#55 - He saw
Chapter 55 He Saw It
He saw a White Walker.
He fled south directly from the Haunted Forest but was caught in the New Gift.
Damn it, only one step away from the North!
He wasn't executed on the spot. His former brothers said they would use his head to remind everyone: deserters will not have a good end.
He lived a few more days because of this, but he also endured such a long time in torment and fear.
Gods, is waiting for death so painful?
Sometimes he thought it would be better to die in the New Gift, or even die gloriously in the Haunted Forest, but sometimes he suddenly felt hope, thinking that something would stop his death.
And now, the Black Castle is close at hand.
It's time.
He was dragged off his horse, and one end of the hemp rope binding his hands was held by a brother, while a strong hand behind him clamped him and kept him moving forward.
He stopped struggling and instead stared blankly at everything around him.
The towers and stone walls were gray and black. No Night's Watchman would say they were beautiful, but now he felt that this was the best castle in the world.
The ice and snow were piercingly cold, and the campfire was so weak that it could be extinguished at any time. Almost every year, brothers had their fingers, toes, and ears frozen off, but now he was willing to live here for a thousand or ten thousand years.
More and more brothers came out of the houses. No one spent any effort to talk to him, only indifferent, mocking, vicious, and excited eyes and expressions.
But he really wanted to have a chance to have a meal with these brothers again and get through another cold night.
He also wanted to go to Mole's Town one more time, even if it was just once. This time, he would definitely plant the seed in the deepest place, regardless of whether she would raise it.
Thump ~
Two right hands suddenly pressed him down, his knees hurt so much, and the snow was so cold.
But he didn't care about any of this anymore. This at least proved that he was still alive, that he could still feel pain, feel temperature, and feel the warmth of the palm on his shoulder.
"Simon,"
He saw the Lord Commander's lips opening and closing, "The gods have given you this right. Say a last word, quietly meet your judgment, and go to see the gods like a good man."
His eyes turned to "Longclaw" in the Lord Commander's hand, a Valyrian steel sword, which must be very sharp for beheading.
An unspeakable force made him struggle again, "Lord Commander, I saw a White Walker! The Others are real, not a story, they are real, not a story."
He wanted to stand up, but the two hands on his shoulders pressed him down hard.
"Lord, I was just too scared, give me another chance, I am willing to go beyond the Wall again! I can find the Others for the Night's Watch!"
The Night's Watchmen watching the execution looked at each other.
This wasn't the first time a deserter had said this this year, and patrol teams had been wiped out more than once. Wildlings don't have this ability.
Could it be that something strange really happened?
The Lord Commander's gray-white beard trembled, "Have you finished your last words?"
He instantly lost all strength.
The two right hands immediately pressed him onto the thick tree stump next to him. A large area of dark red blood occupied his vision, and the smell of dirt and blood filled his nose.
"By the King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Ruler of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm, of House Baratheon…"
He finally recalled the appearance of his hometown.
The golden wheat danced like waves, the rich floral fragrance that could not be avoided, the father who would pat his head at every turn, the mother who would make sweet snacks had a warm and soft embrace, and the girl whose eyes could speak.
"…Jeo, I hereby sentence you to death."
The long sword was raised high, cutting through the air so that he could hear a subtle sound.
He closed his eyes.
The sound of horses' hooves gradually became louder, as if it was in front. Am I already dead?
He opened his eyes and tried to stretch his neck forward to look.
Black clothes, gray clothes, red and gold clothes, he saw a small chestnut-colored fairy.
"A Child of the Forest."
He heard the Lord Commander murmur.
He rekindled his hope, "It's true! What I said is true! This is a Child of the Forest, the Others are beyond the Wall…"
Clang ~
He saw his neck spurting blood. The Lord Commander said, "Perhaps, but you shouldn't have fled the Wall."
His head rolled a few times, and in the moment before falling into eternal darkness, his eyes reflected the bare ankles of the Child of the Forest.
"Lord Commander, we're back."
Benjen glanced at the headless corpse, his voice hoarse, "Only us."
Jeor Mormont shifted his gaze from Leaf, "What happened? Let's go, we'll talk in the hall."
Joffrey led Leaf over.
"The secret passage is real. Who knew there were so many Wildlings outside hunting down these poor little things? The Wildlings certainly weren't willing to let us go, and the result, Lord Commander, you saw it."
Joffrey gave Benjen a look, and Benjen remained silent.
"I see." The Lord Commander sighed, "Now there will be large sections of the Wall unguarded again."
"Your Highness, please emphasize to the court that Mance Rayder, who calls himself the 'King-Beyond-the-Wall,' is recruiting a Wildling army. Now it seems that the Others are probably not just rumors."
Joffrey said solemnly, "Of course. I will fully support it. The Night's Watch will receive at least five hundred reinforcements within half a year."
"Thank you for your Highness's understanding."
The Lord Commander looked at Leaf again, "This one, is a Child of the Forest?"
Leaf bowed, "Lord Commander, I can speak your language. You can call me Leaf."
Boom ~
The Night's Watchmen watching couldn't help but exclaim, as if they had seen an animal learn to speak.
Although all stories depict the Children of the Forest as powerful and wise beings, who would regard them as equal beings when they suddenly see their so different appearance?
The Lord Commander quickly signaled everyone to disperse and led the Crown Prince and others away.
The Night's Watchmen reluctantly watched the Child of the Forest enter the room, and the solid wooden door closed heavily.
After a moment of silence, they completely exploded, jumping, shouting, and hugging each other, venting the wild excitement in their hearts, as if they had just won an epic victory.
Being able to see the Children of the Forest, who only exist in stories, with their own eyes, is worth it in this life!
…
"Your Highness, what are your plans next?"
Lord Commander Jeor brought a cup of hot mead with honey to the Crown Prince, his tone seeming to carry a hint of anticipation.
Joffrey said with a smile, "Life at the Wall is unforgettable, but unfortunately, my father has already traveled half the journey. I promised to catch up with the caravan before King's Landing, so I have to set off as soon as possible."
The basilisk lizard hasn't found an opportunity. He has to see the King off in the Riverlands further south, and before that, he must rush to a place within two days' journey to prepare to clean up the situation.
"I'll leave early tomorrow morning."
The Lord Commander's expression softened a little, "I wish Your Highness a smooth journey."
Joffrey raised his glass, "Thank you for your kind words."
And the Red Keep, it's time.
Urging the Mirror Rune, Hannah, far away in the Red Keep, was still within his perception. He saw her sitting in front of the mirror.
He sent Hannah the final signal:
Action in seven days.
