#89 - News from the North
Chapter 89: News from the North
“News has arrived from Winterfell. Your eight tribesmen safely crossed the Wall, and Lady Catelyn specifically dispatched a troop of cavalry to protect them as they travel south. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, we should be able to meet them before the end of the month.”
Leaf couldn't help but smile upon hearing this.
Including these eight tribesmen, there are already eleven Singers who have come to the South. Even if the situation in the North deteriorates further, at least the last embers of the tribe can be preserved.
This is already the limit of what can be done.
“This is all thanks to you. If the leaders of mankind had been as broad-minded as you back then, I believe Westeros would be a better place now.” Leaf reminisced about the distant past.
Joffrey smiled but didn't say anything.
If the Children of the Forest's tribes were spread throughout the entire continent, how could humans not see them as the greatest threat? Even the most prestigious leader could only yield to the general trend.
Sansa's voice was always gentle, polite, and sincere. “Miss Leaf, with your wisdom and the protection of the throne, the Children of the Forest will surely flourish as before.”
Leaf rubbed her small hands. “I appreciate your kind words.”
Joffrey added, “The letter from the North also mentioned the movements beyond the Wall. Mance Rayder, calling himself the ‘King-Beyond-the-Wall,’ has gathered tens of thousands of wildlings. To escape the cold and the Others further north, they may attempt to breach the Wall at any time.”
Sansa, Bran, and Arya immediately widened their eyes. They had never heard of such a thing before.
Joffrey wanted everyone present to hear this.
“After much thought, rather than having the men of the North travel all the way south to fight, it would be better to have them go north, reinforce the Wall, and protect the home of mankind.”
“After all, the Others beyond the Wall are the enemy of all life, and we must never let them cross the Wall.”
Leaf couldn't help but worry about her own people. She could imagine the Haunted Forest becoming increasingly dangerous. In a few days, would the magic outside the cave still be able to stop the claws of the Cold Gods?
“Leaf.” Joffrey looked into her large, gold-green eyes. “Your responsibility is great. The Green Seer and dozens of Singers beyond the Wall are our closest and most vulnerable eyes to the wildlings and the Others. How can we contact and protect them well?”
Leaf awaited the answer.
“Leaf, you must become the new Green Seer.”
Leaf's eyes drooped in disappointment; this answer was difficult to achieve.
Green Seers were the wisest elders of the tribe, extremely rare even when the tribe was prosperous, let alone now.
Joffrey wasn't just daydreaming.
With the power of bloodline runes, Joffrey had already integrated the Regression Rune into Leaf's bloodline. Now, her talent in this area was definitely no less than Bran's.
Bran in the original story could succeed, so Leaf shouldn't fail. It was time to give Bloodraven a surprise.
Leaf, however, was unaware of the potential within her.
Joffrey coaxed her, “Think of your people. They are facing the cold and monsters. Without a doubt, they need more help, the help of a Green Seer.”
Green Seer. Leaf thought of the old man on the weirwood throne, and the previous Green Seer of her tribe.
If she had that kind of power, she would definitely be able to help more of her people.
The young king was full of confidence. “Leave everything to me. This time tomorrow, you will become the new Green Seer.”
Leaf could no longer refuse.
… …
Now, a day later, there were many more guests in the godswood.
Qyburn from the research institute and two assistants were carefully inspecting the newly transplanted weirwood tree.
Bran and Arya were quietly staying aside with their direwolves, waiting to welcome the exciting moment soon.
Leaf patiently comforted two tribesmen who had just learned a few words in the human language.
Joffrey was chatting cordially with Duke Eddard.
“Your Majesty, are you really going to transfer all the troops from the North to the Wall?” If Sansa and Bran hadn't strongly vouched for it, Eddard would have thought it was a rumor.
Joffrey chuckled lightly: “That's right.”
Even Eddard's attitude towards sending troops south was so indifferent, let alone the other lords of the North. It’s better to let these people and the Others wear each other down.
“If Lord Eddard is willing, you can return to your homeland and command the legions in the name of Warden of the North, resisting the threat beyond the Wall.”
Duke Tywin had already returned to Lannisport to command the army. Most of the real power in King's Landing was in the hands of the throne and loyal servants, and Eddard's role as a "Lord Regent" maintaining political balance was negligible.
Joffrey was full of sincerity. “Please speak freely.”
Eddard took a deep look at the young king. Who in the Red Keep, which word, was worth believing? Eddard couldn't tell, he could only choose to follow his own honor.
“Your Majesty. House Stark will always be loyal to the Iron Throne. Any position is for serving the country.”
“Lord Eddard has also learned to say nice things.”
Joffrey turned to Sansa beside him.
“Sansa, please think carefully for your father, what is Lord Eddard's true wish. Stay in the Red Keep? Fight Renly? Return to the North?”
Sansa's lips opened and closed, constantly seeking encouragement from her fiancé's eyes, “...Perhaps, does Father miss Winterfell more?”
Joffrey looked at Duke Eddard and saw his unwavering gaze, like solid ice. “It seems that this is the correct answer. Lord Eddard, do you agree?”
Eddard's emotions were calm. He directly handed over the hand-shaped badge symbolizing the position of Prime Minister, “I am willing to guard the North for Your Majesty.”
Joffrey took the badge and sighed a long sigh, “The Night's Watch, the wildlings, and the Children of the Forest have all discovered the Others. There is no need to doubt any longer, they have awakened, and they will soon turn their eyes to the South!”
“Winter is coming.”
Eddard nodded solemnly.
Joffrey pointed to the south, “This war in the South is just a small episode. The gods have already given their will. The real disaster for mankind is in the North, beyond the Wall. Your responsibility is great.”
The gods. Eddard lowered his eyes slightly.
He was not fanatical about so-called divine grace. Apart from a few forces of flame and healing, most divine graces looked more like shackles than gifts.
Immediately afterwards, the familiar hand-shaped badge reappeared in front of him, and Eddard couldn't help but look at the king's face.
The young king showed a gentle smile, “My Prime Minister. Father ran such a long way to send this to your hands, how can I take it back?”
“I hope this badge can help with the important mission you shoulder.”
The badge in his palm was heavy and hard, and Eddard couldn't help but feel confused. Could it really be because the North was in crisis that he was sent back? Is there no other reason?
Joffrey knew a little about Eddard's thoughts.
This man from the North stubbornly sticks to his rules and has no good feelings for the politicians in the South, which probably includes himself, this impulsive and willful king.
While the relationship between the two sides is still above freezing point, it is better to send this proud direwolf back to the North.
Qyburn quietly leaned over.
“Your Majesty, the weirwood tree is in good condition, we can begin.”
Joffrey took the wooden bowl from Qyburn's hand.
He was very curious.
Why can weirwood trees thousands of miles apart become the eyes of the Green Seer? Are there secrets of the Old Gods hidden inside?
