Game of Thrones: I Created the Magic Web
#58 - It's all the crow's fault.
The charcoal in the stove seemed to burn with unusual quietness.
This was the Duke's chamber in Winterfell's main castle, secluded and warm, with only Catelyn, Robb, Rodrik, and Joffrey present.
Catelyn sat alone by the bed, gazing in astonishment at the three tiny sprites.
Robb murmured, "Children of the Forest."
Joffrey began the conversation, "Robb, since you know about the Children of the Forest, you must also know about skinchangers and greenseers, right?"
Catelyn looked at her son.
Robb nodded, "Maester Luwin told us about them. They can control beasts and even know everything, supposedly."
Could these things truly be real?
Joffrey sighed, "Maester Luwin was a respectable scholar. I only discovered beyond the Wall that he died to save Bran!"
Catelyn couldn't bear to hear this and immediately panicked, "Bran is so young, who would want to harm him?"
"Greenseers!" Joffrey said with utmost sincerity, "Perhaps Madam doesn't know, but Bran possesses the talent of a greenseer, which is why he was targeted by the greenseer 'Bloodraven' hiding beyond the Wall."
Catelyn finally heard a familiar name, "Lord Bloodraven? Brynden Rivers!?!"
"That's right, the Bloodraven sorcerer exiled to the Wall."
"He later became a greenseer of the Children of the Forest, but he still couldn't transcend the lifespan of a mortal. Therefore,"
Joffrey paused, observing the changes in the three's expressions.
"He set his sights on Bran's body, often infiltrating his dreams to devour his soul. Maester Luwin was killed because he discovered the clues."
Words are not as good as evidence.
"These Children of the Forest were chased all the way by Bloodraven's wildlings and skinchangers because they glimpsed Bloodraven's true face, and we rescued them later."
Leaf bowed, "Indeed, Your Excellencies."
Talking little sprites that one could reach out and touch! Even the knowledgeable Ser Rodrik couldn't help but waver, let alone Catelyn, a mother, and young Robb?
Joffrey continued, "Bloodraven was harming Bran the night Maester Luwin was murdered. I helped him repel Bloodraven in a dream. Bran knows about this."
Bran was the best evidence.
Catelyn couldn't believe it, "What do you mean defeated Bloodraven in a dream!?!"
Joffrey clasped his hands together, "The gods protect me, I was granted extraordinary power, saved Bran, and was guided to the Wall to discover the boundless darkness lurking there."
He opened his palms, pulling out a string of scorching, paper-thin, smooth fire between them.
The light and heat were so real, so docile, that it was impossible to have any doubts.
This was definitely not a trick!
"But that's not the point." Joffrey swallowed the flame into his mouth, and Catelyn and the others' eyes fixed on his face.
"Lady Catelyn, Robb, please remain calm next."
The atmosphere grew even more tense.
Joffrey stared at the two without moving until Catelyn and Robb nodded solemnly before speaking again.
"The Children of the Forest know Bloodraven's conspiracy. That guy is still obsessed with the Targaryens, especially hating Father and Duke Eddard. He's about to make a move, and everyone in the southward convoy may be killed!"
Most of the Stark family was there.
Catelyn stood up with a whoosh, "No~", a violent dizziness struck, and she collapsed weakly on her son.
Robb also looked panicked, "Father and the others are in danger?!"
The loyal Ser Rodrik was even more excited, his white beard trembling, "If it's true, I must immediately go and protect Lord Eddard!"
Joffrey nodded solemnly, "Bloodraven is too mysterious and powerful. I came here precisely to seek Winterfell's aid, otherwise, why would I stay for even a moment?"
"After all, Bloodraven can launch an attack at any time, time is more precious than gold."
"I can only stay here for one night."
He urged urgently, "I guarantee with the honor of Joffrey Baratheon that these are all facts. Please make a decision as soon as possible, it will be too late if you delay any longer!"
Catelyn clutched Robb's arm tightly, as if begging her son to make a decision.
At this moment, she had completely become a fragile mother worried about the safety of her husband and children, rather than some noble duchess. She also forgot that her Robb was not yet fifteen years old.
Robb bit his lip unconsciously, turning his gaze to his sworn brother, Jon Snow.
Feeling Robb's urgent fear and trust in himself, Jon instantly recalled the more than ten years of Winterfell life from childhood to adulthood.
A serious father, a good brother Robb, mischievous younger sisters and brothers, one or two family members who didn't like him, the cruel Theon, and the special treatment around him.
From the perspective of a bastard, Jon was doing well.
Jon never coveted Winterfell; he just wanted to be an honorable man when he grew up, get along well with his brothers, and make his father proud of him.
He thought the Night's Watch was the guardian of the Seven Kingdoms, a symbol of glory. But Winterfell never told him the truth.
The Night's Watch was such a sight?
Uncle naturally knew, and Father must have known too. No wonder Lady Catelyn never had any objections.
Even so, am I betraying now?
His Highness's persuasion at that time seemed to still echo in his ears:
"This is the will of the gods, I cannot refuse, nor can you. Lord Eddard and everyone will not be hurt. Is the guilt of one or two well-intentioned lies not worth the lives of millions? Think for yourself what the correct answer is."
Jon also remembered the scene of hundreds of wildlings and beasts being wiped out in the blink of an eye. How many times could Winterfell withstand that?
The scene of first meeting the king appeared before his eyes. The wine-loving, lustful fat man and the heroic young crown prince were so different, as if they had nothing to do with each other.
Countless thoughts flashed through his mind like streamers, but all this only took a moment.
Jon said, "Bloodraven is dangerous and cunning, and even more Children of the Forest and wildlings are controlled by him. He can also use beasts to launch surprise attacks from thousands of miles away. I'm afraid Father and the others will be difficult to defend against."
Jon looked directly into Robb's eyes.
"Even the death of Duke Stannis is related to him. King's Landing has his helpers, so it's not safe there either."
Jon hugged Robb tightly.
"Robb," may the gods forgive me, "Father needs more strength. I beg you in the name of a brother, act immediately."
Robb stiffened for a few breaths, only his eyes were still struggling, then he hugged his good brother's back heavily.
The dust settled.
Joffrey handed a note to Lady Catelyn, "I have already prepared the letter. Please have someone release the raven immediately to explain the danger to Lord Eddard and the others."
Catelyn took the note blankly, "The convoy is moving, how can the raven fly over?"
Faced with his distraught mother, Robb could only helplessly remind, "The King is in the Riverlands, send the message to Riverrun, and Grandfather will handle it."
"That's right." Catelyn finally woke up.
"I have to tell Father and Edmure, I have to tell them, Father must have a way!"
Catelyn rushed outside, only remembering that she had been rude when she opened the door, so she hurriedly said goodbye to Joffrey and the others, and then went straight to the rookery.
Robb apologized to the Crown Prince, then gritted his teeth and made a decision.
"Please forgive me, Your Highness. Father ordered me to stay in Winterfell, so it's really difficult for me to leave. Let Theon take a hundred elite soldiers with you south."
Robb looked at the experienced old master-at-arms.
Ser Rodrik Cassel only said, "Please allow me to come along."
