Game of Thrones: Lord of Winter
Chapter 125 Persuasion
"It's hard for me to convince myself to forgive those conspirators, Cole." The king sat at the desk and shook his head.
"The kingdom is already crumbling, Your Majesty." Cole continued to try to convince him.
Stannis was silent for a while before speaking, "I am responsible to the country. Boys, girls, men, and women in Westeros, I have to be responsible to them."
"If the Dothraki and Ironborn are allowed to come ashore, there will be a bloody storm in Westeros. They only have plunder and killing in their eyes."
How could Stannis not know their nature? The Ironborn have always had a bad reputation, and the Dothraki were no less generous.
"What conditions did they impose on you?"
"Tyrion Lannister's letter only mentions an invitation to the wedding. Tyrion is going to marry Sansa of House Stark, and Joffrey will soon marry Margaery Tyrell."
"Does Eddard Stark know that his daughter is getting married?" the king continued to ask.
"I think he knows that by now."
"Stark, Tyrell, Lannister and Martell." The king said in a self-deprecating tone.
He stood up and said, "Go and see Shireen. I'll be alone for a while."
Looking out the window at the dark night, after a while the knock on the door rang again.
"Your Majesty." It was Davos Seaworth, the Onion Knight.
"You have disappointed me, smuggler." The king turned his back to him. "I should punish you, but Cole interceded for you. He said that you were the most loyal knight and you were just deceived."
Davos lowered his head in shame. He was extremely resentful of his ignorance at this moment. "I know that I have sinned deeply, Your Majesty."
"I summoned you not because I want to hear your words of self-blame. I asked you to be the king's hand because I want to hear your advice. Please tell me truthfully, what is the responsibility of the king? Sir." The king asked. Over.
"The king's duty is the country, Your Majesty. The king protects his subjects and the kingdom." Davos answered without thinking.
"Have you read the letter again?" the king asked him.
"Yes." Davos asked the maester to read it to him, and Axel Florent only took a passage and told him.
"Chor suggested that I call a temporary truce on King's Landing. He said that the forces at Dragonstone and Storm's End were not strong enough to resist the enemy from across the Narrow Sea. Who was the enemy? The Lannister, the Dothraki, and that made me It’s hard to decide.”
"Your Majesty, what will happen if you put the carriage in front of the horse?" The Onion Knight suddenly asked.
"Putting the cart before the horse, smuggler."
Davos nodded slightly, "Your country needs your rescue, Your Majesty. When Mad King Alys was in trouble in the world, it was your brother Robert who defeated him and saved the Seven Kingdoms from fire and water, so the world is willing to honor him. Be the king. You should win the throne through the country, not the throne.”
Surprise flashed across Stannis's face, and Davos' words couldn't help but make him fall into deep thought.
Davos was right. He was almost crazy in his pursuit of power and the Iron Throne, and he almost lost sight of his responsibilities. Melisandre prophesied "heroes born from the boiling ocean, dragons hatched from inorganic stone, and swords of light drawn from the flames." These prophecies point to him.
This is the mission given to him by fate. Although he never asked for anything, he has to shoulder his own responsibilities.
"Everyone must do his duty, smuggler," the king said to him. "Remember your duty."
Not far from Cole's study room in the castle, the red-robed woman once again blocked his way.
He walked straight over, but she stepped aside and stopped him, "The night is dark, Sir."
Cole snorted coldly, turned around and left.
"Ants cannot understand human words, just as humans cannot interpret the omens of gods." She said to Cole, "I sometimes take warnings as prophecies, or prophecies as warnings, and I apologize to you, Sir."
"I'm not interested in your gods and prophecies, madam." Cole said without looking back.
He took a detour. The castle was filled with statues of various monsters. Cole didn't know why Aegon the Conqueror collected these things. They looked eerie.
Shireen was not in Aegon's Garden, they were following Maester Pyros as he read.
When Cole pushed the door open, Edric Storm was the first to spot him.
"We're studying history, brother-in-law." He picked up the book.
"The history of Aegon the Conqueror's conquests," Shireen said.
Edric jumped up to him, "You were so awesome that day."
Although both children were protected by the guards and quickly evacuated from the scene.
"Who did you learn your sword skills from? Can you use a hammer? They didn't hurt you, right?" Edric asked around him.
"There are too many questions, I can't answer them all at once." Cole stopped with a smile.
Cole greeted the maester, then found a chair to sit down and answered a few of his questions.
"A hammer is much more powerful than a sword, brother-in-law. Why don't you give it a try?"
"If I have a chance, I'll give it a try."
Cole talked with them about history, and he had read a lot of books about Aegon the Conqueror on the Wall.
Conquering the three dragons has always been known to everyone. I heard that the skeleton of Balerion, the Black Death God, was in King's Landing. Cole really wanted to see it, but he didn't know how inferior Caesar's physique was compared to Balerion.
It is recorded in the books that Balerion can cover half of the sky in King's Landing with his wings. Think about how terrifying it is. Only this kind of monster can control the Seven Kingdoms.
"There are dragons on Dragonstone," Edric suddenly said, "someone saw it. They said it was a white dragon flying towards the castle."
He and Shireen searched for a whole morning, but did not see any traces of dragons on the castle.
Caesar flew into the clouds and hid himself.
They were prepared to be exposed. If Stannis had not woken up suddenly, Cole would have flown away on a dragon.
There must be many people who saw his traces, but who knows whether a legendary creature like a dragon is true or false?
Just like some people saw mermaids, some people said they saw sea dragons.
Caesar hovered in the air, and only flew to the sea after he was sure that Cole was not in danger.
There are far fewer traces of humans on the sea than on land, and he found an uninhabited island as a shelter.
In addition to foraging, Caesar spent most of his time sleeping.
Of course, Cole would sometimes urge him to exercise.
Caesar's mind is like a newborn baby, ignorant and curious about everything.
Sometimes he would be playful, but fortunately, he had Cole's supervision.
A dragon and a person are connected in spirit, and they prosper together and suffer together.
It will take some time to raise dragons. Although Caesar has already begun to have fighting power, it is still far from the conqueror's three dragons.
Caesar is his last and most important trump card. He does not have three dragons like Aegon and Dragon Queen.
