who liked Link's movies were illiterate and had little cultural level.

But the audiences simply ignored those criticisms and still went to the movie theaters to support him.

This situation made Quentin very helpless.

"Haha, Quentin, don't worry, 'Pulp Fiction' is an art film, with a long screening period and strong box office momentum. According to the current box office growth, it's not difficult for the North American box office to break $100 million."

Harvey said happily, looking at the newspaper.

In the past, when he saw Link's movies selling well, he often regretted that he valued Quentin too much at the 1992 Sundance Film Festival and ignored Link's talent, losing the watermelon and picking up sesame seeds.

Now, Quentin's second movie has been released, and with a cost of 8 million, it has grossed more than 20 million in two weeks, and the estimated box office results will exceed 100 million.

The box office return is more than ten times.

This result is great.

Although it's not as good as Link's 'Paranormal Activity' and 'The Blair Witch Project,' it's still better than many young directors.

This movie can make Miramax earn more than ten times the money.

It's a mistake to miss it!

It's a mistake to miss it!

"One hundred million?"

Quentin frowned when he heard Harvey's words, "You estimate that 'Pulp Fiction' only has 100 million in North American box office?"

"One hundred million is very good. 'Pulp Fiction' is not a commercial blockbuster. It's a remarkable achievement for the North American box office to exceed 100 million."

"One hundred million is too little. Harvey, 'Pulp Fiction' is better than 'Paranormal Activity' and 'The Blair Witch Project,' and the box office results should be even more. I hope Miramax Films can vigorously promote this movie, use the media to create topics, and attract more people's attention, just like Link did. As long as the publicity is in place, I believe the box office results will be even better, maybe even exceeding 'The Witch' and 'Final Destination.'"

As for 'Paranormal Activity,' the North American box office is 318 million, which is ridiculously high, and it's too difficult to surpass.

"Quentin, the reason why Link's movies can be hyped up is because the themes are relatively close to real life, which easily resonates with ordinary people, and it's also easy to connect with social news, giving Link room for hype. 'Pulp Fiction' has a larger artistic processing component and does not have topicality, making it difficult to hype up."

Pulp Fiction tells three stories, 'Vincent and Marsellus Wallace's Wife,' 'The Gold Watch,' and 'The Bonnie Situation.' Each of the three stories has a protagonist, and other characters play supporting roles in the other two stories.

This kind of story has a lot of exaggeration, fiction, and illogical elements after artistic processing and rendering.

There are no suitable materials for hype in publicity.

Quentin frowned, "You call Link and ask him for his opinion. He has rich experience in movie publicity."

Harvey didn't agree with this statement. He had worked in the film industry for more than twenty years and had promoted and distributed dozens of films. In terms of experience in this area, Link was far behind him.

In addition, the recently released movie 'The Underneath' lost money at the box office, and Link spent money and worked hard on publicity, but it still didn't improve.

From this point of view, Link is not that great.

However, he did not refute Quentin's words, saying that he would talk to Link about publicity later to see if Link had any good ideas.
